Dear Admissions Committee,

I am writing to express my strong interest in the International Development program. As a graduate

of Sciences Po Paris, I have always been drawn to the study of social sciences and international
relations, however during my exchange year (2021-2022) at UPF, I realised I wanted to stay in
Barcelona and learn more about international development.

The interdisciplinary nature of the program and the focus on global perspectives particularly appeal
to me, as I believe that a multifaceted approach is necessary to address the complex challenges facing
the world today. I am also interested in working in international bodies and NGOs, and I believe that
this master will provide me with further tools to enter this world professionally. I am Irish and
Spanish, but Brussels born and raised, and I strongly believe my international and trilingual
background has helped me grasp the importance of intercultural cooperation and dialogue.

With the program structure at IBEI, I find it important to focus on policy relevance, and I am
impressed by the teaching model at IBEI, which combines both academic rigour and policy relevance.
Academic excellence is an important aspect for me since completing my bachelors at SciencesPo
Paris. Another aspect of the program which piqued my interest was the internship part, as I believe
theory and practice are valuable assets to a master’s program.

My interest in international development, NGO’s and social policy started ever since I volunteered as
a community manager at PeaceJam Europe, an international youth-driven NGO which organises
conferences with Nobel Peace laureates. This experience enabled me to explore the facets and
functions of an international NGO. An experience like this, made me excited to start the human rights
course elective offered with this program, in order to combine both the theoretical and the practical.

To continue, I also interned at European Schoolnet, a European NGO which works closely with the
European Commission to innovate education in Europe. These two experiences confirmed my desire
to refine my knowledge of public policy and education. However, I would benefit greatly from taking
a course such as the “Public Policy Evaluation” class in order to have an enhanced vision of the world
of organising and decision making.

On a more practical note, that directly impacts a targeted field, I have frequently helped at refugee
centers in Brussels, which gave me insight on the devastating effects geopolitics can have on
migration, and the ways in which different countries address these issues. This is also why I am
excited to take electives such as international migrations and civil wars.

I feel like my previous professional and volunteer experiences only made my interest in politics and
international development grow, and they would complement nicely with the courses offered at this
program. Moreover, I am trilingual and possess excellent communication and interpersonal skills,
which I believe will enable me to effectively collaborate with fellow students and contribute to class
discussions and group work.
To conclude my motivation letter, I believe that this master’s program will equip me with the tools to
launch a career in international organisations and NGOs. By combing my previous experiences, and
this specific course, I believe I could greatly benefit from a program that encourages group work and
research with students from all over the world. I am also confident in my ability to excel in this
program thanks to my previous work and volunteer experiences in NGOs and international
institutions.

Thank you for considering my application,

Clara Bracken
