    A synapse is the gap between two neurons, where an electrical impulse traveling along the presynaptic neuron causes neurotransmitter vesicles to release their chemical messenger across the synaptic cleft and bind to receptors on the postsynaptic neuron, stimulating an electrical impulse to continue along that neuron. The diagram shows neurotransmitters stored in vesicles in the presynaptic neuron being released into the synaptic cleft upon arrival of a nerve impulse and diffusing across to bind with receptors on the postsynaptic neuron, triggering an impulse in that neuron.
