API 510 WORKBOOK

Opening statement

Welcome to the CKRC Training computer-based distance learning course. This course is designed with one
primary objective: maximizing your potential to pass the API 510 ICP Inspector’s examination.

Although this course is based on the API 510 BOK approved for your upcoming examination, it must be
brought to your attention that this course is not intended to be an exhaustive study of the API approved
Body of Knowledge (BOK) or related reference material but rather focuses on the area’s most commonly
targeted within the API ICP examination.

The API examination will be hosted at the nominated Prometric Testing Site and will be presented in two
parts within a 6.5 hours’ session on the day approved / booked with Prometric after you ICP approval is
obtained. The exam day will include a short tutorial session, 2 hours for the closed-book section, a 1-hour
lunch break, and 3 hours for the open-book section.
The open-book examination will generally test your Code understanding and usage skills.
The closed-book examination will test your general API related knowledge and closed book recall.
The API examination will contain 150 multiple choice questions. The open-book examination consists of ≈
50 questions and the closed-book section consists of ≈ 100 questions.
Notes:
 The number of questions may vary in the open and closed book sections but will add up to 150
questions in total.
 Only 125 of the total questions are scored by API (Refer to API document contained with Annex 5
for further details).
 The extent of the examination is constrained by the approved API ICP BOK.

This courseware is designed to be read in conjunction with the applicable API / ASME Code sections
identified by the approved API ICP BOK. The course is structured to address the two areas which must be
mastered to assure that you will do well in the examination, general knowledge (Closed book recall) and
specific Code usage skills (Open book research and application).

The modules contained within the first half of the course consist of a reading assignment (RA) and quiz,
the aim of these modules is to create a sound general knowledge foundation which is reinforced and
developed in the latter half of the course with modules which include specific RA’s, guidance notes,
instructions, examples, and a Quiz, as appropriate, the modules within the latter half of the course deal
with the specific BOK inspector’s abilities related to code research and application.

The specific Code usage skills needed for the open book portion of the examination focuses mainly on
your ability to perform calculations and locate and apply information that you would not be expected to
remember as general knowledge. The closed book portion of the examination will test your familiarity and
ability to remember and correctly apply the general API/ASME requirements, some basic calculations, and
the recall of one or two of the major tables within the API Standard may be expected. It is very important
to note that your general knowledge will carry the most weight in the API examination, ≈ 100 marks, this
balance should be reflected in your preparations. In short, there is only one sure way of acquiring
sufficient general knowledge to do well in the final exam: Read, Read, and Read again.

My own experience in delivering this course and in taking the API ICP examinations has shown that
examination candidates generally pass because the examination was approached with the correct amount
of respect and the main ingredients required in successful study was observed, discipline and a genuine
desire to understand.

OVERVIEW

Course format: Computer-based distance learning via the CKRC Training eLearning hub.

Course structure:
Phase 1: Computer-based distance learning via the CKRC Training eLearning hub.
This part of the course is module based, each module covering specific objective(s)
linked to the API ICP BOK.

Modules are accessed via the CKRC Training eLearning hub.

Modules are available in PDF format.

The PDF module contains the Reading Assignment and Test (The test will have
the same questions that will be found within the online quiz, however the
order of the responses may differ).
The RA, any course notes and examples provided should be thoroughly
completed prior to attempting the test.
(The RA may need to be read through several times depending on your
familiarity with the material). NB: It is highly discouraged that the test
questions be reviewed prior to attempting the RA.
The test should be printed and attempted in open book format prior to
attempting the online quiz, NB. All references and calculations should be
recorded for comparison with the references provided after submission of the
online quiz. This comparison step may be essential in later discussions of any
problem areas that the student requires further clarification or assistance.

Each module (Except where specifically stated in the modules introduction) will require
the completion of an online quiz (Open book format)
Each quiz has a recommended passing mark of 95% to signify module
completion.
The score and references for all correct answers will be available once the quiz
is submitted.
If a score of less than 95% is obtained it is recommended that the student
should repeat the questions that were marked as incorrect.
There is no limit to the number of attempts within the quiz section.
If a score of ≥95% cannot be obtained and / or there is disagreement with any
of the proposed answers, references or calculations provided, the student
should submit a request for assistance / clarification to the course instructor.

NB. It is essential that test / quizzes be attempted by each individual and collaboration with other
students or outside parties on tests and quizzes is highly discouraged and may tend to defeat the intent of
the preparation course and will only become evident in the final score of the API ICP Examination.

NB: The pace of this course is demanding and requires discipline to avoid creating a backlog that may
negatively impact the quality of your preparations. On average, you will need to commit 140 hours
towards your preparations (Approx. 2.7 hours per day, this includes the total time to adequately complete
the Modules, including quizzes) ahead of the onsite classroom session to have achieved the
recommended foundation.

Phase 2: Onsite classroom training. (Corporate clients only)

This part of the course is classroom-based learning and will cover the key areas related
to Code understanding and application (Calculations and research). Common problem

areas identified through phase 1 will also be addressed during this phase. Note this
phase may be executed after or in parallel to the release of the final tests in phase 3.
Onsite dates are subject to various scheduling constraints. Refer to the schedule for
additional detail related to these dates.

Phase 3: Mock Examinations via the CKRC Training eLearning hub and final student revision (API
ICP Examination).
4 Open Book tests.
4 Closed Book tests.
1 attempt will be allowed per test and an overall passing mark of ≥80% will be
required to signify successful course completion.
The test will be taken on the CKRC Training eLearning hub.

Course schedule:

The course schedule is available via the IT&C training hub and student calendar (Refer to Annex 1
Course schedule).

Course schedule notes:

Phase 1
Modules will be released on the CKRC Training eLearning hub per the course schedule,
each module quiz will be available from the date of module release, it is recommended
that all quizzes must be completed with a successful pass mark prior to phase 2.

Phase 2
Completion of phase 1 is highly recommended prior to the 5-day classroom training
(Corporate clients only)

Phase 3
Where requested by student’s mock examinations may be subject to joint review to
discuss final areas of concern for additional focus by the student ahead of the ICP
examination.

API ICP Examination structure

To maximize our efforts, we need to have an understanding of how the ICP examination is structured.

Questions use the multiple-choice answer formats with 4 possible answers / responses. In general, two of
the answers will be clearly incorrect, and of the two remaining options one will be almost / nearly correct
and the other will be clearly correct / more correct.

Tip: Read all questions thoroughly, identifying all key words, key information, and the context of the
question. Review all available responses, read the question again to ensure that you understand the
context of the question. In addition to identifying the correct response, attempt to identify / eliminate the
options that are incorrect, less correct or less complete. Using this approach, you should be able to
eliminate at least 1 ~ 2 of the options which will greatly improve your chances of selecting the correct
response.

In general, the API ICP examination will ask at least 1 question from all sections of the approved BOK.
Note: All questions must be sourced by API ICP from areas identified in the BOK and publications
effectivity sheet.

Open book questions target a selection of calculations and information that is contained in the BOK that
you are not required / expected to memorize.

Closed book questions cover all information that you are expected to be able to remember.

The test is generally (≈) structured in the following way (Mark breakdown of the 125 scored questions)
Scope & General Application of API 510 4 questions
Damage Mechanisms 13 questions
Repairs 12 questions
NDE 12 questions
Welding 10 questions
Design 10 questions
Planning 14 questions
Inspection & Testing Practices 15 questions
Pressure Relief Devices 8 questions
Data Evaluation 19 questions
Roles & Responsibilities 8 questions

The majority of the Code calculation questions are restricted to the open book section which is limited to
≈ 50 questions.

The API ICP exam contains 150 question which include 25 pre-test questions within the exam that will not
be counted towards the final mark.

Refer to annex 5, 6, 7 & 8 for additional information.
