Welcome to the Masters in Early Childhood Education (MECHE).

This learning kit is one in a series of learning kits that form the basis of the MECHE
programme. This learning kit will be your guide and companion on your learning
adventure in the MECHE programme. This is your journey to becoming a better teacher
and administrator in early childhood education. Congratulations for being here.

In the MECHE journey, we will be exploring a wide range of foundational theories and
methods, gaining essential knowledge and practicing important skills in education
specifically in early childhood education.

You will be building your own understanding of this knowledge, structuring your own
critique of them, evaluating their worth and possibly even improving early childhood
education in the process.

MECHE will help you cultivate good values and build your arsenal of best practices.

In MECHE, you will research, reflect and learn. You sharpen your ability to make
intelligent and informed decisions.

Most importantly, you will be learning how to do the job of teaching young minds better.

In MECHE, you will be learning to be a force for change for the better.

We wish you all the best.

INTRODUCTION

Today, there is an enormous amount of empirical research on how young children develop,
think and learn. New research in developmental neuroscience has discovered powerful
learning occurs in all domains of development from the earliest months of life. In this
course, we focus on key areas of consensus in the wider field, while highlighting current
controversies (for example, research in mathematics learning). We will explore how as
teachers we can encourage and support children thinking , socializing and active
participation to achieve optimum learning and development.

This course provides a critical examination on the essential in the learning and development
of a young child. How as teachers we can guide and plan environment and activities that
are responsive , developmentally appropriate , and bring out the natural curiosity that a
child needs to achieve optimum learning and development.

The course content is organised into three sections:

(i) Development and learning;

(ii) Leadership and management; and

(iii) Establishing effective relationships.

In examining the influence of policy on practice, issues covered in our readings and
discussions include the stages of child development, observing young children, making
partnerships with parents, building relationships within and between teams, working in a
multi-agency way and creating a caring and stimulating environment. To illustrate practice
and stimulate reflections, our reading materials include case studies, group tasks, dialogues,
and recommendations of useful websites and journals for further reading.
