FOREWORD

This Self Learning Kit complies with the learning


standards and competencies prescribed by the K-12
curriculum of the Department of Education.

The components found in this self learning kit are as


follows:

I. What Happened – This is a pre-assessment activity. It


includes introductory activity of the topic that may also
serve as the springboard of the lesson.

II. What I Need to Know – This is the lesson proper or


the discussion part. This includes what you need to know
section so that you can easily identify essential concepts.

III. What I Have Learned – This is a set of enrichment


activities where it provides opportunity to evaluate
performance and gauge the skills that you have acquired.
Post test is given on this part.

As you go through the pages of this Self Learning Kit,


may you will be equipped with all the essential skills,
values, attitudes and knowledge in the fascinating world
of Science and may you continue to be amazed at how
Science affects you, your family and the global

I. WHAT HAPPENED
In this section you will get to see and study the basic parts of
the microscope.

Activity 1.

Arrange the scrambled letters in order to identify the parts of the

A. Care of the Microscope


1. Always carry the microscope with both hands, one hand
supports the base, the other grasps the curves arm.
2. When setting the microscope on the table, put it down greatly
and keep it at least 7 centimeters away from the edge of the
table. Keep everything not needed for microscope studies off
your laboratory table.
3. Wipe with tissue paper or old T-shirt the metal parts of the
microscope.

B. The Compound Light Microscopes and Its Parts

C. Parts of the Microscope and their Functions

Part Function

Eyepiece or ocular lens It allows the viewer to look at the enlarged


image of the specimen

Body tube or draw tube It supports the eyepiece

Revolving nosepiece It allows the shifting of the objectives;


It holds the objectives

Objective lenses It further magnifies an image under the


microscope

 Scanner – (3x, 4x, 5x) – The shortest


objective
 Low power objective (LPO) – (10x or
12x) which allows you to see the
general view of the specimen
 High power objective (HPO) – (40x, 43x
or 60x) which allows you to see the
detailed parts of the specimen
 Oil immersion objective (OIO) – (97x or
100x) – requires the use of oil used to
view bacteria, fungi and protists.

Coarse Adjustment Knob It focuses the specimen under the scanner


and objectives. It also facilitates the
movement of the body tube up and down.

Fine Adjustment Knob It focuses the specimen under the high power
objective and the oil-immersion objective.

Arm It allows you to tilt the microscope into


different angles.

Stage This is where the glass slide is mounted.

Stage Clip It holds the glass slide in place.

Diaphragm It regulates the amount of light that will pass


through the stage.

Mirror It reflects the light onto the specimen for


viewing.

Inclination joint It allows you to tilt the microscope into

different angles.

Base It supports the entire body of the microscope.

What you need to know…

 A microscope is a tool that provides an enlarged image of an object.


It
allows you to see things that cannot be seen by the unaided eyes.
 Hans and Zacharias Jansen produced the first compound microscope
in
1608.
 Antoine van Leeuwenhoek (1632-1723) was able to make a
compound
microscope that had a higher magnification than early compound
microscopes.
 Magnification is the ability to make images of small objects bigger up
to a
certain number of times than their actual sizes.
 Resolution is the ability to distinguish between parts of a certain object.
 Magnification of the object is the product of multiplying the ocular
value
by the objective value.
 Dimensions of microorganisms (usually their length) are measured in
micrometers (μm). 1mm = 1000 μm
 Before turning the revolving nosepiece in any direction, the body tube
must be raised using the coarse adjustment knob. A circling sound is
heard when the objective is in position
 Field of view of the microscope is the bright circle of light upon looking
the
eyepiece when the mirror of the microscope is positioned towards
diffused light from the windows or ceiling light.

Things to remember…….

* Only use lens paper in cleaning the lenses of the eyepiece and the
objectives.

* Tilting the microscope allows one to do observations while seating down.


However, this can be done when materials observed do not contain
liquids like water.

* Keep both eyes open while looking into the microscope.


Using only one eye while viewing may give you eyestrain.

SYNOPSIS

This Self Learning Kit is


made for Grade 7 students
in order to introduce the
basic parts of the
microscope. In this module,
students are able to identify
the various parts and its
corresponding functions as
well the proper way of
handling and manipulating
the different components of
the microscope.

The initial learning


obtain in this module shall
enable the students to
effectively and efficiently
utilize the laboratory
equiment in studying
microscopic objects and
other life forms which are
commonly not visible to the
naked eye.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR

Ma. Aletta Aarona Repollo Gajelomo is a Science teacher


of Siaton National High School, Siaton, Negros Oriental.
She obtained her Bachelor’s degree in General Science
from St. Paul College of Dumaguete (now St. Paul
University of Dumaguete). She earned 36 masteral units
(Completed Academic Requirements) from the University
of Southern Philippines in Lahug, Cebu City. She is currently
a Secondary School Teacher III of Siaton National High
School and a District Science Writer of the Division of
Negros Oriental.
