An invention is an output, be it a process or device, that could be used on a

particular activity. Every creation is important, regardless of how significant it may be

viewed by someone, but it can’t be denied that there are those that have undeniably

contributed a huge factor to making our lives easier.

I am talking about the water and electricity system.

From our previous modules, we have been taught about the various inventions

that truly made a mark through time --- starting from our form of writing (cuneiform script

and hieroglyphics), transportation (wheeled vehicle, sailboat, and chariot), equipment

(pots and stone tools), religion (sculptures like the Harrapan Face, Sphinx-lion, and

Master of Animals) up to the modern era of technology (computer). However, the water

and electricity system are, at least for me, is on a different level.

On a daily basis, the two mentioned products are a necessity to get us by.

Individually, water hydrates our bodies. Additionally, this is also used for cooking food,

washing off bacteria, and watering plants. On the other hand, electricity is the main source

of “power” pertaining to the operation of electronics (for students who are studying or

employees who are working), appliances (radio, refrigerator, television, and air condition

units), and machinery (those that are used in factories and other companies).

These two, as they work hand-in-hand, create a big impact on society because

they basically make people’s lives more convenient. They let us focus on other things by

eliminating the concerns that we could have been problematic about (e.g “what will I use

for communicating?” or “how will I be able to cook/clean this?”)

Moreover, I would also like to acknowledge the other inventions that helped and

continuously help us up to this day; let’s have “Architecture” and “Engineering” to begin

with.

As stated from the lecture, the building of “Ziggurats” & “Pyramids” and the creation

of “Seed Plow” & “Water Clock” could be one of the best examples there are because

these started the wonders of invention and innovation.

Ancient structures, later on, turned into human shelters and then commercial

buildings, and manual devices, later on, turned to hands-free technology. These are the

main reason as to why we could have roofs above our heads without enslaving anyone

(as history did), and why agriculture and farming are more productive and cost-efficient.

Furthermore, we also have “Robotics” or more commonly labeled as “Technology”

in layman’s terms. This is proven to improve work practices more efficiently because it

increases the productivity of workers. For example, the usage of bricklaying machines in

construction or the robotic surgical system in hospitals.

See, inventions are not just some mere objects that we create, sell, and then use; these

are products of great minds --- critically and crucially planned out to improve people’s way

of living. So it does not matter which has the greatest impact on many, because what

matters the most is: it was able to help at least one person during his lifetime.
