INTRODUCTION

Karate is a dynamic, explosive, and highly rewarding martial art that

combines physical fitness with mental and spiritual training. It is ideal for
all ages, and it has something to offer to everyone. Above all when you
begin your karate journey, you are throwing down a challenge to your
mind, body and spirit, a challenge that will build strength of character and
help you to overcome your fears. This is a perfect way to supplement your
training whether you are taking up karate for the first time or already have
some training under your belt. This is an ideal training aid and can be used
anytime and anywhere so there is no excuse for not practicing your
techniques.

First, don't be surprised by the mixed grades. This shouldn't be a

problem because a good instructor will be able to cater for you as well as
for the senior students. And don't worry if you feel nervous to start off
with. It will help to keep you on your toes. Each class will start and end
with a formal bow to the instructor, followed by a general warm up.
Classes are roughly one to two hours in duration. Karatedo is literally the
art of the empty hand. Kara meaning empty, te meaning hand and do means
art. The student must often stand on one foot to attack or defend. Thus,
balance is very important and lowering your body will make your punch
and kick strong and it’s easier to move if your center of gravity is in the
middle of your body or between your feet. But, sometimes the distribution
of your weight me depends on what technique you will be using as it may
shift your weight to your front leg or back leg.

BRIEF HISTORY OF KARATE

The origin of karate dates back more than a thousand years. Back in
the days in a Shao Lin monastery in China, students taught physical
training methods in order to build endurance and physical strength. This
physical training known today as Shao Lin art of fighting. This martial art
was imported to Okinawa, Japan and blended with local fighting
techniques there which we know today as Karate. Gichin Funakoshi is the
most popular martial artist in karate which made the karate very popular
not only in Japan but all over the world. He is the founder of Shotokan
karate which is also the most practice type of karate discipline today.

Gichin Funakoshi introduce karate to the public in 1992 when he was

invited to lecture and demonstrate at an exhibition of traditional martial
arts sponsored by the Ministry of Education. During his demonstration
many people are been impressed which give ways to have many requests
from the people to teach in Tokyo. This is the beginning where he teaches
in different universities in Japan and he was able to established the
Shotokan in 1936. Karate is taught to be a self-defense martial art using
only parts of your body to protect yourself. This been practice by Japanese
with discipline and great respect which you can only use this art to defend
yourself and not to attack somebody. Today karate is widely taught in
many clubs, schools especially for criminology students as their physical
education subject in the Philippines. This is also part of training program
for policemen and armed forces in Japan.
