A machine vise is a mechanical device used in manufacturing, machining, and other

industrial processes to securely hold a workpiece in place during machining, cutting, or
shaping operations. It is typically used in conjunction with a milling machine, drilling
machine, or other machining tools.
A machine vise typically consists of two parallel jaws that are designed to clamp and hold a
workpiece firmly in place. The jaws are usually operated by a threaded screw mechanism,
which allows for precise control over the clamping force applied to the workpiece. The jaws
can be opened or closed by turning the handle of the screw, allowing the workpiece to be
easily inserted, positioned, and secured in the vise.
Machine vises come in various sizes, styles, and configurations, depending on the specific
application and the size of the workpiece. Some common types of machine vises include:
1. Milling machine vise: Used in milling operations to hold a workpiece securely in
place during cutting, shaping, or drilling operations. Milling machine vises are
typically designed to provide precise control over the clamping force and allow for
accurate positioning of the workpiece.
2. Drill press vise: Used in drilling operations to hold a workpiece securely while
drilling holes. Drill press vises are typically smaller and simpler in design compared
to milling machine vises, but still provide adequate clamping force for drilling
operations.
3. Bench vise: Used in general workshop applications for holding workpieces during
various machining, cutting, or shaping operations. Bench vises are usually larger and
heavier, and can be mounted on a workbench or a similar stable surface.
Machine vises are important tools in machining and manufacturing processes, as they provide
stability, precision, and safety by securely holding workpieces in place during operations.
Proper use and maintenance of machine vises are crucial to ensure safe and efficient
machining operations. It's important to follow manufacturer's guidelines and recommended
practices when using machine vises to ensure optimal performance and avoid potential
hazards.

fixture design in central drill

Fixture design for central drilling refers to the creation of a specialized device or tool, called
a fixture, that is used to hold and position workpieces during central drilling operations.
Central drilling is a machining process that involves drilling a hole at the center of a
workpiece, often used for precision alignment or as a starting point for other machining
operations.
Designing an effective fixture for central drilling involves several considerations to ensure
accurate and efficient drilling operations. Here are some key steps to consider in fixture
design for central drilling: iv
1. Workpiece requirements: Analyze the dimensions, shape, and material properties of
the workpiece that needs to be drilled. Consider the size, weight, and stability of the
workpiece, as well as any specific requirements for hole location, size, and
orientation.
2. Fixture type: Select the appropriate type of fixture for central drilling based on the
workpiece requirements. Common types of fixtures used for central drilling include
V-block fixtures, jig fixtures, and index fixtures, among others. The type of fixture
will depend on factors such as the complexity of the workpiece, the desired hole
location, and the precision required.
3. Clamping and positioning: Determine the clamping and positioning mechanism for
the fixture. The fixture should securely hold the workpiece in place during drilling
operations, preventing any movement or vibration that may affect the accuracy of the
hole. Consider factors such as clamping force, stability, and ease of setup and
adjustment.
4. Hole location and orientation: Ensure precise positioning of the hole in relation to the
workpiece. This may involve the use of alignment pins, location holes, or other
positioning features in the fixture. Consider the required hole depth, diameter, and
angle, and ensure that the fixture allows for accurate drilling according to the desired
specifications.
5. Material selection and durability: Choose appropriate materials for the fixture that can
withstand the forces and stresses generated during drilling operations. Consider
factors such as material strength, wear resistance, and durability to ensure a long-
lasting and reliable fixture.
6. Safety considerations: Ensure that the fixture design incorporates safety features to
protect the operator and the workpiece during drilling operations. This may include
guards, shields, or other safety mechanisms to prevent accidents or damage to the
workpiece.
7. Manufacturing considerations: Consider the manufacturability of the fixture design,
including the fabrication process, available materials, and costs. Optimize the design
for ease of manufacturing, assembly, and maintenance.
8. Testing and validation: Once the fixture is designed, it's important to test and validate
its performance to ensure that it meets the desired requirements. This may involve
prototype testing, measurement, and verification of hole location, orientation, and
other specifications.
Effective fixture design for central drilling can greatly improve the accuracy, efficiency, and
safety of the machining process. It's important to carefully consider the workpiece
requirements, fixture type, clamping and positioning mechanism, hole location, material
selection, safety considerations, manufacturing feasibility, and validation to ensure a
successful fixture design for central drilling operations.

Problem statement

The fixture used to drill the holes in the workpiecev is not very feasible to drill the holes in
the required position. Fixture setup is done manually due to this cycle time being more.
Product quality is not obtained as per specification.
Objectives

 To design the fixture for the drill machine.

 To reduce the cycle time for the process.

 To analyze all the parts of the fixture.
