Assignment 1 - Past Year Questions April 2011
Question 1 Explain briefly the difference between energy management and energy audit [6 marks] Energy Management EM is an activity organised to optimise the use of energy by avoiding waste or recovering unused energy in processes or facilities. EM primarily seeks to utilise energy (electricity and fuel) more efficiently without reducing production levels or lowering product quality, safety and environmental standards. EM must be cost effectiveness: energy effiency (EE) should only be practiced if its end result proves profitable to the company. Energy Audit Energy Audit is a systematic study or survey of a building or plant to identify how and where that building can reduce energy consumption and save energy costs. It is a useful procedure to find out the best options for energy conservation. Provide an analysis of the amount of energy consumed during given period in the form of electricity, gas, fuel, oil and steam.
Question 2 Describe six (6) steps which need to be carried out during an energy audit for the improvement of energy efficiency at any facility? [12 marks]
Step1 (Plant Familiarisation) The energy team would first have a discussion with the plant management on the general background of the company and on the overall process operations. Then, try to establish the plants level of commitment and the extent to which the plant management is willing to invest. Then, tour around the plant to familiarize the team with the processes and process equipment.
Step 2 (Gathering Plant Data) Some information is needed: i. ii. iii. iv. v. vi. vii. Monthly energy consumption profile. Equipment list by sections. Individual equipment and overall plant production rate. Individual process equipment specifications. Energy consumption for overall plant and individual process equipment. Periods of operation and annual plant and equipment operating hours. Fuel, type, characteristics and composition.
Step 3 (Analysis of the results) Data collected from individual equipment are used to perform energy balance for the sections of the process under study. The energy terms are calculated by using the established First and Second Law Energy balance equations (for pure components and mixtures), steam and pure component thermodynamic tables, enthalpy correlations and some readily available charts/nomographs.
Step 4 (Enenrgy conservation measures) It can be classified as short term, medium term and long term measures according to estimated payback period for the investment.
Step 5 (Economic Analysis) From the Standard equipment to high efficiency equipment.
Step 6 (Presentation of The Audit Reports) An audit report is usually prepared in site by the energy audit team. The content of the report include energy balance figures on the equipment studied. The areas of potential energy savings, the recommended measures to save energy, the amount of saving and the estimated investment are among the key items to be highlighted. The report is represented by the auditors to the plant management at the end of the study session.
Question 3 List seven (7) types of information which need to be collected during the detailed energy audit [7 marks]
The seven (7) types of information which need to be collected are: i. ii. iii. iv. v. vi. vii. Monthly energy consumption profile. Equipment list by sections. Individual equipment and overall plant production rate. Individual process equipment specifications. Energy consumption for overall plant and individual process equipment. Periods of operation and annual plant and equipment operating hours. Fuel, type, characteristics and composition.
