9Fa – Demolition/Types of explosion


Word Pronunciation Meaning
chemical reaction A change in which one or more new substances are
formed.
explosive ex-plO-siv An explosive substance reacts very fast, releasing a lot
of energy and gas.
flammable A flammable substance catches fire easily.
implosion im-plo-shun An object is destroyed by collapsing in on itself.
particle theory A theory used to explain the different properties and
observations of solids, liquids and gases.
physical change A change in which no new substances are formed
(e.g. changes of state).
pressure The amount of force pushing on a certain area. It is a
way of saying how spread out a force is.
word equation Word eck-way-shun An equation in which the names of the reactant(s) are
written on the left-hand side, there is an arrow pointing
from left to right and the names of the products are
written on the right-hand side.

Word Pronunciation Meaning
native state When a metal is found in the Earth as an element.
oxidation Reaction in which a substance gains oxygen.
reactivity series A list of metals that shows them in order of reactivity with
the most reactive metal at the top.
rust A weak, brown, crumbly solid, formed when iron
corrodes. (A mixture of oxides and hydroxides of iron
including iron hydroxide.)
sacrificial protection Using a more reactive metal to protect iron from rusting.

endothermic reaction end-O-ther-mik A reaction in which energy is transferred to the reactants
from the surroundings. The temperature of the
surroundings decreases.
exothermic reaction ex-O-ther-mik A reaction in which energy is transferred from the
reactants to the surroundings. The temperature of the
surroundings increases.
hydrocarbon hi-drO-car-bon A compound containing hydrogen and carbon only.
oxidising agent ox-id-eyes-ing A substance that provides oxygen to oxidise another
substance.

displace When one element takes the place of another element in
a compound.
displacement reaction A reaction where a more reactive element takes the
place of a less reactive element in a compound.

electrolysis ell-ek-troll-e-sis Breaking down a substance using electricity.
mineral A naturally occurring element or compound that can
form distinct grains in rocks.
ore A rock that contains enough of a certain mineral to make
it worth mining.
reduced If a substance has lost oxygen then it has been reduced.
reducing agent A substance that removes oxygen from another
substance.
