What is Linear Equation in two variables?
 An equation in the form of ax + by=c is called Linear Equation in two variables where
a, b and c are constants and at least one of a and b are not zero. This is also referred to as
the standard form of linear equation. The symbols x and y are variables that represents
any number that will satisfy the equation.

Example 1:
2x + 3y = 32. This equation will be true if we can find an ordered pair (x, y) that will
satisfy the equation:

First ordered pair: x= 4 and y=10


Substitute: 2x + 3y = 32
2(4) +3(10) = 32
8 + 30 = 38 ≠ 32

Second ordered pair: x=10 and y=4


Substitute: 2x + 3y = 32
2(10) +3(4) = 32
20 + 12= 32

The ordered pair (10,4), satisfies the given equation. Hence, (10,4) is called the solution of the
equation.

Example 2:
6x + 8y = 72

First ordered pair: x= 2 and y=14


Substitute: 6x + 9y = 72
6(2) +9(14) = 32
12 + 126 = 138 ≠ 72

Second ordered pair: x=10 and y=4


Substitute: 6x + 9y = 72
6(9) +9(2) = 72
54 + 18= 72

Example 3.

Find the five solutions for the linear equation x + y =3, and plot the solutions as points
on a coordinate system.
Linear Equation:
x x+y= 3 y

1 1+y=3 2

2 2+y=3 1

3 3+y=3 0

4 4+y=3 -1

5 5+y=3 -2
