EXPERIMENT 2: MEASURING GRAVITITIONAL ACCELERATION

OBJECTIVE
1. To investigate the functional relationship between height of fall and falling time.
2. To determine the acceleration due to the gravity, g by studying the motion of a freely falling
body.

APPARATUS
1. 1 meter ruler
2. Ping pong ball
3. Digital timer

PROCEDURE
1. The ping pong ball was adjusted on 100m with the ruler standing on the floor.
2. The ping pong was dropped and timer was taken before it reached the floor.
3. Step 1 and 2 was repeated using different height.
4. All data was recorded in a suitable table.

ANALYSIS
1. From the data, plot graph for:
a. Height of fall as a function of falling time,
b. Height of fall as a function of the square falling time, and
2. Using the height of fall as a function of the square of falling time graph, determine the
gradient (slope) of the graph and calculate the value g.

(0.012,0.60) (0.104,0.96)

𝑦2−𝑦1
m=𝑥2−𝑥1

0.96−0.60
=0.104−0.012

=3.91 ms-1

Value of g:
1
h(t) = 2gt2

1
m=2 𝑔

g=2m
=2× 3.91ms-2
=7.82 ms-2

3. Calculate value of uncertainties of g (∆g).

0.63−0.99
Max gradient = = 3.40
0.014−0.120

0.59−1.04
Min gradients = = 4.50
0.016−0.116

1
∆𝑚= (3.40-4.50)
2

∆m=-0.55

Therefore, gradient m = (3.91 ± 0.55) 𝑚𝑠 −2

4. Calculate the percent difference between the value of g calculated in part (1) above
(gexperiment) and the standard value of gstandard = 9.81m/s2 . What is the percent error in this
experimental value?

𝑔−𝑔1
Percent error = 𝑔
× 100%

9.81−3.91
Percent error = 9.81
×100%

=60.14%
5. Is there any experimental errors? Discuss.

-Experimental error in the experiment is when we recorded the time using the phone. It is
little bit hard to recorded to time falling using a phone compare to using a stopwatch.

CONCLUSION
1. The functional relationship between fall height and fall time was that the higher the
fall height, the longer the fall time.
2. A freely falling body's motion was observed to reveal the acceleration caused by
gravity, g, which was 9.8 ms-2
