The New Year 2021 is here and the world is finally
recuperating from a devastating pandemic, the effects
of which have been far reaching. World economies are
battered and the building sector - as it relies heavily on
physical work and the need for moving vast amounts of
building products - is especially affected.
With the roll-out of the vaccines over the past
months, it's now heartening to see some economies
opening up although for the near forseeable future,
its going to be very much a 'new norm' as far as public
activities are concerned. Still, we hope for the best!
Notwitstanding the tumultuous world, the editorial
team at Designscape has been hard at work and we
bring you another carefully curated collection of
projects from the far corners of this beautiful world.
In this issue, we present two flamboyant houses, one
each in South Africa and Costa Rica, a built-for-two-
families house in Kuwait, a 'just enough' dwelling in
Australia and a super luxurious penthouse situated
in Vietnam. A compact Japanese house-cum-atelier
rounds up our love for minimalist designs
We are also pleased with our increasing readership
throughout the world. Total numbers are not trackable
as we allow you to generously share the PDF copy with
friends, but we do hear from readers from new places

Water Hose Festival

Twice a year, the picturesque and quiet village of Kayabuki no Sato puts on
a popular water display. Though the event does attract tourists, its true
purpose is to test the 62 fire extinguishers scattered across the historic site.
Just before the houses (and the passersby) are doused with water, small huts
designed in the traditional style of the village open up their roofs to reveal
hidden mechanical sprinklers. As each hut transforms to a fire-fighting device,

 This high-end penthouse is located in
District 2 in Saigon, Vietnam. The project
consisted of linking together two existing
penthouses to make a unique property with
one of the best views onto Saigon River.
The first penthouse is dedicated to the
private life of the owner, with a minimalist but
cosy and elegant design. The living spaces
open towards a small pool of koi fish with
tropical plants all around. The border between
indoor and outdoor is not completely defined
leaving the the choice according to your 'moon
of the day'.
The larger penthouse is dedicated to
wellness and entertainment with an organic
spa, jacuzzi, sky pool, bar, and dining area to
welcome frie. The owner also required the
creation of a private museum space to display
specific art pieces and belongings like luxury
watches, Italian shoes, large scale sculptures,
etc.
The architects designed a masterpiece
staircase as a sculpture playing with an existing
concrete column.
The two penthouses are connected
through a wine cellar, passing from a dark
space to natural light.

The entire home was fitted with first-generation
LED lighting, with its design led by NY-based Gary
Novasel at PATDO Light Studio. At the time this was
the first full LED-equipped home in Costa Rica.
The Cielo Mar residence is a collaboration project
between NY-based firm Barnes Coy Architects, who
created the original concept & design of the home,
and SARCO Architects Costa Rica who performed the
design development, final plans and construction
management of the project.
