WORKING BACKWARDS AND SIMPLIFY THE PROBLEM

OBJECTIVES: At the end of the lesson, the students are expected to:
a) read and understand given problem situations;
b) explain working backwards and simplifying the problems
strategies using own words; and
c) use working backwards and simplifying the problems strategies
in problem solving.

WORKING BACKWARDS
It is a method of problem solving in which an individual has to undo the
problem step-by-step in chronological order by starting with the final number
in order to get the beginning number. Basically, it is negating the original
process in order to answer what is asked.

EXAMPLES:
1. Anne has a certain amount of money in her bank account
on Friday morning. during the day she writes a check for $24.50,
makes an ATM withdrawal of $80 and deposits a check for
$235. At the end of the day, she sees that her balance is
$451.25. How much money did she have in the bank at the
beginning of the day?
Answer:
$451.125 - $235 + $80 + $24.50 = $320.75

2. I am thinking of my favorite number. I multiplied it by 3,

subtracted 6 from the product, added 5 to the difference, and
divided the sum by 7, I ended up with 5.What is my favorite
number?
Answer:
5 x 7 = 35 30 + 6 = 36
35 - 5 = 30 36 ÷ 3 = 12
SIMPLIFY THE PROBLEM
Simplifying mathematics problem is a strategy that often is used along
with other problem-solving strategies. When a problem is too complex to solve
in one step, it often helps to divide it into simpler problems and solve each
one separately.

EXAMPLES:
1. Steven’s mother gave him $20 to go to the store. He
bought 3 loaves of bread, and 3 cartons of milk. The bread cost
$2 each, and the milk cost $3 for each carton. How much money
did Steven receive in change?
Answer:
Bread: $2 x 3 = $6 Milk: $3 x 3 = $9
Total: $6 + $ 9 = $15
Amount of change: $20 - $15 = $5

2. In a delicatessen, it cost $2.49 for a half pound of sliced

roasted beef. The person behind the counter slice is $0.53
pound. What should it cost?
Answer:
If a half pound cost $2.49, then one pound cost
$2.49 x 2 = $4.98.
Multiply by the number of pounds needed to get
the total:
$0.53
x $4.98
$2.6394
