PART – B
1. Draw a Cam profile to give simple harmonic motion to the mechanism, with the
following data: The Min. Distance between cam & follower centre = 4 cm, Roller
diameter of follower = 2.5 cm and the total Lift = 5 cm. The motion required is 120°
dwell at min. Displacement, 60° lift with SHM; 120° dwell at max. Displacement; 60°
fall with SHM.

2. A shedding tappet is to designed for a three-shaft weave, the shaft being down for one
pick and up For two. The treadle lever is connected directly to shaft, and the ‘down’
position of the bowl corresponds to the ‘down’ position of the shaft, the lifting operation
being carried out by means of spring. Particulars of the movement are as follows ;
i) Nearest distance between bowl & tappet centre = 9 cm,
ii) lift of tappet = 5 cm,
iii) diameter of anti-friction bowl = 7.5 cm,
iv) Duration of dwell = 1/3 rd
of pick. If the shaft movement is SHM and
the lift line is straight and passing through tappet Centre, Design the
Tappet by of Geometric Construction.
3. Draw the profile of a cam operating a roller reciprocating follower and with the
following data: Minimum radius of the cam = 25 mm; Lift = 30 mm; Roller Diameter =
15 mm; The cam lifts the follower for 120° with SHM, followed by a dwell period of
30°. Then the follower Lowers down during 150° of cam rotation with uniform velocity
followed by a dwell period.
4. Design a shedding cam to weave 3/2 twill. The particulars are; Lift of tappet = 80 mm;
Type of Movement = SHM; Dwell period = 1/3 rd of pick; nearest distance between cam
& roller canters = 75mm; Roller Diameter = 60 mm; Assume any other data suitably.
5. Derive the i) Power requirements in picking operation. ii) Equation for ring frame
traveller velocity.
6. Derive the relationship of Sley eccentricity (e) with connecting arm length (I) and crank
radius (r). Also prove that the beat up force is maximum at front centre.
7. Explain the forces acting in heald reversing system.
8. Draw a typical 3 over 3 conventional ring frame top arm loading system indicating the
applied force and reaction components and explain it.

9. A carding engine cylinder revolving at 180 rpm has 35,000 joules of kinetic energy
stored in it when the belt is shifted of the m/c comes to rest in 130 revolutions. Assuming
that the KE is the total for all the moving parts of the m/c; find the power requirement to
run it at its operating speed of 180rpm and also the time requirement to stop the m/c.
10. A shuttle 3 ft above the floor level and moving at 30 ft/s flies out of the loom at an angle
of 10° to the horizontal. How high will it rise, how fast will it move horizontally before
it strikes the floor, how fast and in what direction is it then moving?

11. A Jacquard loom produces a fabric with 20 picks/cm at a rate of 2.4 m/h. If the pattern
repeat in the fabric occurs at 36 cm intervals and the width of a card is 8 cm, calculate
the length of the pattern chain and the average speed of its motion.

12. Calculate the work done in lifting a bale of fibres of mass 120 kg from the ground to a
delivery bay 3 m above ground level. If the bale accidentally slips from the bay, what
power is expended in its fall?

13. A ring frame traveller, moving in a circle of 5-cm diameter at 9000 rev/min, offers a
resistance to movement of 0.15 N. If the frame has 240 spindles, calculate the power
expended in moving the travellers.

14. A cylinder has a mass of 500 kg and radius of gyration of 20 inches. What torque and
power are required to activate the cylinder to operating speed of 450 rpm from rest after
making 120 revolutions? Find the time taken.

15. A card cylinder is disconnected from its drive and from the remaining parts of the m/c so
that it can rotate freely in its bearings for a test as bearing friction. In this best a rope is
coiled around a pulley on the cylinder shaft passed around a frictionless pulley system
suspended from the roof and connected to 20 kg weight this wt is allowed to fall from
the height of 3 m to the ground. It takes is in doing so and rotates the cylinder through 1,
5 rev. At the instant that it strike the ground, the rope disengages itself from the pulley
and the cylinder comes to rest after further 7 rev. Calculate KE in weight when it reaches
the floor, in the cylinder at the same instant, and in the cylinder running at its normal
speed of 3 rps on the assumption that the frictional resistance at the bearings remains
unchanged throughout the various arrangements.
