TedTalk 3
The purpose of the speech was to inform. I think this because he poses a
problem and solutions but does not have a bias toward the solutions. The thesis is that
there are habits that we need to move away from.
In Julian speech, he offers 4 ways to get your audience to listen to you. What strategy
do you plan to use or improve on during your speech? Are there any other strategy you
think we should add to help your audience to listen to you more effectively? In Chapter
12.3 of the textbook, it discusses 4 different types of listening styles. How can these
strategies differ based off the types of listening?
I plan to use honesty and authenticity and improve upon love. Adding other skills and
effects like vocal variance, appearance, and visual aids could all help your audience
listen more effectively. If your audience is listening just for fun, you can use less formal
verbiage, dress more casually, and use more comic pictures. If the audience is there to
learn something, you should use more formal language, dress nice, and use more
diagrams than pictures.
What do you believe is the greatest barrier to effective listening in today's society? What
would you recommend people do to overcome this barrier to listening? How do you
think this would improve communication-based on the chapter or the TedTalk?
In Chapter 12.4, it discusses 2 different types of noise: internal and external? Provide
some examples of these types of noise and what can you do to control those noise
while both presenting or listening to a speech?
Internal noise is things like intrusive thoughts or tinnitus. External noise is like a plane
flying over or a baby screaming at the top of their lungs. There’s not much you can do
about a baby or plane but focus is the key. Stay focused on what is being said or what
you are trying to say.
What do you think you should consider when evaluating a speech? Look at Chapter 13
of the book and how do the book recommendations line up with the speech? Reflect on
your last speech, what do you think you can improve on?
Mannerisms, language, and content are the three major items to consider when
evaluating a speech. Is the speaker standing like a stone or moving too much? Is he
using language that belongs in prison or at a symposium? Is she using relevant data or
stories? The speech and book line up nicely, there’s a few differences though. I think I
could improve on rambling and moving more openly.
