Khan to travel through his
empire and survey the people
and their traditions, the flora
and fauna, and the geography
of the land.

evident between Europe and
Asia.
 Asian products such as spices,
silk , and precious stones and
minerals like gold, diamonds,
and rubies became popular in
Europe, so as salt.

Industrialization
 Process by which an economy is
transformed from primarily
agricultural to one based on the
manufacturing of goods.
 Individual manual labor is often
replaced by mechanized mass
production, and craftsmen are
replaced by assembly lines.
 Includes economic growth, more
efficient division of labor, and the
use of technological innovation.
Capitalism
 An economic and political system in
which a country's trade and
industry are controlled by private
owners for profit, rather than by
the state.
 It was important for the
Westerners to maintain their
colonies in Asia since it was
considered as an important source
of profit and resources.
White Man’s
Burden
 British novelist and poet Rudyard
Kipling wrote a poem entitled
“The White Man’s Burden: The
United States and The Philippine
Islands.”
 In this poem, Kipling urged the
U.S. to take up the “burden” of
empire, as had Britain and other
European nations.
