Location: Canada is the northernmost country in the Americas. It only has borders with one
country, the United States. It also has a coastline with the Atlantic Ocean to the east, the Pacific
Ocean to the west, and the Arctic Ocean to the north. Its official languages are English and French.

Political characteristics: Canada is a constitutional monarchy, Queen Elizabeth II is Queen of


Canada and as such, Head of Government of the country. She delegates her powers to her
representative, the Governor General of Canada. The Prime Minister and his Cabinet exercise
executive power. The Constitution of Canada (English and French) defines the federal structure of
the government, as well as its functions and powers.

Territorial: Canada is a North American federation made up of ten provinces (British Columbia,
Alberta, Saskatchewan, Manitoba, Ontario, Quebec, New Brunswick, Nova Scotia, Prince Edward
Island and Newfoundland and Labrador) and three territories (Yukon, Northwest Territories and
Nunavut), making up the second largest country in the world, with a surface area of 9,985 million
km².

Socioeconomic: Canada is one of the 10 most important economies in the world by volume of
GDP. Its public debt in 2018 was 1,303,612 million euros, with a debt of 89.94% of GDP. Its debt
per capita is 35,238 euros per inhabitant, then its inhabitants are among the most indebted in the
world.
GDP per capita is a particularly good indicator of living standards and in the case of Canada, in
2019, it was 41,923 euros, so Canadian citizens have a good standard of living.

Historical, cultural or religious particularities: Canada has been inhabited by indigenous peoples
and by a variety of important different cultures. First Nations peoples and the Métis played a key
role in the development of European colonies in Canada, in particular for their role in assisting the
coureur des bois and European voyageurs in exploring the continent during the North American
fur trade . The name "Canadá" it self derives from the Iroquoian word for St. Lawrence which

1. How does the problem present itself in my commission?

Education in human rights. Canada has one of the best quality of education in the world. As we
can see, Canada spends approximately 7% of its GDP on education and most schools in Canada
have introduced for some years now one or more initiatives such as native studies, anti-racism,
study of aboriginal cultures and crafts, visits and assistance to elders and other community
members, and content in areas such as indigenous languages, indigenous spirituality, indigenous
knowledge of nature and visits to existing indigenous communities.
