11.a.) The turning moment diagram for a four stroke gas engine may be assumed for simplicity to be represented by four triangles, the
areas of which from the line of zero pressure are as follows: Expansion stroke = 3550 mm2; exhaust stroke = 500 mm2; suction stroke
= 350 mm2; and compression stroke = 1400 mm2. Each mm2 represents 3 N-m. Assuming the resisting moment to be uniform, find
the mass of the rim of a flywheel required to keep the mean speed 200 r.p.m. within ± 2%. The mean radius of the rim may be taken
as 0.75 m. Also determine the crank positions for the maximum and minimum speeds. (13) (OR)
11.b). A horizontal steam engine runni9ng at 120 rpm has a bore of 250 mm and a stroke of 400 mm. the connecting rod is 0.6 m and
the mass of the reciprocating parts is 60 kg. when the crank has turned through an angle of 45o from the inner dead centre, the steam
pressure on the cover end side is 550 KN/m2 and that on the crank end side is 70 KN/m2 considering the diameter of the piston rod
equal to 50 mm, determine: (i) Turning moment on the crankshaft, (ii) Thrust on the bearing, and (iii) Acceleration of the flywheel,
if the power of the engine is 20KW, mass of the flywheel 60Kg and radius of gyration 0.6m (13)
12.a) A rotating shaft carries four masses A, B, C and D which are radially attached to it. The mass centres are 30 mm, 38 mm, 40
mm and 35 mm respectively from the axis of rotation. The masses A, C and D are 7.5 kg, 5 kg and 4 kg respectively. The axial
distances between the planes of rotation of A and B is 400 mm and between B and C is 500 mm. The masses A and C are at right
angles to each other. Find for a complete balance, 1. the angles between the masses B and D from mass A, 2. the axial distance
between the planes of rotation of C and D, 3. the magnitude of mass B. (16)

12.b) . A two cylinder uncoupled locomotive has inside cylinders 0.6 m apart. The radius of each crank is 300 mm and are at right
angles. The revolving mass per cylinder is 250 kg and the reciprocating mass per cylinder is 300 kg. The whole of the revolving and
two-third of the reciprocating masses are to be balanced and the balanced masses are placed, in the planes of rotation of the driving
wheels, at a radius of 0.8 m. The driving wheels are 2 m in diameter and 1.5 m apart. If the speed of the engine is 80 km. p.h. ; find
hammer blow, maximum variation in tractive effort and maximum swaying couple. (13)
13 a) A shaft 1.5 m long is supported by two short bearings and carries two wheels each of 50 kg mass. One wheel is situated at the
centre of the shaft and other at a distance of 0.4 m from the centre towards right. The shaft is hollow of external diameter 75 mm and
inner diameter 37.5 mm. The density of the shaft material is 8000 kg/m 3 . The young’s modulus for the shaft material is 200 GN/m 2
.Find the frequency of free transverse vibration. (or)
13.b) A shaft of length 1.25 m is 75 mm in diameter for the first 275 mm of length, 125 mm in diameter for the next 500 mm length,
87.5 mm in diameter for the next 375 mm length and 175 mm in diameter for the remaining 100 mm of its length. The shaft carries
two rotors at two ends. The mass moment of inertia of the first rotor is 75 kgm2 where as of the second rotor is 50 kgm2. Find the
frequency of natural torsional vibrations of the system. The modulus of rigidity of the shaft material may be taken as 80GN/m2. (13)
14 a) A machine of mass 75 kg is mounted on springs of stiffness 1200 kN/m and with an assumed damping factor of 0.2. A piston
within the machine of mass 2 kg has a reciprocating motion with a stroke of 80 mm and a speed of 3000 cycles/min. Assuming the
motion to be simple harmonic, find : 1. the amplitude of motion of the machine, 2. its phase angle with respect to the excitingforce, 3.
the force transmitted to the foundation, and 4. the phase angle of transmitted force with respect to the exciting force. (13) (or)
14 b) A machine supported symmetrically on four springs has a mass of 80 kg. The mass of the reciprocating parts is 2.2 kg which
move through a vertical stroke of 100 mm with simple harmonic motion. Neglecting damping, determine the combined stiffness of the
springs so that the force transmitted to the foundation is 1/20th of the impressed force. The machine crankshaft rotates at 800 rpm. If,
under actual working conditions, the damping reduces the amplitudes of successive vibrations by 30%, find: (i) the force transmitted
to the foundation at 800 rpm, and (ii) the force transmitted to the foundation at resonance
15 a).The length of the upper and lower arms of a porter governor are 200mm and 250mm respectively. Both the arms are pivoted on
the axis of rotation. The central load is 150N, the weight of the each ball is 20N .and the friction of the sleeve together with the
resistance of the operating gear is equivalent to a force of 30N at the sleeve. If the limiting inclinations of the upper arms to the
vertical are 30° and 40° taking friction in to account. Find the range of speed of the governor. (OR)
15 b) The driving axle of a locomotive with two wheels has a moment of inertia of 175 kg/m2.The diameter of the wheel treads is
1.7m and the distance between wheel centers is 1.5m. When the locomotive is travelling on a level track @ 88km/hr, defective
ballasting causes one wheel to fall 5mm and rise again in a total time of 0.1 sec, if the displacement of the wheel takes place with
simple harmonic motion. Find
1. Gyroscopic couple setup
2. The reaction between the wheel and rail due to this couple.
