INF 399D: Research Methods in Computing

Course Description
This course focuses on developing the skills needed to plan, conduct, and report on research in
the Computer Science, Information Technology, and Information Systems domains. This course
will cover techniques applicable to each of the steps of a research project, including formulating
research questions, theory building, data analysis (using both qualitative and quantitative
methods), building evidence, assessing validity, and publishing.

Learning Outcome
On the successful completion of this course, student will be able to:
 Understand research terminology
 Identify the components of a literature review process
 Understand the strengths and weakness of the various research methodologies
 Be aware of the ethical principles of research, ethical challenges and approval processes
 Conduct investigations to collect data
 Report the results of these investigations.
