Problem: The reading difficulty of some students in Santa Cruz Integrated National High School
Extension (SCINHS-Extension) that causes their poor academic performance.
Objectives:
1. Create a program that will contain several interventions that will be agreed upon by the
teachers, parents, and children to be used to improve the reading skills of SCINHS-Extension
students;
2. Utilize some interventions to improve the reading ability of the students in Santa Cruz
Integrated National High School Extension (SCINHS-Extension);
3. Attend to the needs of students who need proper attention in order to develop their reading
skills, thereby improving their academic performance.
During a few days of observation, the researchers found that a number of SCINHS students
struggle with reading, resulting in low grades and poor academic performance. When called
upon for recitation, some students say nothing and do not participate because they read poorly,
while others do not know how to read at all. This is a concerning situation, especially given that
they are high school students. They are unable to express their thoughts and ideas in class
because they are hesitant to expose their reading weaknesses, which prevents them from getting
excellent grades in their studies.
3. What interventions and techniques are effective for improving children's reading?
I. Participants
Twenty (20) students from grades 7–10 in Santa Cruz Integrated National High School
Extension (SCINHS-Extension) will participate in the study.
The researchers will initially give the students a pretest to assess their level of reading difficulty.
Following the pretest, the students will take part in monitored reading development interventions
for a month. A post-test will then be conducted to assess the significance of the interventions on
the improvement of the participants' reading skills after a month.
Place of the Study: Santa Cruz Integrated National High School Extension (SCINHS-Extension)
Implementation Proper: February 20, 2023 - March 20, 2023, Applying interventions to improve
reading skills of the learners
Pretest - The participants will be given reading material to read, and the incorrect words they say
will be recorded by the researchers in order to assess how poor the children's reading difficulties
are.
Post-test - The participants will be given reading material to read, and the incorrect words they
say will be recorded by the researchers in order to evaluate how the children's reading skills
improved after undergoing a month of guided interventions.
Interview with the teachers and parents - Researchers will conduct interviews with Santa Cruz
Integrated National High School Extension (SCINHS-Extension) teachers and parents to learn
the factors why students struggle with reading. Through this, there will be a deeper
understanding of which programs should be employed to help learners improve their reading
skills.
The researchers seek to help the students of Santa Cruz Integrated National High School
Extension (SCINHS-Extension) with their reading problems. With the help of teachers, parents,
and the participants, the system for improving their reading skills can be implemented. The
participants' academic performances are expected to improve as a result of this.
