Design Exercise

Pre-Design Framework (15% INDIVIDUAL)
Physical + Online Submission on Week 11 (on 28th June 2022, Tuesday)
Introduction

Ideation is often the most exciting stage in a Design-based project, because during Ideation, the aim
is to generate a large quantity of ideas that the team can then filter and cut down into the best, most
practical or most innovative ones in order to inspire new and better design solutions and product.
“Ideation is the mode of the design process in which you concentrate on idea generation. Mentally it
represents a process of ‘going wide’ in terms of concepts and outcomes. Ideation provides both the
fuel and also the source material for building prototypes and getting innovative solutions into the
hands of your users.”

– d.school, An Introduction to Design Thinking PROCESS GUIDE

Objectives of the Assignment

1. To conduct pre-exploration and research on design ideas, and concept to form a

comprehensive understanding and application of the basic design elements and design
principles at an appropriate foundational level towards completing final project

Learning Outcomes of the Assignment

Upon successful completion of this assignment, students will be able to demonstrate the following;
1. Demonstrate understanding of ideas and concepts through experimentation with media and
materials.

1
Tasks - Methodology
Students must attempt all components under final project assessment. Failure to attempt this final project, the
student would be automatically failed and will repeat the module, even though has achieved more than 50% in
the overall assessment.

This "Exercise" is a pre- conceptual framework to further develop your Final Project, Making : Vertical
Sculpture. Before students finalize the conceptual ideas towards the vertical sculpture, students are required
to revisit, extract and summarize designer's work.

On top of that, students will also conduct a research on "what is sculpture" and what makes a great sculpture.
The content shall be illustrated through visual representation such as mind mapping, info-graphic, diagrams,
sketches or etc. Student may also combine mediums such like mood-board with mindmapping for the outcome.

Students will then develop a tactile/texture A3 artwork that would conclude their research.

Fernand Leger Philippe Starck

Kazimer Malevich Le Corbusier
Rene Magritte Zaha Hadid
William Morris Frank Gehry
Olaf Hajek Frank Lloyd Wright
Max Ernst Isamu Nagochi
Paul Klee Iris Van Herpen

Students may choose a designer from the list (can be a continued study from Project 2 or someone new) –
Students may also suggest a designer of their liking (upon tutor’s permission)

PART 1 – SLIDES / CONCEPTUAL RESEARCH

1. Each student will study in depth how their chosen individual work. (method of working) and
demonstrate their understanding.
2. Student to understand what makes a sculptures and techniques of sculpture.
3. Student to explore the possibilities of mediums and materiality in making the A3
tactiled/textured artwork and also Final Project.

PART 2 – A3 TACTILE ARTWORK

1. Using what you have learned so far, students are to develop a tactile/textured artwork of their
choice. Students are expected to be exploratory and experimentative in creating the artwork.
The artwork has to reflect the designers identity and your overall conceptual study.

Assessment Criteria

The assessment criteria for this assignment will be based on:

▪ An in-depth Ideas generation with titles and descriptions using visual representation that reflects the
designers' identities and also demonstrated clear understanding of what is sculpture and how to
construct a great sculpture
▪ Creativity in translating conceptual research to a tactile/textured artwork in which demonstrated
experimentation with media and materials.

Marking Criteria
Marks shall be distributed as follows:
Work will be assessed based on the following assessment criteria:
