Unit Title: Artistic Perception

Name: Andrea Beahn

Content Area: Art

Grade Level: 9-12

CA Content Standard(s)/Common Core Standard(s):

1.0 ARTISTIC PERCEPTION - Processing, Analyzing, and Responding to Sensory Information Through the Language and Skills Unique to the Visual
Arts
Students perceive and respond to works of art, objects in nature, events, and the environment. They also use the vocabulary of the visual arts to
express their observations.
Develop Perceptual Skills and Visual Arts Vocabulary

1.1 Identify and use the principles of design to discuss, analyze, and write about visual aspects in the environment and in works of art,
including their own.
1.2 Describe the principles of design as used in works of art, focusing on dominance and subordination.

Analyze Art Elements and Principles of Design

1.3 Research and analyze the work of an artist and write about the artist's distinctive style and its contribution to the meaning of the work.
1.4 Analyze and describe how the composition of a work of art is affected by the use of a particular principle of design.

Impact of Media Choice

1.5 Analyze the material used by a given artist and describe how its use influences the meaning of the work.
1.6 Compare and contrast similar styles of works of art done in electronic media with those done with materials traditionally used in the visual
arts.

Big Ideas/Unit Goals:

What makes art "good" or "bad"? How can the creative process be broken down into foundational building blocks, like the principles of design? How do things
like style and medium add to the layered pieces of an artworks symbolic meaning? How can an artist use physical materials and physical skills to best
communicate their conceptual ideas?
Overall, the goal is for students to gain skills, knowledge, and experience that will give them more of a sense of control when creating art projects. At the end of
this unit, students will know the basic principles of design. They will also be able to analyze works of art and understand how the artist is using these principles

in their composition. These steps will help students incorporate these design principles into their own artworks. Finally, students will be able to understand
how personal style and choice of material work together with the principles of design.
Unit Summary:
By the end of this unit, students will have an understanding of the definitions of the design principles. They will also have completed several projects that will
give them lots of hands-on experience using them. Finally, they will learn how to emulate and learn from another artists style, and how to thoughtfully choose
materials.
Assessment Plan:
Entry-Level: Discussion- What is Art? What is
good art and what is bad art?

Formative: Online Quiz- Definitions of the

Principles of Design/ Drawing #1- Make a large
drawing that follows these design principles/
Drawing #2- Make a large drawing that breaks or
bends these design principles purposefully/
Painting #1- Study an artist and try out their
personal style

Summative: Painting #2- Buy a thrift store picture

and make it your own/ Project #3- Create an
original work of art using your own style, the
principles of design, and your choice of medium

Lesson 1
Student Learning Objective:
To learn the principles of
design, and incorporate
them into their own work.
Able to create art projects
that demonstrate an
understanding of these
principles.

Acceptable Evidence
(Assessments): Students
should be able to recall and
engage in the classroom
discussions about the
design principles. Should
be able to begin
incorporating them into
their own artworks.

Lesson Activities: The first activity will be a classroom discussion in which students learn about the
design principles and how they help artists to create art. We will also discuss what makes art good or
bad and how the principles play a role in our decision. There will also be an online quiz that will help
them to memorize these new vocabulary words. Drawings #1 and #2 will give them physical practice at
using these new concepts in their work. They will also complete the graphic organizer project which will
further help them to understand the principles of design and how to use them.

Acceptable Evidence:
Students should be able to
analyze another artists
style, and see how they are
using design principles.
They should be able to
learn from different styles
and emulate them. This will
be evident in their projects
as they try to emulate
another artist.

Lesson Activities: For this learning objective, students will complete the Webercise activity titled A
Virtual Trip to the Getty which will help them see the use of design principles in other artists works.
From there, students will move on to studying an artists style and trying it out for themselves. This will
further aid them in seeing how other artists use design principles and how to broaden their own use of
them.

Lesson 2
Student Learning Objective:
The ability to analyze
another artists work, and
how they use design
principles in their personal
style.

Lesson 3
Student Learning Objective:
To analyze how material
plays a role in an artwork,
specifically paying
attention to how electronic
and traditional media differ
when it comes to the
meanings that they add to
their works. The ability to
thoughtfully choose a
medium when creating an
artwork.

Acceptable Evidence:
Students should be able to
show thoughtfulness when
it comes to choosing
materials. This will be
evident in their writing
when they explain why they
chose the mediums they
chose.

Lesson Activities: Finally, students will combine a pre-existing thrift store picture with an original image.
This activity will require a strong understanding of the design principles to complete. It will also
introduce the concept of using alternative materials when creating. There will then be a lecture which
will introduce multiple ideas for different materials that can be used in the final project. The final project
allows students more freedom to choose various materials and subjects.
