Overview
VesselView Race Edition is a comprehensive vessel information center. VesselView Race
Edition displays vital information for up to three engines at one time and link gauge support
for a fourth engine. It continuously monitors and reports basic operating data, as well as
detailed information such as sea water temperature and depth, trim status, vessel speed
and steering angle, and the status of fuel, oil, water, and waste tanks.
VesselView Race Edition can be fully integrated with a vessels global positioning system
(GPS) or other NMEA‑compatible device to provide navigation, speed, and
fuel‑to‑destination information.

to the VesselView unit are turned to the "OFF" position. When any engine key switch is
turned to the "RUN" position again, VesselView quickly displays the last active screen.
To shut down the VesselView unit completely for storage or to save configuration session
changes, press the X button while turning the engine key switches to the "OFF" position.
Do not interrupt power to the unit while it displays the powering off screen. If power is
interrupted while VesselView is shutting down, changes made during that session may be
lost. When any engine key switch is turned to the "RUN" position again, VesselView
displays the last active screen after it completes the boot sequence.
IMPORTANT: If the battery switches are turned off, the VesselView unit will shut down
immediately, while this will not damage the unit, all session configuration changes made
since the last configuration save will be lost.
NOTE: When not in use, cover the VesselView unit with its protective cover to prevent the
screen from becoming damaged.
During the initial startup sequence for VesselView, a setup wizard screen appears,
prompting you to enter the initial setup for the unit. If this happens, follow the procedures in
Section 2 - Setup and Calibration. This setup wizard does not return once completed
unless a factory reset is performed.

Restarting VesselView
At any time you can restart VesselView without the loss of any information or configuration
changes.
To restart VesselView, press and hold the X button and the check button at the same time
until the system restarts. VesselView will display the last active screen after it completes
the boot up cycle.

Cleanliness and Care of Product

Clean the VesselView screen with water and a soft cloth. Do not use detergents. When not
in use, cover the VesselView unit with its protective cover to prevent the screen from
becoming damaged.

VesselView displays fault icons to alert the operator of any faults or warnings with an icon
on the left side of the status bar. A description of the fault or warning will appear over the
other status bar fields. If all systems are operating normally a green icon with the word
"OK" inside will be displayed. For all other faults, there are four icons to warn the operator.
The operator can view the fault in detail by pressing the brightness/alarm button. Refer to
Section 4 - Alarms.

FUEL ALARMS
IMPORTANT: A fuel fault alarm will only occur if all fuel tanks on the vessel, connected to
VesselView, are sending a low fuel condition fault. If only one of many is sending a low fuel
condition fault, the VesselView will not identify the fault. The system looks at all tanks
defined as fuel and adds them all together into a single sum. The alarms are based off of
the sum of all fuel tanks.
Fuel Low Level Icon—This icon will appear when the "FUEL LOW LEVEL" percentage of
remaining fuel is reached. By default, VesselView has the low level percentage set to 25%.
This percentage can be modified in the "WARNINGS" screen. Menu path: "Main" >
"Settings" > "Warnings". Refer to Section 4 - Warnings.
Fuel Critical Level Icon—This icon will appear when the "FUEL CRIT LEVEL" percentage
of remaining fuel is reached. By default, VesselView has the critical level percentage set
to 10%. This percentage can be modified in the "WARNINGS" screen. Menu path: "Main"
> "Settings" > "Warnings". Refer to Section 4 - Warnings.
In conjunction with the fault icon and message appearing in the status bar, two other means
of warning the operator are built into VesselView; a warning horn and warnings pop‑up
window. Both of these can be turned on or off but the status bar icon and warning message
will always appear.
• The audible warning is set within the "WARNINGS" screen. Menu path: "Main" >
"Settings" > "Warnings". Refer to Section 4 - Warnings.
• The warning pop‑up window is set within the "PREFERENCES" screen. Menu path:
"Main" > "Settings" > "Preferences". Refer to Section 4 - Preferences.

Section 1 - Getting Started

Saving Settings
VesselView operates in sessions. Configuration changes can be made to a session but
when the VesselView unit is shutdown before saving it will lose those changes and go back
to its default settings (or last saved configuration settings). When changes are made to any
of the VesselView settings, whether for calibrating settings or for customization, those
changes need to be saved.
IMPORTANT: If the battery switches are turned off, the VesselView unit will shut down. All
session configuration changes made since the last configuration save will be lost.
When changing data in the fields of a screen, the screen may state to press the check
button to save the changes but in essence you are only saving those changes to the current
session. After a change is made to any VesselView screen press the check button to save
the changes made to the session or X button to cancel any changes.
Upon completing any change/customization to VesselView a blue pop‑up message will
appear as a reminder to save your settings (to save the session). To save time, it is
recommended that all session changes be saved before holding X button while keying ALL
engines off.

32769

IMPORTANT: Pressing the X button while turning the engine key switch "OFF" will save
the current session configuration settings and shut down VesselView.
When the engine key switches are turned back to the "RUN" position, VesselView will
perform a complete reboot that typically takes a few minutes. Due to the length of time to
reboot, it is advantageous to make all necessary configuration changes in a single session
and then save all changes at one time.
There are two methods to save configuration changes made in a session:
• Complete the setup wizard and press the check button. VesselView will save the
changes made in the setup wizard session, shutdown, and reboot.
• When changes have been made to VesselView, outside of the setup wizard, perform
the following procedure.
a. While pressing the X button, turn the engine key switch to the "OFF" position. Be
sure to turn all engine key switches to their "OFF" position if multiple engines exist.
IMPORTANT: If any engine key switch is turned off after you have let go of the X button,
that particular engines session changes will be lost.
b. When any key switch is turned back to the "RUN" position, VesselView displays
the last active screen after it completes the boot up cycle. Though the data is
saved, only data for the engines that have their key switches turned to the "RUN"
position will be displayed.

Setup Wizard Overview

Turning the key switch to the "RUN" position activates all VesselView units connected to
the system. Complete the initial setup process using the setup wizard when starting up any
VesselView unit for the first time, or after selecting "RESET SETTINGS" on the "FACTORY
RESET" screen. Menu path: "Main" > "Calibrate" > "Factory Reset". This process calibrates
each VesselView to the vessel's engine, sensor, and instrument configuration. The setup
wizard procedures include:
• Import configuration—This is used when a good configuration has been stored onto a
USB memory stick.
• Engine setup—This is used to define the size, type, and quantity of engines installed
on the vessel
• Display setup—This is used to define the screen configuration for your engines.
• Device setup—This is used to differentiate each VesselView Race Edition unit when
multiple VesselView's are installed on the vessel.
• Tank setup and calibration—This is used to define the tanks purpose, size, and location
on the vessel. Tanks will need to be calibrated so that the data displayed in VesselView
is accurate.
• Tab setup and calibration—This is used to define the number of tabs installed on the
vessel and their electrical connection. Tabs will need to be calibrated so that the data
displayed in VesselView is accurate.
NOTE: Trim is not part of the setup wizard but requires setup and calibration. Refer to
Section 4 - Trim Calibration.
Repeat the setup wizard for each VesselView unit installed on the vessel. It is
recommended that the configuration setup and calibration settings be saved onto a USB
memory stick and imported onto other VesselView units rather than having to repeat the
setup procedure.
IMPORTANT: When VesselView Race Edition is first configured (during the setup wizard)
the system will automatically detect sensors that are present and ignores sensor inputs
that have no sensors attached. If a sensor is removed from the system after initial
configuration, VesselView will start to show faults for the removed sensor. To stop the fault
message perform the "Reset Sensor Detection" procedure. Refer to Section 4 - Factory
Reset. VesselView will rescan for sensors, and because the removed sensor no longer
exists, the fault message will go away.

Setup Wizard
The VesselView Race Edition setup wizard guides you through the first steps of configuring
VesselView. The setup wizard begins when the VesselView unit is turned on for the first
time or when a factory reset is performed. There are five areas that the setup wizard assists
in configuring; the engine, the display, the device, the tanks, and the tabs. The VesselView
setup wizard starts with the option to import a saved configuration from a USB memory
stick.
NOTE: A VesselView configuration needs to be previously exported (saved) to a USB
memory stick in order to perform the import function. Refer to Section 4 - Save
Configuration.
To skip the "IMPORT CONFIG" option, press the right arrow on the arrow trackpad. This
will continue the setup wizard and open the "ENGINE SETUP" screen (continue to the
Engine Setup procedure in the setup wizard).

Section 2 - Initial Setup and Calibration

1. Turn all engine key switches to their "RUN" position. The first screen is the
"WELCOME" screen.
IMPORTANT: DO NOT rush VesselView by pressing buttons while the system is booting
up and acquiring vessel and engine data. When VesselView is initially started or after a
factory reset, the system will take a few seconds to complete its boot‑up process and
acquisition of the vessel and engine data. If you do not see the "IMPORT CONFIG" screen
as your next (second) screen, press the left arrow on the arrow trackpad until it appears.

32248

2. Press the right arrow on the arrow trackpad to continue to "IMPORT CONFIG".
Import Configuration (optional)
The import configuration option is used to import configuration settings that were saved to
a USB memory stick.
IMPORTANT: The VesselView unit will recognize USB memory sticks of version 1.1 or a
USB memory stick of version 2.0 that is stated to be backwards compatible to version 1.1.
The VesselView unit will not recognize memory sticks that are only version 2.0 compatible.
IMPORTANT: Configuration settings saved to a USB memory stick are compiled into one
data file. Only one file can exist in the root of the USB memory stick. VesselView will not
recognize multiple import files.
1. The "IMPORT CONFIG" screen instructs you to insert a USB memory stick and wait
for instructions.

IMPORTANT: If you attempt to load a configuration setting that was not saved to the USB
memory stick, the import of the data file will not be successful; a yellow pop‑up message
will appear stating "IMPORT UNSUCCESSFUL". If you can recall the configuration setting
that was not saved, select "SKIP" for that particular configuration setting. That particular
configuration setting will need to be setup and calibrated accordingly. Refer to Section 4 ‑
Calibrate.
To avoid this error, it is practical to save all configuration settings to the USB memory stick
(leave all fields read "EXPORT"). This will resolve any doubt, when loading ("IMPORT")
configuration settings.

wish to display on VesselView.
7. Confirm your selections by pressing the check button.
8. Press the right arrow on the arrow trackpad to continue to the "DISPLAY SETUP"
screen.
NOTE: VesselView displays data from one engine by default.
NOTE: Although you may select up to four engines, VesselView only displays data for a
maximum of two diesel engines or three gasoline engines. Choosing four engines enables
you to add two more tanks; and to view the total fuel flow, fuel range, and drive link gauges
for all engines. All other data is displayed for the maximum number of engines allowed. It
is recommended that a second VesselView unit be used in a quad engine configuration.
Display Setup
The "DISPLAY SETUP" screen enables you to choose where the data for each engine is
displayed on VesselView. Typically, the engines are displayed left to right in the same order
as their physical locations port to starboard. Some helm configurations may require
different display settings. If you choose to display only one engine in a multi‑engine
application, VesselView displays aggregate data such as total fuel flow and range for all
engines, but displays engine specific data for only the engine selected for that display.
IMPORTANT: Do not choose the same screen location for more than one engine.
1. If the screen locations are correct, proceed to step 6; otherwise, press the check button
to access the "RIGHT SIDE" field.
NOTE: The "DISPLAY SETUP" screen shown is for dual engines. Triple and quad
applications will show three fields. The third field will be listed as "CENTER" location. Single
engine applications will have one field.

NOTE: Use "HELM ID 1" for single helm vessels. If a vessel has multiple VesselView units
installed on different helms (up to four maximum) the "HELM ID" needs to represent the
helm where each VesselView is installed (lowest to highest helm is recommended).
4. Press the left or right arrow on the arrow trackpad to choose either helm 1, helm 2,
helm3, or helm 4.
5. Confirm your selections by pressing the check button.
6. Press the right arrow on the arrow trackpad to continue to the "TANK SETUP" screen.

NOTE: Tank locations have now been confirmed.

14. Now begins the calibration process for each tank. Press the down or up arrow on the
arrow trackpad to highlight the tank to be calibrated and press the check button.
NOTE: As you progress through the listed tanks in the table the tank successfully calibrated
will change to blue text.
15. There are three tank calibration methods.
• Choose "DEFAULT" (go to step a) for uniformly shaped tanks where each quarter
of the tank holds a quarter of its total capacity. The default method will place values
of 0%, 25%, 50%, 75%, and 100% into the same calibration used by the
"MANUAL" method thus overwriting any manually entered data.
• Choose "MANUAL" (go to step b) to fine tune the tank calibrations when you have
a known amount in the tank. This is the most commonly used option because you
can enter the calibrations at any time and see how they affect the calculated fuel
remaining. The calibration does not need to begin at any set level, and where
duplicate tanks in the vessel exist, the calibration settings can be easily copied
from one tank to the other and then even slightly adjusted up or down over the
course of a few tanks of fuel.

90-8M8022154 APRIL 2008 Page 27

Section 2 - Initial Setup and Calibration

• Choose "FILL TANK" (go to step c) for irregularly shaped tanks. The "FILL TANK"
method must be initiated with an empty tank and filled in intervals. As you step
through the "FILL TANK" procedure the current sender value is placed into the
"MANUAL" calibration at the appropriate level indicated by the graphic on the
screen. These values can be verified, and readjusted if necessary, by using the
"MANUAL" method to adjust the calibration generated during the "FILL TANK"
procedure.

32829

a. "DEFAULT" Method—Use the default method primarily for those tanks containing
oil, water, or waste. These types of tanks are commonly uniform in shape. The
manual method can be used to adjust the calibration accordingly.

v. Repeat steps iii and iv for each tank.

vi. Once all tanks have been calibrated (identified as blue text), end the calibration
process by selecting the X button.
NOTE: Upon completing any change/customization to VesselView a blue pop‑up message
will appear as a reminder to save your session. Refer to Section 1 - Saving Settings. To
save time, it is recommended that all session changes be saved before holding X button
while keying ALL engines off.
vii.If you are done calibrating the tanks, press the right arrow on the arrow
trackpad to continue to the "TAB SETUP" screen.
b. "MANUAL" Method—The level sensor in the tank changes resistance values as
the float rises and falls with the volume level in the tank. A normal level sensor
would have a resistance reading between 33–240 Ohms. A resistance value of
approximately 33 Ohms represents a full tank. A resistance value of approximately
240 Ohms represents an empty tank. VesselView allows for sender calibration to
correct for sensors that are slightly outside this range. The senders used in
irregularly shaped tanks need to be calibrated to the tank as substance is added
in the "FILL TANK" method, however, if it was calibrated using the "FILL TANK"
method when the vessel was on the trailer or when the vessel was rocking in the
water, the tank level will be different than when the vessel is resting in calm water
so the calibration needs to be refined. Changing the actual % value calibrates the
tank level indicator to the tank level sensor. To compensate for known errors in
the tank indicating system, select the quantity (0%, 25%, 50%, 100%) and adjust
the actual % value to match the current actual % for a known number of calculated
gallons. For example, if the calculated gallons equals 60 and that truly represents
50% of the tank size in gallons (120 gallon tank), the tank level sensor might show
70% or any other number other than 50% current actual. Select the 50% actual
field and press the left or right arrow on the arrow trackpad until the actual reads
the same as current actual, now the tank level indicator will indicate 50% when
the calculated gallons equals 60 gallons.
NOTE: To assist in manually calibrating the tanks, reference tables have been provided in
Section 8 - Calibration Logs.

32805

IMPORTANT: It is not necessary to perform the procedure using quarters of a tank,

although this will establish a more accurate tank calibration. It is most important that, at
minimum, empty (0%) and full (100%) are calibrated. VesselView will calculate the quarter
percentages using the empty and full data.
v. Begin filling the tank in 25% intervals.
vi. Press the down or up arrow on the arrow trackpad and highlight the interval

save time, it is recommended that all session changes be saved before holding X button
while keying ALL engines off.
xii.If you are done calibrating the tanks, press the right arrow on the arrow
trackpad to continue to the "TAB SETUP" screen.
c. FILL TANK Method—The fill tank method requires that you fill tank in intervals
until full. This method is used primarily for irregularly shaped tanks. This method
is very similar to the "MANUAL" method in that you will need to begin with an empty
tank and fill the tank in quarter percent intervals. The "FILL TANK" method takes
you through the process step‑by‑step. It is important that you do follow the set
screens and not jump from empty (0%) to full (100%).
IMPORTANT: Follow the procedure; do not jump from empty (0%) to the full (100%) screen.
Not following the procedure will cause inaccuracy in your calibration.

Tab Setup and Calibration
For vessels equipped with a tab or tabs, VesselView will need to be calibrated to the tab
sensor.
VesselView does not display the tab chart for power packages without tabs. Refer to
Section 4 - Trim/Tab Pop-Up (Settings).
The tab position sensor changes voltage (current actual %) as the tab is raised or lowered.
Changing the actual % value calibrates the tab level indicator to the tab position sensor.
To compensate for sensitivity of the tab position sensor, select the positions (100 = Down,
50 = Level, and 0 = Up) and adjust the actual % value to match the current actual % for
that known tab position.
NOTE: The "TABS" screen shows up to two tabs for a starboard and port setup or just a
center tab for a single tab setup. The "TABS" screen shown is for a two tab configuration.

TANK CALIBRATION THEORY

There are three tank calibration methods. Choose "DEFAULT" for uniformly shaped tanks
where each quarter of the tank holds a quarter of its total capacity. Choose "MANUAL" or
"FILL TANK" for irregularly shaped tanks. The "MANUAL" method is used to fine tune the
tank calibrations when you have a known amount in the tank. The "FILL TANK" method
must be initiated with an empty tank and filled in intervals.

32829

TANK CALIBRATION USING DEFAULT METHOD

Use the default method primarily for those tanks containing oil, water, or waste. These
types of tanks are commonly uniform in shape. The manual method can be used to adjust
the calibration accordingly.
DEFAULT METHOD PROCEDURE
1. Press the check button to select the tank to be calibrated.

32784

5. Repeat steps iii and iv for each tank.

6. Once all tanks have been calibrated (identified as blue text), end the calibration process
by selecting the X button.
NOTE: Upon completing any change/customization to VesselView a blue pop‑up message
will appear as a reminder to save your session. Refer to Section 1 - Saving Settings. To
save time, it is recommended that all session changes be saved before holding X button
while keying ALL engines off.
TANK CALIBRATION USING MANUAL METHOD
The level sensor in the tank changes resistance values as the float rises and falls with the
volume level in the tank. A normal level sensor would have a resistance reading between
33–240 Ohms. A resistance value of approximately 33 Ohms represents a full tank. A
resistance value of approximately 240 Ohms represents an empty tank. VesselView allows
for sender calibration to correct for sensors that are slightly outside this range.
The senders used in irregularly shaped tanks need to be calibrated to the tank as substance
is added in the "FILL TANK" method, however, if it was calibrated using the "FILL TANK"
method when the vessel was on the trailer or when the vessel was rocking in the water,
the tank level will be different than when the vessel is resting in calm water so the calibration
needs to be refined.
Changing the actual % value calibrates the tank level indicator to the tank level sensor. To
compensate for known errors in the tank indicating system, select the quantity (0%, 25%,
50%, 100%) and adjust the actual % value to match the current actual % for a known
number of calculated gallons. For example, if the calculated gallons equals 60 and that
truly represents 50% of the tank size in gallons (120 gallon tank), the tank level sensor
might show 70% or any other number other than 50% current actual. Select the 50% actual
field and press the left or right arrow on the arrow trackpad until the actual reads the same
as current actual, now the tank level indicator will indicate 50% when the calculated gallons
equals 60 gallons.
NOTE: To assist in manually calibrating the tanks, reference tables have been provided in
Section 8 - Calibration Logs.

TANK CALIBRATION USING FILL TANK METHOD
The fill tank method requires that you fill tank in intervals until full. This method is used
primarily for irregularly shaped tanks. This method is very similar to the "MANUAL" method
in that you will need to begin with an empty tank and fill the tank in quarter percent intervals.
The "FILL TANK" method takes you through the process step‑by‑step. It is important that
you do follow the set screens and not jump from empty (0%) to full (100%).
IMPORTANT: Follow the procedure; do not jump from empty (0%) to the full (100%) screen.
Not following the procedure will cause inaccuracy in your calibration.

Tab Calibration
THEORY
To access the "TAB CALIBRATION" screen, press "Main" > "Calibrate" > "Tabs". Press
the check button to open the calibration screen. This tab calibration procedure utilizes the
same tab calibration screens used in the setup wizard.
NOTE: Tab calibration does not need to be performed if VesselView was configured using
the setup wizard. The "Tabs" menu option located in the "Settings 2" menu enables
adjustment to the existing configuration and offers a quick review of the current settings.
The screens shown in the procedure are for a two tab
configuration.

VesselView Warning Horn Strategy
VesselView is equipped with a warning horn on its harness. This horn will sound alarms
for critical tank level and low water depth. The engine fault warnings will be visible on the
VesselView screens but the horns will be generated at the engine key switch harness. If
you prefer to have warning horns from both sources, go to the "WARNINGS" screen of the
"Settings" menu and turn the horn "ON". The horn is off by default. Refer to Section 4 -
Warnings.
All engine alarms will be heard through the engine key switch harness horn regardless of
the VesselView warning horn setting. From the factory, the VesselView horn is turned off.
If the horn is turned on in the "WARNINGS" screen, the engine alarms will also be heard
through the VesselView horn. The VesselView horn will sound a solid tone for all faults and
the engine warning horn will sound its specific warning tone. Check the engine owners
manual for possible warning horns for your engine.
NOTE: The warning horn strategy of the VesselView may not be the same horn strategy
as the engine.
If the warning horn is turned on in the "Settings" menu and you are experiencing a
VesselView alarm, press the X button or check button to acknowledge the fault and turn
off the audible alarm.
The low water depth alarm is set in the "DEPTH" screen of the "Environment and
Navigation" menu. This menu enables you to turn the horn on or off. Low water depth
alarms sound audibly even if the warning horn is turned off in the "WARNINGS" screen.
The low tank level alarm is not able to be turned off. The tank level at which the alarm will
sound can be adjusted down to 10% in the "WARNINGS" screen. Refer to Section 4 -
Warnings.

DTS Wiring Guidelines

! WARNING
Splicing or probing will damage the wire insulation allowing water to enter the wiring.
Water intrusion may lead to wiring failure and loss of throttle and shift control. To avoid
the possibility of serious injury or death from loss of boat control, do not splice or probe
into any wire insulation of the DTS system.

• Never attempt to connect, network, tie into, switch, sink source voltage or current from
the DTS wiring harnesses.
• Never attempt to connect any type of communication or navigation equipment into the
DTS wiring harnessing other than at the designated connection point.
• Always install boat accessory equipment using an appropriate power source
connection, such as a fuse panel or junction box.
• Never attempt to tap directly into any of the DTS electrical wiring harnesses for a source
of power.
Wiring Guidelines for Electrical Boat Accessories
! WARNING
Excessive voltage drop may compromise the DTS system, leading to serious injury or
death from loss of throttle and shift control. Do not wire any electrical accessory into the
12‑volt ignition key switch circuits of the DTS system.

IMPORTANT: Do not connect boat accessories to the ignition key switch. Use a separate,
switched 12‑volt source for wiring boat accessories.
IMPORTANT: The DTS system requires a consistent 12‑volt power source. Splicing or
connecting accessories to the 12‑volt or ignition key switch DTS circuits (purple, purple/
white, or red wires) could blow a fuse or overload circuits, causing intermittent or complete
loss of operation.
Harness Installation Guidelines
IMPORTANT: A SystemView harness is NOT compatible with VesselView. VesselView
must only be installed using the harness contained in the VesselView kit.

Page 150 90-8M8022154 APRIL 2008

NOTE: The starboard junction box provides battery voltage and ground circuit to the
VesselView. If the starboard battery (pin A) is unavailable because it has failed or is
switched off, the VesselView will power up using another ignition source (port, starboard
inner, or port inner batteries) but will not save any memory settings when the VesselView
is turned off. The VesselView will not operate if the starboard ground (pin B) is unavailable
at the starboard junction box.

Section 8 - Installation and Wiring

1 - Put the VesselView Race Edition into Manual Tank Calibration mode.
2 - For each point in the table, enter the tank sending unit reading from the
"current actual" value on the display.
3 - If the tank sender does not read on the low or high end, this amount should
not be used in the tank calculations.
4 - After filling the tank, take the measurable amount (between 0% and 100%),
and enter it into VesselView as tank capacity.
5 - Enter the calibration points from the data in the table for each point in the
Manual Tank Calibration screen.
6 - Use alternate positions if you want to adjust for various operating positions
(on the trailer, in the water at rest, on plane etc.).
7 - If the measurable capacity does not start at zero, enter the amount needed
for the sender to start reading in the last unused "Measurable Capacity" field.

IMPORTANT: Measurable capacity starts when the sender reading starts increasing (the
sender reading for an empty tank may be greater than 0%) and stops when the sender
reading stops increasing (this may be less than 100%). Any volume added to the tank
before the sender reading increases or after the sender stops increasing is unmeasured
capacity. It is important, to ensure accuracy, that the unmeasured capacity is subtracted
from the total volume added and that only the measurable volume be entered as the tank
capacity.

In the example shown, the sender reading stayed at 3.0% until 16 gallons were added to
the tank. It also stopped increasing at 93.0% even though there is an additional 26 gallons
added. These 42 gallons, if used in the calculations, would cause significant errors in the
calculated volume remaining. In this example the tank capacity entered into VesselView
should be approximately 158 gallons to ensure the most accurate reading. If you left the
tank capacity at 200 gallons and you properly calibrated full to be 93.0%, when the sender
reading drops from 93.0% to 92.9%, the reading will change from 200.0 gallons to 199.9
gallons when we know that there is really only 173.9 gallons in the tank. For this same
reason, the 16 gallons added before the sender starts to read should not be used. This is
why, in the example, the Measurable Capacity is 158 (200 gallon tank ‑ 26 gallons of top
end unmeasurable capacity = 174 gallons, 174 gallons ‑ 16 gallons of bottom end
unmeasurable capacity = 158 gallons that are measurable).
