What’s New
A 250 ml bottle of isopropyl alcohol
cost ₱37.45 each. How much will 5 pieces
of 250 ml bottle of isopropyl alcohol costs?
To solve our opening problem, you
can draw a diagram.

If one bottle of 250 ml isopropyl alcohol costs ₱ 37.45, then

5 bottles of 250 ml will cost 5 x ₱ 37.45 or ₱ 187.25.

Since multiplication is repeated addition, then

5 x ₱ 37.45 = ₱ 37.45 + ₱ 37.45 + ₱ 37.45 + ₱ 37.45 + ₱ 37.45 =
(5 x 37) + (5 x 0.45) = 185 +2.25 = ₱ 187.25

₱ 37.45 ₱ 37.45 ₱ 37.45 ₱ 37.45 ₱ 37.45

Step
1.
Multiply the numbers as if they are whole numbers.

₱ 37.45 3745
x 5 x 5
18725
Step Count the number of decimal places in the factors.
2.
₱ 37.45 2 decimal places
5 + 0 decimal place
Product 2 decimal places
Step Moving from right to left, count the number of decimal
3. places in the product as shown in the factors. Place
the decimal point after the needed number of decimal
places.

2
₱37.45
x 5
₱187.25 2 decimal places

Multiply Decimal Numbers

Lesson
1.2 Mentally up to Decimal Places
by 0.1, 0.01, 0.001, 10 and 100
What’s New
How to multiply decimal numbers mentally by 0.1, 0.01
and 0.001?
To multiply decimal numbers mentally by 0.1, 0.01
and 0.001:

Simply move the decimal point, 1 decimal place to the left.

Likewise, when multiplying a number by 0.01, simply move the
decimal point, 2 decimal places to the left. And lastly, when
multiplying a number by 0.001, simply move the decimal point, 3
decimal places going to the left.

47 x 0.01

38.5 x 0.001

How about multiplying decimals by 10, 100 and

1,000 mentally?

When multiplying decimals by 10 mentally, simply move

decimal point, 1 decimal place to the right. In multiplying by 100,
move the decimal point, 2 decimal places going to the right.
Lastly, if multiplying 1,000, simply move the decimal point, 3
decimal places to the right.

24.6 x 100 = 2460

Here is a list of menu inside the canteen of Maligaya Elementary School.

MENU
Lugaw with egg ₱ 10.50
Sopas ₱ 12.00
Pansit Guisado ₱ 15.00
Palitaw ₱ 6.50
Champorado ₱ 9.50
Buko Juice ₱ 6.00
Sago with Gulaman ₱ 5.50

Let us read these problems base from the menu chart

above.
1. Lito bought 3 orders of lugaw with egg. How much will
Lito pay in all?
2. Liza celebrates her birthday with her 4 friends. If she
buys pansit guisado for them, how much will Liza pay to the
cashier?

Let’s now solve the first problem using Polya’s 4 steps

1. Understand the Problem

 What is asked?
The total amount of cost Lito will pay in all.
 What are the given facts?
3 orders of lugaw with egg, ₱10.50
2. Plan on how to solve the problem.
 What is the operation to be used?
Multiplication
 What is the number sentence?
( ₱ 10.50 x 3 ) = N
3. Solve the problem.
 Show the solution.
For the total amount of order Lito will pay:

4
1
₱ 10.50
x3
₱ 31.50

4. Check and look back.

 Check if your answer is correct.
₱ 31.50 ÷ 3 = ₱ 10.50
 State the complete answer.
The total amount of cost Lito will pay in all is ₱ 10.50.
Let’s try solve the second word problem above.
1. Understand the Problem.
 What is asked?
The total amount of cost Liza will pay in the cashier.
 What are the given facts?
₱ 15.00, 4 friends

2. Plan on how to solve the problem.

 What is the operation to be used?
multiplication
 What is the number sentence?
( ₱ 15.00 x 4 ) = N

3. Solve the problem.

 Show the solution.
For the total amount of order Liza will pay:
2
₱ 15.00
x 4

₱ 60.00
4. Check and look back.
 Check if your answer is correct.
₱ 60.00 ÷ 4 = ₱ 15.00

 State the complete answer.

The total amount of cost Liza will pay in the cashier
is ₱ 60.00.

What is It
Harriet saved ₱ 95.75 in August and ₱ 115.50 in
September. Then she bought 3 pieces of head band for ₱ 25.00
each. How much of her savings from August and September
was left?
Let’s now solve the problem following the steps below.

1. Understand the Problem.

 What is asked?
The amount of Harriet savings left from August and
September.
 What are the given facts?

6
₱ 95.75 in August, ₱115.50 in September, ₱25.00 of
each head band
 What is the hidden question/s?

The total amount of her savings from August and

September. The total amount of head bands she purchased.

2. Plan on how to solve the problem.

 What is the operation to be used?
Addition, multiplication, and subtraction
 What shall we add?
Add the amount of Harriet’s savings from August and
September.
( ₱ 95.75 + ₱115.50 = N )
 What shall we multiply?
Multiply the no. of head bands purchased to the price.
( ₱ 25.00 x 3 = N )
 What shall we subtract?
Subtract the total amount of savings to the total
amount of items purchased. ( total amount of savings –
total amount of items purchased = N )
 What is the number sentence?
( ₱ 95.75 + ₱115.50 ) - ( ₱ 25.00 x 3 ) = N
3. Solve and look back.
 Show the solution.
For the amount of savings: For the amount of items
purchased:

111 1
₱ 95.75 ₱ 25.00
+ ₱ 115.50 x 3
₱ 211.25 ₱ 75.00

For the total amount of her savings left

7
 Check and look back.

 State the complete answer.

Harriet savings left from August and September was ₱ 136.25.
