Lesson: Earthquakes and Faults

Learning Competency: Using models or illustrations, explain how movements along faults generate earthquakes
(S8ES-IIa- 14)

4 Pics 1 word. Directions: Guess the word in each item by using the pictures and hints.

Activity: C _ _ _ KSet-up
A Fault-y _R_AK M__E
Materials Needed : Fine sand, newspaper, 2 Sheets of Paper and ruler.
PROCEDURE
1. Put and spread the newspaper on the table 2. Arrange the two sheets of paper edge to edge.

3. Put sand along the boundary of 2 sheets of paper. 4. Move the two sheets in an opposite direction. Slow
Using a ruler, flatten the top of the sand and make two move one sheet to the left and the other to the right.
parallel lines.

Guide Questions:

1. What happened to the sand as you move the two sheets of paper in opposite directions?

An earthquake is the shaking movement of the ground caused by a sudden shift or slip
on a fault. A fault is a break in the rocks that make up the earth’s crust. The tectonic plates are
always moving but they stuck at their edges due to friction. When the stress on the edge of the
tectonic plates overcomes the friction, there is an earthquake that releases energy in waves that
travel through the earth's crust and cause the shaking that you feel.

How about the boundary between the two sheets. What does it represent? ____________________________
2. Suppose that the two lines that you made in the sand represents a road. What happens tow the road when the fault
below it suddenly moves?
