SUCCESS CRITERIA

Pupils can:
a. read the text and answer the questions.
b. guess the meaning of unfamiliar words in the text.

1. Draw two columns on the board with the headings Healthy and Unhealthy.
2. Put the class into teams of three or four and give each team a piece of paper.
3. They copy the headings on the board.
4. Give the teams five minutes to write as many food items in the appropriate column as they can.
Pre-lesson
5. Elicit items from the class.
6. A correct item that more than one team has wins one point. I
7. f no other team has it, it wins two points.
8. The team with the most points wins.

9. Activity 1:
a. Tell pupils the title of the text (Sugar, Sugar).
b. Ask them if they think it is about healthy or unhealthy eating.
Lesson delivery
c. Ask pupils if they like sugar and sugary foods.
d. Elicit some examples of food with high sugar content that they like and/or eat often.
e. Talk to pupils about the dangers of eating too much sugar (e.g. obesity, diabetes, tooth decay). (CCE:
Values).
f. Refer pupils to pages 108-109 and ask Where can you find this kind of text? (on the internet)
g. Pupils answer pre-reading questions. (Assessment)
10. Activity 2:
a. Give pupils five minutes to read the text and decide which two options describe what it is about.
b. Encourage them to find and underline information in the text to support their answers.
c. Conduct feedback with the class.
d. Read the text again, asking volunteers to read out each post.
e. Ask the pupils to write down the name of the app mentioned in the discussion forum and what it is for
('Sugar smart'. It tells you how much sugar is in a product.).
f. Ask pupils if any information in the text surprised them.
g. They talk to their partner to find at least one thing that surprised them or that they found particularly
interesting, then report to the class.
11. Activity 3:
a. Pupils scan the text to find the words in the vocabulary panel.
b. They use the context to work out their meanings. (Assessment)
c. Ask them to check their answers in the dictionary on page 142 of the Pupil's Book.
d. Read out definitions from the dictionary in the fallowing order: product, diet, app, teaspoon, sweet,
blame, media, snack, choice, barcode.
e. The class call out the words.
f. Check and correct pronunciation as necessary.
12. Activity 4:
a. Pupils choose five of the words in the vocabulary panel and write a sentence for each one.

13. Ask volunteers to read their sentences out.
