My first job
When I was 14, I got my first job. I started doing a newspaper round. It’s one of the most
popular first jobs for boys and girls in England and you must be at least 13 years old before you
can do it. In my job, I got up at six o’clock in the morning every Saturday and Sunday, went to
the newspaper shop, and packed a big bag with newspapers. The man in the shop always
made me a cup of tea. Then I delivered newspapers to a lot of houses. I earned £5 an hour and
it took three hours to do the newspaper round on Saturday, and four hours on Sunday because
my bag was heavier and my round was longer.
Doing a newspaper round isn’t easy. You must get up very early and you mustn’t be lazy or
unreliable. You should also be fit and strong. It’s hard, but it’s also fun. I don’t do a paper round
anymore, but my younger sister Sally is going to do my old paper round in the summer. I’m
stronger than her, but she’s fitter than me, so I think she’s going to be a great newspaper
delivery girl!
1 How old was the writer when he started doing the newspaper round?

2 What did the man in the newspaper shop do for the writer every Sunday morning?

3 Why did it take longer to do the newspaper round on Sundays?
