1. It was only in later times that the word university came to mean the building in
which learned men studied and taught others. Even in modern times, a university is a place
not only where young people come to receive higher education, but where other men and
women try to increase the world’s store of knowledge.
2. It’s true that most students go to a university to study some special subject or group
of subjects, a knowledge of which will make it possible for them to earn their living as
doctors, lawyers, engineers , teachers , etc. but it is recognized that a university must do
more than supply the facts of medicine, law, engineering or whatever a man may have to do
or teach: it must train its students in such a way that they themselves will always be eager to
search for new knowledge and new ideas
3. What is education? It is much more than the knowledge we find in books. If a man
is truly educated, he will have been shown how to lead a happy and useful life and to be a
good citizen of the country in which he lives; more even that- a good citizen of the world. He
will have learnt how to behave towards other human beings. By coming in touch with the
active minds of his teachers and fellow students, he will have discovered what kind of mind
he himself has; and he will have become proud to do what he knows to be right , and ashamed
of doing what he knows to be wrong. The cleverest man is not always the best educated.
4. A wise man is one who is able to think clearly, and then act in such a way that the
best results follow. Knowledge is very useful, but knowledge by itself does not make a man
wise. We need a special kind of education which will train us to use our knowledge wisely.
For example, there has been a great increase in scientific knowledge during the present
century, but the wisdom of man has not increased at the same rate. Wisdom guides us to make
the best use of our knowledge. Without wisdom, however much we know, we remain foolish.
5. One of the most important things, therefore, to learn at a university is how the
greatest men and women in the world have thought and acted in the past. That is why every
educated person must know something of history and literature, for these are the record of the
lives and minds and ideas of such people. We learn a great many facts in our study of
medicine, law, science and language, but unless we learn the wisdom that will help us to make
the best use of these facts we shall not get the full value of a university education.

b. What sort of relationship does the writer establish between education and life?
Education should furnish man with the necessary amount of knowledge and open horizons to
the enthusiastic minds for further research and discovery. It can also be considered as a path
to a civilized world in which man is prepared to behave properly and assume his
responsibility as a good citizen.
c. Do you think that wisdom is necessary for any educated person to make the best use of
what he knows? Why, or why not?
Yes, I do believe that wisdom and education should be the two sides of the same coin if good
results are meant to be achieved.
2. Say whether the following statements are true or false. Justify with reference to the
text.
a. Scientific knowledge and wisdom increase in a parallel way. (False)

during the present century, but the wisdom of man has not increased in the same rate.”
