In order to distinguish the unique nature of its program, rather than use the more generally accepted
referent Early Childhood Care and Education (ECCE), Living Language Institute Foundation (LLIF) uses
the term LLIF ECE to describe its early childhood education program.

Early Learning Program Mission and Goal

Mission
Living Language Institute Foundation (LLIF) strives through its Early Childhood
Education to provide quality learning opportunities, programs and workshops in early
childhood education that develop competencies and skills appropriate to the wide variety
of pedagogical settings experienced by both pre-service and in-service practitioners.

Goal
The goal of LLIF Early Childhood Education is to serve all children including those who
may be multi-lingual and/or multi-abled. In order to reach this goal we provide pre-
service, in-service, and on-going programs for teachers, family members, and other child-
focused caregivers to support their developing the skills necessary to respond to the needs
of the children in their care.

As a program that meets the required standards for training early learning professionals
within the province of British Columbia, LLIF Early Childhood Education will equip
early childhood professionals with the skills and training necessary to deliver a high
quality, developmentally appropriate program. To this end we believe that knowledge
and understanding of early childhood education and care is best achieved through
participating in a supportive learning community that is closely linked to operational
daycare and preschool settings.

We have designed LLIF Early Childhood Education as an apprenticeship program. In this

model theoretical understandings are contextualized within mentored practice throughout
the entire program. From the outset students are carefully mentored in acquiring and
applying the ‘art of observing’ both as a methodology and a vehicle for learning.

· Develop and enhance your intellectual and practical skills required for working as
a professional in the field of early years education and care;

· Prepare you to engage with further study, enquiry and practice in settings where a
knowledge of early years education and care is required;

there is need for further training and skill development.

Learning outcomes
Knowledge and understanding

The course of studies will provide you with relevant knowledge that in turn will support
the understanding of

· How young children learn and develop within the various contexts in which
learning occurs;

· The principles governing policy and practice in the education and care of young
children;

· Current and emerging theories and research that support good practice in the
education of young children;

· Curriculum frameworks that include both teaching and learning practices as well
as the observation and assessment of young children’s learning;

· The impact of ethnicity, religion, caste/class, gender, sexuality and disability on

children and their development;

· The implications of differences, inequality, and exclusion along with knowledge

of strategies for addressing these issues;

· How policies and regulations promote children’s status, welfare, and learning in
home, school, and other contexts;

· Solve problems in ways appropriate to your employment role.

· Identify the areas in which you are particularly gifted and can perform tasks
easily, but also identify the areas where your aptitudes, skills and competencies
are less developed and need further attention.

Teaching, Learning and Assessment Methods

We believe that in our Living Language Early Childhood Education your knowledge and
understanding of early childhood education and care will be best developed through
participating in a supportive learning community that is closely linked to operational
daycare and preschool settings. From the outset and throughout the entire program, the
pacing and delivery of course content is designed to provide you with opportunities to
contextualize theoretical knowledge either by observing and/or engaging directly with
children.

Through on-going reflective conversations as well as fulfilling course assignments you

will gain the skills necessary to express your knowledge. Your assignments and work-
related projects will be structured to evoke independent thinking, different approaches to
problem solving. They will help you interpret theories in the light of basic principles of
appropriate care and education of young children.

You will be introduced to ‘Observing for Learning’ as an assessment method. In turn,

your mentors will also practice what they are teach as they teach.

Is this Program for You?

The primary attitude expected of all seeking entry into LLIF Early Learning Program is
that they ‘love little children’. This profession offers unique opportunities to foster the
healthy growth of young hearts and minds, to open up their learning potential, and in so
doing to make rich contributions to families and society at large. At the same time, on
the part of those involved, the loving care of children makes great demands of time,
energy, and money. For this reason, committing oneself to pursue a career in early
childhood education requires careful discernment.

With these considerations in mind, therefore, before signing enrollment agreements,

prospective students are expected to communicate openly with LLIF Early Learning
Program personnel for the purpose of:

· Discussing educational and occupational plans and aspirations;

· Arranging periods of observation in a variety of early learning settings;

· Arranging to volunteer for a minimum of 40 hours in approved early learning

settings and/or to receive approval for equivalent prior experience.

In the case of those whose oral English competencies are deemed inadequate for
functioning effectively in either the Living Language Early Childhood Education or as a
volunteer, certain potential students may be required to take a 30-hour course in Singing
English or an approved alternative.

Prior to formal entry into the program LLIF encourages, in addition, that all students
engage in an additional 40 hour work-experience at Creative Minds Child Care. The
specific purpose of this requirement is to determine whether the collaborative nature of
the apprenticeship model of the Living Language Early Childhood Education is well
suited to the particular needs and aptitudes of each enrollee.

topics of early childhood education and written skills should mirror the student’s ability
in oral language.

Student Conduct
All students are expected to be fully acquainted with and abide by the ECEBC Code of
Ethics. During the interview prior to enrollment each student will be given a copy of the
code. Students are expected to read the code prior to being admitted into the LLIF Early
Learning Program.

Students are expected to exhibit a professional demeanor throughout the program. This
includes:

Appropriate dress

Bare feet or thongs are prohibited by insurance regulations. Early childhood educators
spend much time sitting on the floor with knees crossed and/or bending over low tables
or beside the chairs while attending little children. Avoid wearing clothing that is
revealing or exhibits inappropriate graffiti or insignia.

Respectful demeanor

You are expected to follow the protocol of respectful social behavior at all times during
classes. Avoid all private conversations during class whether with others in class or on
the cell phone. Such conversations disrupt the learning of others. Cell phones must be
turned off during class so that learning will not be interrupted.

Preparation

You will be provided with an outline for each course. This will include a reading
schedule, a schedule of assignments and a list of the required materials. As the LLIF
Early Learning Program is highly collaborative, you are expected fulfill your share of all
class assignments adequately. A lack of care in this regard affects not only your own
learning but also the learning of the others in your team.

Confidentiality

You are expected to apply the ECEBC Code of Ethics regarding all conversations in the
classroom as well as at the early childhood sites of observation and practice.

Code of Conduct

While on LLIF premises or in the course of activities or events hosted by LLIF, students:
· must comply with all applicable LLIF policies, including the Attendance Policy;
· must treat all students and staff with respect and must not engage in physically
aggressive, threatening, harassing, discriminatory or otherwise offensive behaviour;
· must not steal, misuse, destroy or deface LLIF property;
· must not consume, possess or distribute alcohol or controlled or restricted
substances; and

19

· must not contravene any provision of the Canadian Criminal Code or any other
federal, provincial, or municipal statute or regulation.

The above list sets out examples of prohibited conduct. It is intended to help students
understand the type of conduct that will be subject to discipline and is not exhaustive.
Students who violate the Code of Conduct will be subject to the procedures and discipline
outlined below, which may include immediate dismissal from the institution.

Misconduct and Dismissal

The following behaviors are considered reasons for dismissal from the program as they
show a lack of commitment and serious intent:

• Showing deliberate inattention during class; not completing assignments or

submitting assignments in an unacceptable form; continual absence form classes; not
assuming shared responsibly in collaborative work.

• Deliberately distracting the learning of others.

• Showing a marked inability to interact respectfully and with consideration of others:

the faculty, peers, the children and/or their families.

• Violating the ethical standards as outlined in the ECEBE Code of Ethics.

Smoking, alcohol, and heavily scented cosmetics are not permitted in the classroom,
or on the grounds of any child care setting associated with LLIF.
