Preparation of various project method statements in accordance with the project Technical
specifications, Standards and Safety Requirements.
Estimation of the Marine project quantities in order to manage to establish a detailed
planning program with the planning department.
Preparation and study all Technical Submissions and procedures.
Responsible to follow up on all the geotechnical investigation and soil improvement studies.
Responsible for preparation of subcontractor RFQ (Request for Quotation) packages and
participate in the tendering phase technically.
Measurements of Preliminary and Final quantities for the Marine activities and preparation
of the monthly interim payment applications.
Responsible for all engineering studies concerning the marine activities.
Carryout and reviewing all required structural design verifications.
Managing a team of draftsman to complete the Marine shop drawings.

Verifying and approving the subcontractor payment applications.
Monitoring changes on the design and negotiating with the client to obtain approvals for
any design changes by following all the project VO and responsible for any conflict
resolution in case of any.
1.8.1 As I joined this project at a very early stage I was lucky to be involved on different
disciplines and activities. The first task that was handled to me when I first joined was
to study all the material and subcontractors quotations and make necessary
comparison technically and commercially.
1.8.2 I carried out estimations of all the marine quantities based on the tender drawings to
compare it with the contract BOQ quantities and report the differences to the planning
department to assign the exact quantities in order to estimate the accurate required
recourses during the construction stage.
I have used my skills in AutoCAD and Excel software to calculate the Marine quantities
form the Tender drawings, and using the Primavera P6 software to assign the
resources to the schedule program.
1.8.3 I have prepared the Marine Method statements for construction of the marine
structures within the project scope with the support of the site team, QA/QC

department and HSE Department. The method were prepared in a way to facilitate
the construction by utilizing the company resources from equipment.
Moreover, I have prepared the job safety analysis and risk assessment based on the
agreed methodology, identifying the job hazards and assigning the necessary
precautions to control all the expected hazards. My main aim while preparing the
method statement was to follow the relevant contract specifications and KOC
standards to reach the highest quality of work.
1.8.4 At the start of the physical construction works at site I was responsible for the offshore
geotechnical investigations studies with the responsible subcontractor, preparing the
method statement then obtain approval on the boreholes location based on the
designed structures requirements, and follow up with the works on site until we had
received the geotechnical final report.
After receiving the report, I reviewed it and made the technical comparison between
the SPT values mentioned on the executed report and the pre-geotechnical
investigation report received during the tender stage in order to report to the designer
in case of any discrepancy found to check the bearing capacity under the designed
structures to ensure its stability prior to proceed with the construction works.
Moreover, I carried out a study on the subsurface profile shown on the report in order
to make preliminary estimation on the dredged material quantity which allowed me to
determine the fine material percentage of the total dredged material. This material will
be used for the reclamation area. To decide the suitability of the material in
accordance with project specifications to decide the right methodology for the soil
improvement in the reclamation area as well as the material used in the reclamation
area shall be max contains of 11% of fine material.
1.8.5 I followed up with the survey third party company which conducted the onshore and
offshore survey works. I prepared the method statement explaining using of the Side
scan sonar multi beam to complete the bathymetric works, and completing the
geophysical survey; side scan sonar to discover all scraps metal on the sea bed
surface and magnetometer for the subsurface profile to discover any of unexploded
ordinances to report it to HSE team.
1.8.6 One of the challenges I faced during the trench dredging for the quay wall base which
is conducted by using the company backhoe dredger, is that I realized that the over
dredging was extremely more than the accepted tolerance which generated more cost
and delay on the project flow. Therefore, after investigating, I managed to find a
solution: a backhoe dredging monitoring system which shall be installed to the
backhoe dredger to give a real time dredge monitoring system and to be able to
manage large amounts of real time dredging data effortlessly.
The dredging progress have been improved after installation of the system and we
managed to overcome the over dredging problem.
1.8.7 I have implemented the BIM technology in the project by using the Autodesk Civil 3D
software to make the dredging surface in 3D and make necessary modifications in

case of any discrepancies with the design. This allowed me to calculate dredging,
reclamation and breakwater quantities for the monthly progress, automatically by
either 3d surface volume or by generating sections.
1.8.8 I was responsible of preparation and submission of the marine shop drawings by
leading a team of CAD operators. I have transferred all my experiences to them and
improved their skills by teaching them several software to facilitate their job such as
Sketch up and civil 3D software. 70% of the shop drawings have been approved until
date.
1.8.9 I have carried out studies of the Floating Pontoon systems and make comparison
between the received proposals from different companies from all over the world. The
management have chosen the Pontoon manufacturer based on my technical report
and recommendations.
After approval of the supplier, I was responsible of preparation of the floating pontoon
system with the supplier. We carried out the design of the piles system structurally

considering a sacrificial thickness for the corrosion rate to ensure the stability of the
system for 50 years.
Piles Design
After I reviewed and confirmed the pontoons system design; frame and floaters, one
of the challenges we faced was that the tilting angle of the pontoons in some sections
was not complying with the contract specifications which required max tilting angle
7.5⁰. However, based on the required pontoon width and the calculation based on the

AS3962-2001 Australian standards for design Marinas, the angle exceeded the limit
and we had to convince the client with our design or we will have to change the
pontoon width subject to variation order. They accepted our proposal with the existing
tilting angle.
1.8.10 I have carried out all of the coordination studies on the contract drawings and was
responsible to submit RFI (Request for Information) to the client superintendent in
case of any discrepancy or missing information on the design.
One of the RFI I submitted to the client for an example was about intersection
between the sheet pile’s anchor piles required for the ship lifting area and the
berthing quay wall

Page
BY AHMED SAMIR BASSIOUNI 01-March16 12 of 26
The client accepted my proposal to extend the main sheet pile to work as an anchor
pile in order to avoid the clash with the quay wall.
Another RFI I submitted was related to the central pier at North Habrour, after
implementing the BIM on the project I found that the precast pile cap formwork blocks
and precast slabs do not form a close formwork to complete the cast in situ concrete
between the precast slabs and finishing concrete, in order to solve the problem as per
the design concept intended, I proposed that the wall heights of these blocks should
be increased as shown on below illustrations. The proposal was accepted by the client
superintendent.
1.9 Summary
I started this project during the mobilization stage which was an additional experience in my
career. The project gave me a huge chance to gain a lot of experience and information about the
marine construction which I believe will help me to have more opportunities in my career in the
future. Moreover, practicing my written and oral communication skills in a very technical
environment helped me to facilitate and convince all the stakeholders, in addition to working with
the latest standards and procedures as I was a part of a big organization serving KOC (KUWAIT OIL
COMPANY), one of the biggest clients on the oil and gas sector in the Middle East.
The project still ongoing. The progress of the project is around 60% until date.

2.6.1 I started working on the project since 05th April 2012, the project was on going as
contract was signed on October 2009, I was appointed on this project as a civil
engineer in the technical office to complete some certain tasks which I already have
similar experience from my previous project in Saudi Arabia.
As a Civil Engineer my duties and responsibilities were including but not limited to the
following:
Preliminary and final measurements for Earthworks, Paving material and all concrete works
for Monthly interim payment.
Geotechnical studies and material approvals.
Site measurements and estimation of quantities for the planning Engineer.
Preparation of structural and geometric design requirements for the project as required.
Supervising a team of CAD operators to complete the project shop drawings.
Follow up daily and weekly reports with site engineers.
Managing budget and project resources and reporting to top management.
2.8.1 I started that role while the project was ongoing. Therefore, I directly started
completing all the required submissions form the technical department to support the
site team to complete their work on site. The first task was giving to me is to complete
the design of the remaining pipe and box culverts in the project, First get the hydrology
data then design it geometrically and finally complete the structure design in the same
manner I used to do it in Saudi Arabia and as will be explained on career episode 3.
2.8.2 One of the problems I faced during that project was a cemetery area located just
beside our road alignment and in order to complete our section we would need to
make excavation on the cemetery which was rejected by the local people there.
Therefore, I suggested to make a retaining wall between the cemetery area and the
highway along the intersected area to avoid any conflict with the locals which may
stop the work.
Accordingly I start designing the retaining wall geometrically by using Autodesk Civil
3D software after collecting the required survey data for the mentioned location to
identify the final required height of the wall which was various due to the longitudinal
slope of the highway, the total length of the wall was over 150 m long and the max
height reached 7.0 m Height. After obtaining approval on the retaining wall profile and
layout I proceeded with the structural design (by using SAP design Software) of the
retaining wall in accordance with the AASHTO and BS standards. The wall was
successfully approved and constructed and problem was solved.

2.8.3 In another section of the highway we faced a similar problem, In order to complete the
road section we need to make a backfill for more than 5.0 m heights and there was a
water channel passing beside that section which will be blocked by the back fill
material. Therefore, I suggested to make another retaining wall to avoid blocking the
water channel. The wall was designed by me geometrically and structurally in the
same manner as explained on the previous clause.
2.8.4 I have designed a concrete water channel as instructed by the client superintendent,
the concrete water channel was required to replace a natural channel which will be
affected because of our construction in that area, and the channel purpose was to
provide local people with required water for the agriculture work on that area. I have
carried out the design of the channel by using Autodesk Civil 3d software to design
the final profile with the most suitable slope for the entire length of the channel. I
carried out the cost estimation of the channel based on my design and submitted for
approval by the client prior to start the construction.
2.8.5 I was responsible to complete all of the project shop drawings with the support of a
team of CAD operators, Curb stones, slope Protections, culverts, bridges, 2 tunnels
and drainage pipe lines network was under my direct supervision and carrying out all
necessary communications and discussions with the client superintendent to obtain
the required approvals.
2.8.6 I was responsible to collect all the site information form site team to complete the daily
reports showing all the progress percentages of the works carried out. Accordingly, I

was preparing the weekly reports based on the daily reports to report it to my technical
manager.
2.8.7 I have prepared an automatic Excel Spread sheet to calculate the stone pitching
quantity surrounding the culverts automatically which saved time and efforts by
entering the levels and dimension of the stone pitching.
2.8.8 Preparation of material required quantities and test plans as per the approved time
schedule and approved specifications to support the construction team with the exact
required material.
2.8.9 Carrying out the traffic sign and road painting design as per the European standards.
2.8.10 Preparation of the As-built drawings for the completed works in parallel with the
ongoing activities.
2.9 Summary
Even though I stayed for a short period on that project, this project was a turning point in my
career, after working in Egypt and in Saudi Arabia in local companies in a small scale projects, I was
looking forward to work in a multi-national company with a project over 100 million budget to gain
more confidence and understand system of working in the big organizations having a certain role
with a certain defined tasks and it open the way for my career to take roles in big multi-national
organization after that in Kuwait where I currently work.
This role improved my communication skills by dealing with different nationalities. Moreover, I
gained a knowledge on one more language Turkish in order to manage to interact with many
Turkish foremen who cannot communicate in English.
3.2.1 The project was located at Assir Region at the South of Saudi Arabia to connect
Tihama Region with Al Namas Mountain Area.
Civil Engineer
3.5 Background
3.5.1 The project name was Senan Decent Road, the project objective was to connect
Tihama region with Al Namas mountain area to be the alternative for old Senan Decent
Road which was very dangerous road and caused of a lot of deadly car accidents in
the latest years due to the steep longitudinal slope and very small curved horizontal
curves which doesn’t provide adequate sight distance.

3.9.1 At the start of the project I was responsible to identify the mountain material
classifications at the cut areas of the project either it is Hard Rock or Soft Rock or lose
material with the material Technician in order to apply the suitable typical road cross
section with the suitable cut and fill side slope.
laboratory data and the natural ground levels from the surveyors in order to manage
to calculate the cut and fill volume and to identify the cut line to the surveyors in order
to define the exact cut line to start the drilling process for the mountain blasting as the
cut depth was over 30 meters in some sections which require making perms and steps
during the excavation process. I was responsible to estimate the explosive material
required for the drilled area which is ready to be blasted and obtain necessary
permissions for the mountain blasting under the Saudi local relevant authorities.
3.9.2 I have designed the Box culverts within the project scope. First the hydrology Engineer
estimate the water discharge at the areas where there are steep valleys, After I start
designing the geometric of the culvert to choose the culvert slope based on the natural
geographical location considering max 12% slope based on the Saudi Ministry of
transportation standards. Number of box culverts vents and dimension of each vents
was designed based on Manning Equation as follows:
𝑘 𝐴
𝑄 = 𝐴𝑉 𝑊ℎ𝑒𝑟𝑒 𝑉 = 𝑆
𝑛 𝑃
𝑘 𝑖𝑠 𝑎 𝑢𝑛𝑖𝑡 𝑜𝑓 𝑐𝑜𝑛𝑣𝑒𝑟𝑠𝑖𝑜𝑛 𝑓𝑎𝑐𝑡𝑜𝑟 = 1.0 𝑓𝑜𝑟 𝑆𝐼 𝑢𝑛𝑖𝑡𝑠
A= Flow area of the culvert = N * W*H where N= Number of Vents, W= Width of Culvert, H =Height
P= Wetted perimeter
With the above inputs and considering the backfill height above the culvert until the
road finish level I was able to determine the structural requirements from the Saudi
Ministry of transportation standards for Culvert design manual.
3.9.3 The crossing bridge through KHAT valley represented a big challenge in my career as
it was my first bridge construction in addition to the geographical location where it is
always flooded the through the whole year. I was fully responsible for the pre
geotechnical investigation and verifying the bridge design and the construction form
the excavation by blasting as the natural ground was hard rock until the installation of
the expansion joints and completing the pavement works
The main challenge for me was casting the capping beams of the middle pier as it
would be high risk to cast with normal scaffolding resting on the foundation level facing
the flood. Therefore, my methodology was to place backfill around the bridge columns

until 3 meters below the capping beams shutter to split the flood away from the
capping beam.
The bridge was successfully completed and constructed same as per the design and
relevant standards.
3.9.4 I was responsible to make all necessary changes on the road profile and alignment
geometric design by using LAND Autodesk top software at that time (Prior to I update
myself and using Civil 3d), the modifications was necessary at certain places in order
to avoid unnecessary cutting on the mountain hard rock which will facilitate the work
flow and on the other hand will decrease the cut volume which allowed us to make
cost saving for the client. All the geometric modifications have been done in
accordance with AASHTO standards as applicable as sometimes it was impossible to
reach the required standards due to mountain hard conditions, all necessary changes
was reviewed and approved by the client.
I have carried out all of the super elevation design for all of the road alignment
including all of the transition spiral curves in accordance with the AASHTO standards.
3.9.5 I was responsible to follow up with the Material Laboratory for all daily material
inspections and testing and reviewing the results generated by using Excel spread
sheets to make necessary calculations for the material results and to review and
obtain approval for the concrete and asphalt mix design form the client.
Moreover, I was responsible to find a suitable material stockpile to be used for the
backfill and subgrade material such as A1-a, A1-b or A2-4 by making sieve analysis
test and chemical test in accordance with AASHTO standards.
3.9.6 I have prepared all the shop drawings related to the project; Bridge, Culverts and all
slope protections including all Bar Bending Schedule prepared in accordance with BS
standards, all prepared by using AutoCAD software.
3.9.7 I carried out the design of all of the traffic signs and road painting for the project in
accordance with the ministry of transportation standards and manage to obtain all
required approvals from the client traffic and transportation department prior to
execute it all successfully.
3.9.8 I was responsible for following up the project’s different subcontractor’s quality and
safety of work and make all necessary coordination. Moreover, I was responsible for
measuring their work and issuing the monthly interim payment.
3.9.9 I was responsible for a central batching planet at the construction site managing a
team consist of operator, labors and material inspector. Accordingly I was responsible

Page
BY AHMED SAMIR BASSIOUNI 01-March16 23 of 26
for all of the used material quality test plans and calibration of all of the batching planet
equipment, scales and timers. In additional to be responsible.
3.9.10 I have preparing the entire project measurements and the monthly interim payment
for the client submission and I carried out all the negotiations with the client in case of
any variation orders.
3.9.11 I managed a big team of foremen, labors, equipment operators, surveyors and
material inspectors in the same time during the project constructions.
3.9.12 I have completed all of the as built drawings and red line markup drawings at the end
of the project prior to hand over the project successfully to the client.
3.10 Summary
3.10.1 The project represented a big challenge to me as the project located in a mountain
area which was completely different nature and environment than previous experience
in my original country, the project was completed and successfully handed over to the
Saudi Arabia ministry of Transportation.
3.10.2 This project was a small project (25 Million USD) which gave me a chance to be
involved in all of the project discipline from construction, engineering, procurement to
even accounting part, which gave me a self confidence in my engineering skills and
give me a full understanding of managing a construction project from all aspects.
3.10.3 Moreover, that was my first project abroad project dealing with more than 10 different
nationalities which improved my communication skills.
3.10.4 The project was successfully completed and handed over to Saudi ministry of
