John Black was bored at his old school. But since he started at the Studio School in New York, he feels more
positive. In his old school, he listened to instructions from teachers all the time; but in his new school, teenagers
work on interesting projects as a team. In Studio School, students learn about the world around them. The small
numbers of students in each class means teachers can focus on each student. Many students then go on to
university. The teachers say that their students feel excited about learning at the Studio School.
Kakenya Ntaiya comes from Enoosaen, a small village in Kenya. It's a poor place and many girls don't go to school.
They get married very young and have children. But Kakenya wanted an education. Her dream was to become a
teacher. She went to school and worked very hard. She then went to university in the USA, but she never forgot her
village. She wanted all the girls in her village to be able to do the same things that she did. So Kakenya went back
to Kenya and built a school for girls there. Now, the girls have the chance to have a good education and a better
future.
Tinkering School
The Tinkering School in San Francisco is a summer school for children and teenagers. The students stay at the
school for five days. They feed the animals on a farm there and eat good food. They work on projects in teams. Past
projects include building a rollercoaster, building a tree house and making boats. The students solved problems by
working together to make these things. The school environment is mainly outdoors, and this makes it even more
fun.
