Chaos Dwarf society has been largely isolated from the events in the Old World throughout its

CHAOS DWARF MAGIC

Unlike their cousins from the Worlds Edge Mountains, Chaos Dwarfs are adept in the magical arts.
When they first turned to the worship of Hashut, he granted them knowledge of the Winds of Magic
and gave them mastery over fire and stone, and the magic Lores to which they have access reflect this.
Chaos Dwarfs are also masters of Daemon-binding, because they have no fear whatsoever of the
denizens of the Realm of Chaos, and treat them as just another race to be enslaved. This use of
Daemons is represented by some of the Chaos Dwarf Magic Items, their Tauruses and Daemonic
Engines and the additional magic Lores to which Sorcerer Lords have access.

Chaos Dwarfs are as resistant to magic as their western kin, and this is why the mutations they suffer
as a result of their exposure to Chaos in ancient times are relatively stable. It is also why their Priests
are afflicted by the Sorcerers' Curse. However, because they have embraced the dark arts, Chaos
Dwarfs lack the kind of focused resilience to harmful magic possessed by other Dwarfs. Chaos Dwarf
armies do not receive the additional Dispel dice that normal Dwarfs do as described in the
Warhammer rule book.

AT THE GATES OF ZHARR

Helmut cast his eyes skyward, trying to take in the vast dark arch that spanned the purpling
sky. Its size defied rationality; enormous beyond any previous experience in his four decades
of life. Even the great Temple of Sigmar in Altdorf would have been dwarfed beside this
mighty structure. He slowly made a circuit of one of the massive columns that held the arch
aloft, wider than an Imperial highway, and it took him several minutes before he returned to
his starting place.
"I don't understand what I'm looking at," he finally said.
His companion, a wizened scholar from the College of Antiquity, held up an ornate eyepiece
and carefully examined the inscriptions that covered the huge stone column. Every inch was
inscribed with tiny, angular runes, stretching up the full length of the support: the contents of
many hundreds of tomes must have been etched in the stone, and the lack of rain in this
desolate land had ensured they were still legible.
"It appears to be a form of Khazalid."
"Dwarfish?"
"Yes, but a highly deviant form."
"Deviant?" Helmut adjusted his sword in his scabbard and shivered inwardly. His troops,
two-score Imperial soldiers, were all standing idle nearby, trying not to look too hard at the
immense arch that had dominated the horizon for weeks as they approached it from the
south. Up close, it was even more mind-destroying in its vastness. The team of explorers and
scientists they were protecting were all investigating the structure in different ways,
depending on their respective fields. Only the old professor, Doctor Schalzenbourg, was
squinting at the writing.
"It's clearly recognisable as Khazalid all right," he murmured, "but I see the influence of
more...heathen tongues...upon it. There is something of the northman's speech in this
language, I hazard."
Helmut grew even more uncomfortable. He had hated this stark land since they had crossed
the mountains, and the possible presence of creatures that could have erected this arch did
little to assuage his fears. Schalzenbourg had assured him that the only inhabitants of the
Dark Lands were Greenskin tribes and that none of them had the ability to construct
something like this. Whoever had built this awesome feat of architecture was long gone.
"Gunter, could you assist me?" the doctor asked, and presently he was joined by the
mysterious Professor of Astromancy in his elaborate robes. The bearded wizard peered at the
script for a long moment.
"Languages aren't exactly my speciality, Hans..."
"But you know the Tongues of Magic, do you not? I think you can fill in the gaps in my
knowledge here."
The Astromancer looked dubious, but set to the task with a will nonetheless and, as the
weakling sun that shone wanly over the Dark Lands began to set and band began to make
camp, they made quick progress.
Helmut's curiosity eventually got the better of him and he walked over to the two academics.
"So what does it say?"
"It's very interesting, my boy," Shcalzenbourg told him, "this line is repeated often, and seems
to have been given some importance by the builders. Let me give your our translation – it is
imperfect, but adequate. It reads thus: 'My name is Zhargon, king of kings: Behold the Gates
of Fire. Look upon my work, ye Mighty and despair.'"
Helmut felt another chill run down his spine. "Gates of Fire?"
Schalzenbourg shrugged. "I don't understand the significance either."
Helmut looked out across the horizon, feeling that inexplicable shudder again. Were his ears
deceiving him, or could he hear the distant beat of drums? Perhaps it was just thunder.

The Trails of Hashut
The Trails were a highly volcanic region in the north of the Dark Lands. Long ago, a
mighty Daemon Prince of Khorne was imprisoned beneath a monolith at the centre of the
lava flows. The Chaos Dwarfs thoroughly mapped the Trails and used them as a
defensive bulwark against invasion from the north, along with a complex netrowk of
fortresses surrounding it. However, a Khornate warband made an assault on the Trails
and succeeding in freeing the Daemon Prince, causing the Trails of Hashut to turn
dormant. Both races record the battle that was fought at the Monolith in their histories,
and it marked the end of the Chaos Dwarfs' isolation from the northern tribes, since they
could no longer defend their borders from them.

APPENDIX
This section of the book details goes into some of the changes to the Chaos Dwarf
army, and how it affects existing players who have collections of Chaos Dwarf
miniatures as well as some ideas for using the customisable mounts and war
engines that are unique to this army.

USING YOUR OLD MODELS WITH THE NEW RULES

Few armies in Warhammer inspire the kind of devotion that Chaos Dwarfs do. It is their very scarcity
and relative obscurity that makes them desirable for some people – amassing a usable army requires a
large investment of time and effort, and the length of time since their last legal rules were published
means that they are rarely competitive in serious games. For this reason, a Chaos Dwarf army is a
labour of love, and players may well be very attached to their collection. An effort has been made to
keep older models usable with these new rules, but there are some instances in which players may have
to resort to 'counts-as', or alter the composition of units slightly to make them fit. Below are some
guidelines on how to use your old models with this army list.

Chaos Dwarf Lords, Sorcerer Lords, Hobgoblins

DAEMONIC CONSTRUCTS
The customisation rules given in this book provide some excellent opportunities for players to create all
manner of creatures and war machines. However, it can be intimidating for a new player (or even an
experienced one) to try to realise the potential of so many possible combinations. Below are some
suggestions for Daemonic Constructs created using the rules in the main list. Players can use these as-

THE FOURTH GRUDGE
LET IT BE KNOWN THAT IN ANCIENT TIMES A PORTION OF OUR RACE JOURNEYED FAR FROM OUR
SIGHT INTO THE BLEAK REALMS OF THE FAR NORTH. THERE, THEY ERECTED GREAT FORTRESSES OF
OBSIDIAN IN THE GREAT SKULL LAND IN IMITATION OF THE MOUNTAIN HOLDS OF THEIR BRETHREN.
THEN, WITH NO WARNING, THE TIME OF CHAOS SWEPT DOWN FROM THE THE UTMOST NORTH AND
CONSUMED THE WORLD. THAT TALE IS TOLD IN THE SECOND GRUDGE. OUR COUSINS IN THE GREAT
SKULL LAND WERE UNPROTECTED FROM THE WARPING POWERS OF CHAOS AND, IN THEIR FOLLY,
TURNED THEIR BACKS UPON THE ANCESTOR GODS. THEY BETRAYED THE MOST SACREDSACRED OATHS OF
OUR PEOPLE AND WERE NO LONGER CONSIDERED DWARFS. BUT THIS IS NOT THE FULL TALE OF THE
FOURTH GRUDGE. THE GREATEST BLASPHEMY OF ALL WAS COMMITTED BY THESE SUNDERED ONCE- ONCE-
DWARFS AS, IN THEIR DARKEST HOUR, THEY CALLED UPON FOUL POWERS TO DELIVER TH THEM.
EM. THEIR
BLACK PRAYER WAS ANSWERED BY ONE OF THE MANY GODS OF CHAOS, WHOSE NAME WILL NOT BE
REPEATED HERE, BUT WHO IS KNOWN AS THE FATHER OF DARKNESS. THEY OPENED THEIR TRAITOROUS
HEARTS TO THIS MONSTROUS DAEMON AND BEGAN TO WORSHIP HIM IN PLACE OF THE ANCESTOR
ANCESTOR
GODS. IN TIME, THEY FOUNDED A GREAT CIVILISATION IN THE DARK LANDS, BUILT AROUND THE
WORSHIP OF THEIR BLASPHEMOUS GOD, CREATING A VAST TEMPLE-
TEMPLE-CITY TO HIM AND REAPING ALL
THE LAND AROUND OF ITS RICHES. THEIR CRIMES ARE MANIFOLD.

FIRST: THEY BETRAYED

BETRAYED THE ANCESTOR GODS, AND SO ARE NOT HELD TO BE TRUE DWARFS.

SECOND: THEY WORSHIP A GOD OF CHAOS, AND SO ARE NOT HELD TO BE TRUE DWARFS.

THIRD: THEY CONSPIRE WITH ORC AND GOBLIN, AND SO ARE NOT HELD TO BE TRUE DWARFS.

FOURTH: THEY MINE WITHOUT REASON OR PURPOSE, TAKING FROM THE EARTH WHATEVER THEY
WISH WITH NO CONCERN FOR THE NECCESITY OF THEIR LABOUR, AND SO ARE NOT HELD TO BE TRUE
DWARFS.

FIFTH: THEY SPORT MUTATIONS OF THE BODY CAUSED BY THEIR EXPOSURE TO CHAOS, AND SO ARE
NOT HELD TO BE TRUE DWARFS.

SIXTH: THEY CONSORT WITH DAEMONS, TORMENTING MACHINES BY BINDING FOUL SPIRITS INTO
THEM, AND SO ARE NOT HELD TO BE TRUE DWARFS.

SEVENTH: THEY HAVE ON EVERY OCCASION OF OUR MEETINGS, FOUGHT AND ATTEMPTED TO KILL OR
ENSLAVE DWARFS, AND SO ARE NOT HELD TO BE TRUE DWARFS.

EIGTH: THEY ARE KEEPERS OF SLAVES; MAN, ELF AND, MOST TERRIBLY, DWARF. NO DWARF MAY OWN
ANOTHER INTELLIGENT CREATURE AND FORCE HIM TO LABOUR AGAINST HIS WISHES, AND SO THEY
ARE NOT HELD TO BE TRUE DWARFS.

FOR THESE REASONS, OUR EASTERN KIN, SUNDERED FROM US IN ANCIENT TIMES, ARE NOT DWARFS,
AND WILL NOT BE ACKNOWLEDGED AS SUCH. THEY ARE NOT SONS OF GRUNGI, BUT TRAITORS OF
THE VILEST KIND, AND LET THEIR CURSED NAME NOT BE SPOKEN OF OUTSIDE THIS TOME, AND LET NO
RUMOURS OF THEIR EXISTENCE PASS THE LIPS OF ANY TRUE DWARF,
DWARF, AND LET NO OUTSIDER KNOW
THE DEPTH OF OUR DISGRACE FOR SUFFERING THEIR CONTINUED EXISTENCE.

SO IT IS WRITTEN BY I, HIGH KING MORGRIM BLACKBREARD OF KARAZ A KARAK IN MY OWN BLOOD,

AND SO IT WILL BE UNTIL THIS GRUDGE IS AVENGED.

- Translated from the Great Book of Grudges

...AND HASHUT SPAKE UNTO THEM AND BID THEM STAND BEFORE HIM ON THE MOUNTAIN TOP.
HIS VOICE WAS THUNDER AND HIS BREATH WAS FIRE. HE TOLD THEM THAT HE HAD PREPARED A
MIGHTY TASK THAT WOULD TAKE THEIR LIVES,
LIVES, THE LIVES OF THEIR DESCENDANTS AND THE
LIVES OF ALL THEIR CLANS IN PERPETUITY. THEIR LABOUR FROM THIS DAY FORTH WOULD BE
TURNED TO THE WORSHIP OF HIM AND THEIR TASKS WOULD SERVE HIS PURPOSES.

AND LO! FOR THEY WERE TRANSFORMED! MEEK DWARFS OF STONE THEY
THEY WERE NO LONGER, BUT
NOW REMADE IN THE IMAGE OF HASHUT AND IMBUED WITH A PORTION OF HIS AWESOME POWER.
THEY HAD BECOME THE DWARFS OF FIRE, WHO ARE BLESSED IN THE SIGHT OF THE FATHER OF
DARKNESS AND FEAR NO CREATURE THAT WALKS OR CRAWLS UPON THE EARTH, OR WHICH FLIES
IN THE SKY, OR WHICH SWIMS IN THE SEAS, OR WHICH HIDES IN THE SHADOWS.

AND THE ENVOYS OF HASHUT, WHO HAD HEARD HIS HOLY WORD, CAME DOWN FROM THE MOUNTAIN
TOP TO REJOIN THEIR PEOPLE. AND THE DWARFS WHO WERE THEIR KIN ASKED THEM WHERE
THEY HAD BEEN AND WHAT THEY HAD SEEN, AND THE ENVOYS GAVE THEM THE WORD OF HASHUT,
AND TOLD THEM TO OBEY THE FATHER OF DARKNESS, WITH WHOM THEY HAD SPOKEN.

BUT THE OTHER DWARFS DID NOT BELIEVE THEM, AND THEY DOUBTED THE WORD OF HASHUT.
THEY WERE AFRAID OF THE VOICE
VOICE OF THE FATEHR OF DARKNESS, WHICH HIS ENVOYS NOW
CARRIED WITH THEM. AND THE EVOYS SAID: "BEHOLD! FOR HAVE WE NOT BEEN TRANSFORMED?
IS THE MARK OF HASHUT NOT UPON US? DWARFS OF STONE NO LONGER ARE WE, BUT NOW
DWARFS OF FIRE!" AND AS THEY SPOKE, FLAMES SURROUNDED
SURROUNDED THEM, AND THEIR KIN GASPED
AT THEIR HOLY AURAS. AND THE ENVOYS SPOKE AGAIN: "HASHUT HAS BLESSED US WITH A
PORTION OF HIS AWESOME POWER, AND WE HAVE BEEN GIVEN THE GIFT OF FIRE SO THAT WE
MAY COMMAND THE ELEMENTS TO DO OUR BIDDING. CAST ASIDE YE WEAK
WEAK AND PITIFUL RUNIC
MAGIC, THE STRENGTH OF WHICH PALES INTO COMPARRISON NEXT TO THE WILL OF HASHUT!"

SOME OF THE DWARFS WERE STILL AFRAID. THEY CLUNG TO THE ANCIENT WAYS AND WOULD NOT
RELINQUISH THEIR BLASPHEMOUS ARTEFACTS. THE ENVOYS THUS COMMANDED THOSE WHO
REMAIND LOYAL TO THEM TO TAKE THEM FROM THE UNBELIEVERS AND THEN SMITE THEM
RIGHTEOUSLY. AND SO THE RUNIC ARTEFACTS OF THE FORGOTTEN WEST WERE SMASHED UPON
THE EARTH AND GROUND INTO DUST, IMMOLATED BY THE FIRES OF THE FATHER OF DARKNESS
HIMSELF, AND THOSE
THOSE WHO HAD CARRIED THEM WERE KILLED AND THEIR BONES LEFT TO BE
PICKED CLEAN BY CARRION AND TURN TO DUST AS WELL.

THUS DID THE ENVOYS OF THE FATHER OF DARKNESS BRING THE WORD OF HASHUT TO THEIR
PEOPLE AND, AS THEY BEGAN TO WORSHIP HIM, SO THEY WERE CHANGED
CHANGED TOO, ALSO BECOMING
DWARFS OF FIRE. HASHUT WROUGHT GREAT CHANGES ON THEM, BESTOWING HIS MARK UPON THEM
AND TURNING THEIR BEARDS BLACK, WHICH IS HIS HOLY COLOUR. THEN HE GAVE THEM GREAT
STRENGTH AND TUSKS AND HORNS LIKE THE BEAST WHICH IS SACRED TO HIM. THEN
THEN SOME OF
THEIR NUMBER HE REMADE IN HIS OWN IMAGE, SO THAT THEIR HINDQUARTERS WERE AS THE
BULL, AND SOME HE TOOK UNTO HIS OWN BOSOM AND CRAFTED FROM THEIR BODIES A GREAT
RED BULL WITH MIGHTY WINGS AND HE SAID UNTO HIS ENVOYS: "THIS IS MY MOST BLESSED
CREATURE,
CREATURE, THIS RED BULL OF HASHUT, AND ALWAYS IT WILL SERVE YOU, BUT DO NOT
FORSAKE OR ANGER IT AND ALWAYS RESPECT AND REVERE IT, FOR IT CARRIES WITHIN IT A
PORTION OF MY MOST TERRIBLE FURY AND BURNS WITH THE HEAT OF MY VERY HEART." FROM
THAT DAY, THE DWARFS OF FIRE ALWAYS HELD THE BULL, WHICH IS THE TRUE FORM OF
HASHUT, TO BE HOLY.

AND THE ENVOYS OF HASHUT GATHERED THE DWARFS OF FIRE WHO WERE THEIR PEOPLE AROUND
THEM AND TOLD THEM OF THE GREAT TASK THAT LAY AHEAD OF THEM. THEY SAID: "WE MUST
GO FAR FROM HERE,
HERE, ON A GREAT JOURNEY TO A PROMISED LAND, WHERE WE CAN WORSHIP THE
FATHER OF DARKNESS. THIS, HE HAS COMMANDED."

- Translated from the Tablets of Law
