B. RECOUNT TEXT

Task 2:
Understand this recount text and its generic structure.
Title My Adventure at Leang-Leang Cave
Orientation On Sunday, my parents, my best friend Novi, and I visited a cave at
Maros called Leang-Leang. It was my first time to visit the cave,
better yet, my best friend came to visit it with me!

2
Event 1 The cave was famous for its primitive cave wall paintings which were
some hand prints and wild boar paintings. The cave and its
surroundings were turned into a national park, so it was taken care
of. My parents took a rest in a small hut for visitors of the park, while
Novi and I adventured around the cave with a guide. We had to
climb some metal stairs to get to the cave, because the cave was
embedded into a small mountain. Next stop was a place where some
seashells littered the ground and some were actually piled into a big
mound! The guide said that these piles of seashells are called
kjokkenmoddinger, or kitchen trash.
Event 2 The humans who lived here ate the shells and dumped the left overs
in their ‘kitchen’. The last place was a small museum where they
have skeletons of the humans who lived in the caves. The skeletons
along with some roughly made jewelry and weapons were placed
inside glass for display. The walls of the museum were adorned with
photographs taken when they did an excavation there.
Re-Orientation After a quick lunch with Novi and my parents, we decided it was
time to go back home. We really had the time of our lives!

Task 3:
Arrange these jumbled paragraphs into a coherent recount text.
A Visit to a Sheep Propert

This was a very long day but I enjoyed it a lot.

I was tired by the end of the day in the shed but our work wasn’t finished. We all had
to help to get the weathers and lambs back into the paddocks. As well, we had to get a mob
of ewes and their lambs into the yards for shearing the next day. Then it was time for tea
(that’s what my nanna calls dinner).
Last holiday I visited a sheep property. I helped in the shearing sheds and in the yards.
After lunch, we started shearing the lambs. There were more that 400 so we didn’t
finish until the next day. Once again I was sweeping and picking up dags.
On the first day the Merino wethers were crutched. I helped by sweeping up after the
rouseabout picked up the wool pieces. Shearers start early (at 7.30 am).

The best arrangement is…..

My Day
I had a terrible day yesterday. First, I woke up an hour late because my alarm clock didn’t go
off. Then, I was in such a hurry that I burned my hand when I was making breakfast. After breakfast,
I got dressed so quickly that I forgot to wear socks.
Next, I ran out of the house trying to get the 9:30 bus, but of course I missed it. I wanted to
take a taxi, but I didn’t have enough money.
Finally, I walked three miles to my school only to discover that it was Sunday! I hope I never

A Trip to Snow Mountains
When my family was living in Sydney, we used to go to a place called Snow Mountains
because Sydney never has snow in winter. Well the weather can get very, very cold, and the
temperature could go as minus 5 degrees Celsius, but it never snows. That was the reason why we
liked going to Snow Mountains.
Our first trip to Snow Mountains was very exciting. We went with a group of foreign students
from different parts of the world. We went by bus to Canberra and then we went up to the
mountain. And believe me; you need to be an expert driver because the road was rough and wet.
We had to go very slowly and cautiously.
Luckily, our driver was a real professional. He did a great job taking us to the mountains, but I
saw many good cars sliding off the roads. The police were made busy by those accidents, but the
police seemed to have anticipated the situations. They had all kinds’ equipment to help the poor
cars.
When we reached the resort area, a nice warm meal was waiting in a nice and warm dining
room. It was a relief. Then we had to hire the “Snow-Mountain gear” like caps, scarves, thick jackets,
and snow boots. We simply had to do that or we would have been freezing to death. I felt really big
and fat in that outfit and I had to learn how to walk in snow.
The most exciting part was the toboggan ride. Toboggan is basically a fiberglass board
designed to slide down the snowy slopes. So I climbed up the hill and then I sat down on the
toboggan. I held on to ropes used to steer and slid down the hill. I turned out that my steering ropes
weren’t tied on correctly, so I could not control my toboggan properly. I slid down really fast without
being able to control where I was going. So I ended up plugging into a freezing cold creek!

our child. If you don’t believe me, carry me to the river. I will prove that I didn’t do
it” replied his wife calmly.

and threw herself into the river.
“Oh my God! How will I know who killed my child?” moaned Sidakpaksa.
Resolution Then he looked down the water. Suddenly, two pure white flower buds
appeared, one longer and taller than the other. A sweet fragrance came from
them. “Sidapaksa, come and have a look here! Beside me is our child. He himself
will tell you who drowned him,” the taller one spoke.
“Father, my mother is innocent. Grandmother threw me into the river. Now I
am happy because my beloved mother has come with me,” The smaller one spoke.

D. GRAMMAR REVIEW

1. Reported Speech
a) Imperative
This becomes an infinitive in reported (indirect) speech, and is usually introduced by one of
these verbs: tell, ask, order, request.

“Go away!”
I told (asked) him to go away

“Don’t be afraid!” He told me not to be afraid

Task 4:
Put into Reported Speech, using any suitable pronouns with the given verbs!
1. “Come here!” (I asked)
2. “Copy the words into your notebook!” (The teacher told)
3. “Don’t do it again!” (He asked)
4. “Don’t drop it!” (I told)
5. “Pick it up!” (He ordered)

b) Statements
When the reporting verb is in Present, Present Perfect or Future Tense, the report is in the

21
same tense as the actual spoken words. We sometimes have to change the personal
pronouns.

“I am very sorry.”
He will tell you. (that) he is very sorry
He says
He has just told me
The conjunction “that” may be omitted.

Task 5:
Put the following sentences into the Reported Speech!
1. “We are very late.” (He says)
2. “I want to speak to you.” (He has just told me)
3. “They do not know you.” (I have explained)
4. “You have done your homework well.” (The teacher will tell her)
5. “You are not working hard enough.” (Our teacher says)

c) Statements
When the reporting verb is in past time, the tenses of the actual spoken words are
related to this past time and change accordingly. The common changes are:

Present to past

Past to past perfect

He goes To he went
He will go To he would go
He has gone and he went To he had gone

Pronouns may have to change according to the sense of the report.

It is also sometimes logically necessary to change certain adverbs of place and times
into more “distant” ones to suit past time. The common changes are:

Now To then
Yesterday To The day before
....... ago To ........... before
Last .......... To ........... before
Tomorrow To The day after
Next ......... To .......... after
Today To That day
Tonight To That night
Here To there
This To that

Task 6:

22
Put the following sentences into the Reported Speech!
1. “I met him last year.” (She said)
2. “She has just finished now.” (They told us)
3. “I am living in London.” (I said)
4. “I’ve just been to the butcher’s.” (Henry said)
5. “I can come next week.” (Andy told her)

d) Questions (with question-words)

Except when the question-word itself is the subject (who? What? Which?), the subject and
verb (or helping verb) change places in a direct question.

“Who will help you?” He asked me why I was late

The example above is different with:

“Why are you late?” He asked me why I was late

The common verbs introducing Reported Speech are: ask, enquire, wonder, want to know

The same tense-changes, etc., are made as for statements when introducing verb is in the
Past time.

Task 7:
Put the following sentences into the Reported Speech!
1. “When are you going?” (He asked me ........)
2. “How did you do that?” (He wanted to know.......)
3. “Why are you so sad?” (I asked her .........)
4. “When did you do it?” (Anto asked her .......)
5. “Who will come to the pictures wiht me?” (Andy wanted to know .....)

e) Questions (Yes/No Questions)

Questions made by putting the verb (helping verb) before the subject (sometimes called
Yes/No Questions) require the word whether of if to join them to the introducing verb.

The word-order becomes that of an ordinary statement, and there are the usual tense-
changes if introducing verbs is in the past.

Task 8:
Put the following sentences into the Reported Speech!
1. “Have you seen my new hat?” (He asked me .....)
2. “Did you see the match yesterday?” (Helen asked him .....)
3. “Do I look alright?” (She wanted to know .....)
4. “Are the grapes sour?” (Andy asked Siti .....)
5. “Can you understand me?” (Jonny asked Joanna)

THE GOLDEN EGGS
Long time ago, a remote village, in central China, was inhabited mainly with farmers and
hunters.
One day, a poor farmer lost his entire livestock to flood. He prayed hard to God for help or his
family would die of starvation.
Few days later, an old man with long grey beard, passed by his house took pity on him. He
gave him a goose and said “I don’t have any expensive thing to give you and hope this goose will you
to ease your hardship.”
A week later to his utmost surprise the farmer found an egg in his yard. This was not ordinary
egg. It was a golden egg. He was suddenly overcome with joy.
Thereafter, the livelihood had rapidly improved but the farmer had forgotten his earlier
hardship. He became lazy, arrogant, and spendthrift.
Strangely, the goose only laid one golden egg every six months. The greedy farmer lost his
patient and slaughtered his goose thinking there were plenty of golden eggs inside its stomach.
Though he very much regretted for his foolishness, it’s already too late.

sleep for a hundred years. Then the prince will come and she will wake up.”
Seventeen years passed and the princess grew up to be a beautiful and clever girl.
One day she went to a part of the palace where she has never been before. She sat down in
front of an old spinning wheel and cut her hand on a spindle. Then she went to sleep and so did
everyone else in the palace.
A hundred years later a young prince came and saw the palace among high trees. He went
upstairs. The Prince came to a room and found the Princess sleeping. He kneels beside her and said,

build your story to a point of interest. This is the climax of the story. You should end by rounding

C. SUMMARY OF NARRATIVE TEXT 2

Narrative text type

Based on perception in time. Narration is the telling of a story: the succession of events is given in
chronological order

Purpose
The basic purpose of narrative is to entertain, to gain and hold a readers’ interest. However
narratives can also be written to teach or inform, to change attitudes/ social opinions e.g. soap
operas and television dramas that are used to raise topical issues. Narratives sequence
people/characters in time and place but differ from recounts in that through the sequencing, the
stories set up one or more problems, which must eventually find a way to be resolved. The common
structure or basic plan of narrative text is known as the “story grammar.” Although there are
numerous variations of the story grammar, the typical elements are: (setting) - When and where the
story occurs; (characters) - the most important people or players in the story; (initiating event) - an
action or occurrence that establishes a problem and/or goal; (conflict/goal) - the focal point arround
which the whole story is organized; (events) - one or more attempts by the main character (s) to
achieve the goal or solve the problem; (resolution) - the outcome of the attempts to achieve the
goal or solve the problem; (theme) - the main idea or moral of the story. The graphic representation
of these story grammar elements is called a story map. The exact form and complexity of a map
depends, of course, upon the unique structure of each narrative and the personal preference of the
teacher constructing the map.

Types Of Narrative
There are many types of narrative. They can be imaginary, factual or a combination of both. They
may include fairy stories, mysteries, science fiction, romances, horror stories, adventure stories,
fables, myths and legends, historical narratives, ballads, slice of life, personal experience. Features *
Characters with defined personalities/identities. * Dialogue often included-tense may change to the
present or the future. * Descriptive language to create images in the reader’s mind and enhance the
story.

Structure
In a traditional narrative the focus of the text is on a series of actions:
 Orientation: (introduction) in which the characters, setting and time of the story are
established. Usually answers who? When? Where? E. g. Mr. Wolf went out hunting in the
forest one dark gloomy night.
 Complication or problem: the complication usually involves the main character(s) (often

66
mirroring the complications in real life).
 Resolution: there needs to be a resolution of the complication. The complication may be
resolved for better or worse/happily or unhappily. Sometimes there are a number of
complications that have to be resolved. These add and sustain interest and suspense for the
reader. Furthermore, when there is plan for writing narrative texts, the focus should be on
the following characteristics: (Plot): what is going to happen?; (Setting): where will the story
take place? When will the story take place?; (Characterization): who are the main
characters? What do they look like?; (Structure): how will the story begin? What will be the
problem? How is the problem going to be resolved?; (Theme): what is the theme/message
the writer is attempting to communicate?

packed his food, and his father gave him a sword. Having blessed Momotaro, they sent him off on
his journey.

Sailing on his boat, Momotaro met an eagle going in the same direction. They became good
friends; soon, both of them arrived on the island of the pirates.

Momotaro drew out the sacred sword his father had given him and began to fight the pirates.
The eagle flew over the thieves’ heads, pecking at their eyes. Finally, the pirates were defeated.
Momotaro brought home all the goods that pirates had stolen. His parents were proud of

Description It is located 110 kilometers South of Brisbane and is reached by following
the Pacific Highway to Nerang and then by travelling through the
Numinbah Valley. This scenic roadway lies in the shadow of the
Lamington National Park. The phenomenon of the rock formed into a
natural ‘arch’ and the cave through which a waterfall cascades is a short
1 kilometer walk below a dense rainforest canopy from the main picnic
area. Swimming is permitted in the rock pools. Night-time visitors to the
cave will discover the unique feature of the glow worms. Picnic areas
offer toilets, barbecues, shelter sheds, water and fireplaces; however,
overnight camping is not permitted.

88
Task 3:
Understand the tips how to write a descriptive essay.
The next time you get a chance, pick up an apple. Feel the weight of it in your hand. Examine it for
blemishes. What caused that little black spot? Did the apple tenaciously hang onto the wind-whipped
tree branch as a storm dashed it into a neighboring twig? Did a puckish bird sample the apple for
ripeness? Look at the apple again and feel it as it warms in your hand. Anticipate the burst of flavor
as your teeth crunch through the rich redness of its thin skin.

The above is a sample of descriptive writing and a hint of some of the ways you can take an ordinary
object. When writing a descriptive essay, start building your description by brainstorming the facts
 Red Apple
 Brown Stem
 Small black blemish near the top
 Thin skin
 Juicy
 Crunchy
 Round
 Heavy and solid

By the time you finish this process, you’ll probably have written an objective description and only
need to put it into sentence and insert them into appropriate paragraphs of your descriptive essay.

Choose two or three of the description you’ve built and use them as the focal points of your
descriptive essay body, with supporting information that describes why they are important to your
overall view. (In this example, the ripeness of the apple.)

Conclude your descriptive essay with a summary of your points and restate the impression you
meant to create
