come from zero to 501!) In 2003, the WMU accepted the shoebox project as an annual fall event. Our churchs participation in OCC was named in memory of a youth leader, Linda Groome, as a lasting tribute to the love and joy she shared with others in giving so much of herself. In personalizing the shoebox project to our church, every effort was made to recognize the OCC trademark as not to infringe upon Samaritans Purse. The following factors have made Operation Christmas Child a success at WLBC: Having designated OCC space within the church for members to leave empty shoeboxes, for it takes time and space to collect and hold 1500 empty boxes for wrapping; wrapping boxes ahead of time; establishing a set time each year to distribute and collect boxes (distribution is always the Sunday after the wrapping party with the return on the last Sunday in October)...we do this early enough not to interfere with holiday plans; the GA/RA packing party and the Youth packing party; getting WMU circles involved; personalizing the effort with a memorial; people donating wrapping paper, tape, Happy Meal toys, toothbrushes, hotel soaps, stuffed animals, etc., and bargain hunters who shop all year to help fill the boxes to the brim! WLBC is committed to missions; this is a great opportunity for everyone in the church family. Some people buy so much stuff that they actually end up filling more than one box and donating the (cont. pg 3)

WLBC History with Operation Christmas Child

In 2000, the shoebox project was introduced to our church as a youth activity. They met one fall night and went to the Dollar Store as a group and purchased items. Then, they went to a youth leaders house to wrap and fill their box with goodies (how can you get so much stuff in one box!). The OCC video was shown and it really opened the eyes of all in attendance. It was humbling to realize how much each one of us had and how little it took to make an impact on a child by giving them their own Christmas box! The following year, the project was opened to the entire congregation and people volunteered as chair and co-chair. The OCC video was shown in each Sunday School class to familiarize members with the project. In planning for the third Christmas, a wrap party was held in September and the first Sunday in October, the youth handed out wrapped shoeboxes to members after the morning service. Handing out already wrapped boxes increased participation. That Christmas, our church collected 501 boxes. (In just three years, we had

Some grandmothers have completed a box for each of their grandchildren. It seems like we fill our boxes with the anticipation of our own surprise when we realize that a child somewhere someplace will receive our box. Parents can use this activity to teach sharing and to help explain being blessed materially and why we can afford both financially, physically and emotionally to contribute. More importantly, parents can share the story of Christmas and salvation to their own children. It is a joy to be a part of fulfilling a childs eager anticipation of a gift. What a mechanism to use, a wrapped filled shoebox, to plant the seed of salvation from our Lord Jesus Christ!

The Linda Groome Shoebox Project

There is no I in TEAM! Operation Christmas Child was a successful Saturday in that we had 29 people come and wrap shoeboxes from 9:00 am until 2:30 pm. All totaled, there are 680 shoeboxes wrapped and ready for filling. We also had 12 motorcycles with 14 riders participate in our fall fundraising ride which helped to make it a great Shoebox day! A special thanks to Winston for handling the lunch details. Please pick up your boxes and start filling today.

Deacon of the Week: Jim Taylor 434.941.3917

Many times we are asked, Who is my deacon? To help you, we will list the Deacon of the Week and his list of families in the WLBC Bulletin ENewsletter. There will be a complete list posted on the bulletin board near the church office. This complete list is alphabetical by your last name. We hope this will help you know who your deacon is for the year. If you have any questions, please feel free to contact the church office.

In fact, three times Jesus asked the man the same question. The man was hurt because he felt Jesus did not trust him or could not count on him. Who was that man? A. James B. (Simon) Peter C. Philip D. John The answer is in John 21:17. The Sunday school teacher asked each of her children to write a short note to a missionary to tell him they were praying for him. "The missionary," the teacher said, "is a very busy man, so tell him that he is not expected to answer the class." When they were finished, the teacher went over the letters to see what the children had written. One little girl had written, "Dear Brother Brown, we're praying for you. We don't expect an answer."
