I. TITLE OF MATERIAL: SOLVING ROUTINE AND NON-ROUTINE
PROBLEMS INVOLVING MULTIPLICATION WITHOUT OR WITH
ADDITION OR SUBTRACTION OF DECIMALS AND WHOLE NUMBERS
INCLUDING MONEY USING APPROPRIATE PROBLEM SOLVING
STRATEGIES AND TOOLS.

In this module, you will learn how to solve routine and non-routine
problems involving multiplication without or with addition or subtraction
of decimals and whole numbers including money using appropriate
problem solving strategies and tools. You will also learn the steps in
solving routine and non-routine problems through the examples given.
Solving problem is an important life skill, especially in terms of dealing
with money. Now it’s time to explore! Good luck and have fun!
II. OBJECTIVE:
Solves routine and non-routine problems involving multiplication without
or with addition or subtraction of decimals and whole numbers including
money using appropriate problem solving strategies and tools.
M5NS-11e-113.1
III. VOCABULARY LIST
 A routine problem is a type of problem which there is an
immediate solution.
 A non-routine problem is a problem which requires analysis
and insights into known principles of Mathematics.

IV. PRE-TEST
Solve the following problems.
1. Mario went to the market to buy 45 kilos of mango for his
mango dessert. The mango cost Php 75.50 per kilo. How
much is the total cost of mango?
2. Denver’s family donated 355 pieces of books to an
orphanage. Each book has a price of Php 46.50. How much
was the cost of all the books?
3. A kilo of oranges costs Php 56.50. How much will I spend for
5.5 kilos?
4. Cherry is 1.5m tall. Her sister Sarah is 0.38 m taller than
Cherry, who is 0.133 m shorter than Mika. What is the
combined height of the three girls?
5. Tower A is 11.56 m high. Tower B is 1.46 m higher than
Tower A while Tower C is twice as high as Tower B. What is
the combined height of the 3 towers?

1
V. LEARNING ACTIVITIES:
Example 1:
A. Routine Problem:
Kevin earns Php 450.00 a day. If he works for 24 days,
how much salary will he receive?

To solve the problem use the KWL process.

Php 450. - salary per day

What I Know (K) 24 days
What I want to Know (W) The amount of Kevin’s salary for 24
days.
What I Learn (L) To find the amount of Kevin’s salary
for 24 days.
Solution:
Php 450
x 24 The amount of Kevin’s salary for
1600 24days is Php 9 600.
+ 800
Php 9600

B. Non-routine Problem:
Milo is 1.5 m tall. Alex is 0.13 m taller than Milo while
James is twice as tall as Alex. What is the combined height of
the 3 boys?
Solution:
Milo = 1.5 m
Alex = 1.5 + 0.13
James = 2(1.5 + 0.13)
2 (1.5 + 0.13) + (1.5 + 0.13) + 1.5 = N
2 (1.63) + 1.63 + 1.5 = N

3.26 + 1.63 + 1.5

4.89 + 1.5
6.39

So the combined height of the 3 boys is 6.39 m.

2
Example 2:

Routine Problem:

A toy car costs Php 325.85. Jay bought 3 toy cars and gave the
cashier Php 1 000. How much change did he receive?

To solve the problem, use the KWL strategy:

 Know Php 325.85, amount of a toy car
3 toy cars
Php 1 000, amount of Jay’s money
 Want The amount of change he received
 Learn To find the amount of change he received

Solution:
Php 1 000 - Php 325.85 x 3
Php 1 000 - Php 977.55
Php 22.45
The amount of his change is Php 22.45.

Non-routine Problem:

Two sacks of rice weigh 55.05 kilogram each. The sack of

corn weighs 2.25 kilograms heavier than a sack of rice. Together
with the sack of wheat, the 3 weigh 245.56kg. How much does
the sack of wheat weigh?
Solution:
245.56 – [2 (55.05) + (55.05 + 2.25)] = N
245.56 – [110.1 + 57.3] = N
245.56 - 167.4 = N
78.16 kg
Therefore, the wheat weighs 78.16 kilograms.

Remember:
In solving problem, you can use the KWL process:
 What I Know (K)
It is the given data or information in the problem
 What I Want to Know (W)
It is the question/s that need to be answered in the
