MODULE 2_The Intellectual Revolutions.

Answer the following questions:

1. History taught us that man’s desire of understanding nature lead to the birth of Science as
such many early philosophers and intellectuals engaged in studies further expanding man’s
understanding of our planet and beyond. It also tells of the merits or controversy brought by
studies that challenge existing beliefs. To name a few are
a. Copernicus- Heliocentric Theory,
Copernican heliocentrism is the astronomical model developed by Nicolaus Copernicus
and published in 1543. This model positioned the Sun at the center of the Universe,
motionless, with Earth and the other planets orbiting around it in circular paths,
modified by epicycles, and at uniform speeds. The Copernican model displaced the
geocentric model of Ptolemy that had prevailed for centuries, which had placed Earth at
the center of the Universe.
b. Darwin - Theory of Evolution
Darwin proposed that species can change over time, that new species come from pre-
existing species, and that all species share a common ancestor. In this model, each
species has its own unique set of heritable (genetic) differences from the common
ancestor, which have accumulated gradually over very long time periods.
c. Freud- Psychoanalysis Theory.
Freud hypothesized that an individual must successfully complete each stage to become
a psychologically healthy adult with a fully formed ego and superego. Otherwise,
individuals may become stuck or “fixated” in a particular stage, causing emotional and
behavioral problems in adulthood (McLeod, 2013).

TASK: Search for the above-mentioned theories and discover the manner of how the scientific
community and the public responded to these 3 famous studies that challenged what was widely
accepted.
After the investigation, collate all the information and present using a table
a) How did fellow philosophers, intellectuals, and the public respond to these 3
famous theories?

Answer: Most other philosophers, thinkers, and members of the public responded
to these 3 well-known theories, as they were supported by sufficient data and
accurate information. When then Lack of background knowledge, evidence to
support these views, and The next step is some research gap. The public adopted
the three aforementioned theories gradually and some people still hold these three
hypotheses to be true today.

b) Are there similarities in the responses of the public and the scientific community
to Copernicus’, Darwin’s & Freud’s theories? Are there differences?

Answer: The public's and scientists' perspectives on issues relating to science are
remarkably divergent issues. Similar to how the scientific community responded,
confusion followed the 3 suggested theories as a result of informational gaps.
However, the scientific community responds differently than the general population,
with scientists conducting more thorough investigation into the three while the
general public gradually accepts these theories.

c) Is there an observable pattern? Explain.

Answer: There is a discernible pattern that underlies the development of these 3

examples hypotheses in which everything began with curiosity and was later
explored to produce theories the aforementioned creators. Yet ultimately, some of
the crucial information was missing demonstrate the viability of their theories.

2. Why do you think were most intellectual ideas controversial?

Answer: Most intellectual ideas were controversial for a reason people want to validate their
theory. If there's a sudden change in the present theory this will result in a paradigm shift.
It's hard to neglect your previous belief just to believe something new.

3. Why did the people accept these new discoveries despite being contradictory to what was
accepted at that time?
Answer: It's because fresh findings are thoroughly investigated and shown to be superior to
previously widely held beliefs. The steps of the scientific method are used in the study or
inquiry. A successful new discovery requires a lot of work, money, and time to produce. This
is the main defense for why new findings are accepted even when they contradict long-held
assumptions.

4. How do intellectual revolutions transform societies?

Answer: Intellectual revolutions transform societies through their mindsets. It will transform
their critical-thinking on how they see things that will create new approaches for equal
opportunity.
5. Research on the POSITIVE and NEGATIVE results brought by innovations and technological
advances in the information age.
Answer: Technology development and adoption have benefited societies by increasing
productivity, expanding access to services, and enhancing overall wellbeing. At this point, we
can unequivocally attest to how innovative and technologically advanced our current world
is. We are now referred to as living in the information or digital age as a result. Positive and
negative repercussions of these innovations and technical advancements include the
following.
Positive Result
Technology is essential for easy communication, effective working, quick task completion,
easy access to information, expanded security, improved communication, more information,
education, and, last but not least, entertainment.

Negative Effects

Social media and mobile gadgets may cause psychological problems as well as physical
problems including eyestrain and trouble focusing on crucial tasks. However, they may
exacerbate more severe health disorders like depression, sleep apnea, obesity, and online
game addiction. Moreover, it may result in the rise of cybercrimes, educational hurdles, loss
of privacy,& Distances people from one another (implicitly).
