Specific Competences Test: Speaking

Specific Competence 2: Presentation
1 Imagine a radio show has a programme called A history of our lives in 100 objects and is asking
listeners to send them voice messages about great objects. Describe an everyday object that you or
your family like very much.
First, choose one type from the box or your own idea.

backpack / bag classroom object car clothing computer electronic gadget

shoes / trainers sports equipment watch

a Think and plan

• What is your object?

• Where and when did you or your family get the object?

• How often do you use it?

• What do you like about it?

• What is it made of (e.g. cotton, plastic, metal, wood, etc.)?

• What adjectives can you use to describe it (e.g. attractive, brilliant, eco-friendly, well- / badly designed, etc.)?

• What else do you know about it?

Remember: When you don’t know what something is called in English, try to explain it in your own words.

b Practise your presentation with a partner. Speak slowly and clearly. Think of two positive things
to say about your partner's presentation.

c Now do your presentation or create your voice message. (Your teacher will tell you which one of
these to do.) Talk about your object.

Specific Competence 3: Spoken Interaction
2 Work in small groups. Imagine you are friends and you are choosing a film to watch together after
school.
First, think of one or two films that you would like to watch. The films can be in your own language or in
English. Also think about when and where you can watch the film, and what snacks you can bring.

Then, talk in your group. Make suggestions and respond to them with appropriate key phrases. Agree on:
• a film
• a time
• a place
• snacks

Remember: Show interest during the conversation by listening carefully, asking the other people
questions, responding to their answers and expressing surprise.
