INFORMATIVE SPEECH

PREPARATION OUTLINE (INFORMATIVE SPEECH)

Title : Insomnia- What You Don’t Know!
General Purpose : To inform my audience what is insomnia
Central Idea : Sleepless night can greatly affect a person mental health and well-being,
there are solutions to overcome it.

INTRODUCTION

I. A sleepless night where you can literally feel every second passing yet you are still in your
bed, tucked in in your blanket, staring into the dark ceiling of your room but not feeling
sleepy at all. Does it ever happen to any of you? You tried laying down, lay flat on your
stomach and even sideway. This is the common symptom of insomnia. (Attention getter)

II. Me myself, have experienced this on daily routine until I decided to look up on research on
insomnia. Believe it or not, insomnia is more common than you think especially among
studdent (Credibility Statement)

III. However, the more you know and learn about insomnia, the more solution and option you
can opt for the one that is suitable for you. (Reason to Listen)

IV. Insomnia is a really common problem among many people, everyone should be informed
and learn on how to solve it. (Central idea)

(Transition: Without further ado, let us get an understanding of insomnia)

BODY

I. Insomnia is a difficulty falling asleep (onset) or staying asleep (maintenance), even when
the person has the chance to do so (Main idea 1)

A. According to an article on the National Sleep Foundation website, insomnia can be


characterized based on its duration (Supporting Detail)

(1) Acute insomnia is brief and often happens because of life circumstances
(Sub Detail 1)
(a) For example, you are not able to fall asleep the night before and exam or after
receiving a stressful or bad news

(2) Chronic insomnia is disrupted sleep that occurs at least three nights per week
(Sub Detail 2)
(a) Changes in the environment, unhealthy sleep habits, working abnormal hours,
and certain medications could lead to a long-term pattern of insufficient sleep

(b) Chronic insomnia can be linked to another medical or psychiatric issue,


although sometimes it is difficult to understand this cause

B. People with insomnia can feel dissatisfied with their sleep and usually experience the
symptoms such as fatigue, low energy, difficulty concentrating, moodiness and
negatively affect performance in work or at school (Supporting Detail)

(1) According to Beatrice Turkoski in her 2006 Managing Insomnia article in


Orthopedic Nursing, 35% of the population complains of acute insomnia and at
least 10% of those reported having chronic insomnia that affects mental function,
interpersonal relationships, occupational stability, personal safety, and response
to psychological or physiological stress. (Sub Detail)

how it can affect your mental health)

II. Insomnia increases the risk of mental illness and can trigger any pre-existing illnesses as
well. (Main idea 2)

A. According to Pat MacDonald’s 2008 book “How to Help Patients with Insomnia”, the
cerebral cortex is responsible for sustaining attention and planning aspects of
behavior, including speech and working memory. (Supporting Detail)

(1) When sleep deprived, not only do we have trouble expressing ourselves, but
there is also limited access to long term memory and we find it hard to express
and convey our ideas

B. At night, time seems to behave differently; stopping or jumping ahead in an alarming


way and when we are unable to sleep, sensitivity to our emotions is raised.

(1) Based on Sleep Foundation website regarding Anxiety and Sleep, it was stated
that anxiety is frequently connected to sleeping problems. Since anxiety is a
feeling of worry and unease, excess worry and fear make it harder to fall asleep
and stay asleep through the night. Sleep deprivation can worsen anxiety, spurring
a negative cycle involving insomnia and anxiety disorders. If we are frightened or
worried for example, insomnia increases our anxiety (Sub Detail)

(Transition: Now that you know how you can be affected by insomnia, let’s look at what anyone
with sleep problem should do to solve this issue)

III. No matter what your age, insomnia usually is treatable. The key often lies in changes to
your routine during the day and when you go to bed. (Main idea 3)

B. As an avid coffee drinker, I have had to learn my limits the hard way on how late in the
day I can drink coffee. I have had a seemingly harmless espresso at 4 p.m., only to

find myself feeling exhausted at bedtime, and yet laying in bed staring at the ceiling
wishing I could drift off to sleep. (Supporting Detail)

CONCLUSION

I. Sleep deprivation is very common, and in order to understand sleep deprivation you need
to know what it is, the effect, and how to treat it (summary of the topic)

II. Insomnia is not just a nuisance or small inconvenience. It is a sleep disorder that can
affect mental and emotional health along with physical well-being. (Reinforce central
idea)

III. I will end my speech with a quote from Denis Waitley, “Time and health are two precious
assets that we don't recognize and appreciate until they have been depleted.” We all may
think we are simply too busy to have fixed bedtimes and more hours of sleep at night, but
our body needs rest in order to function properly. So next time you navigate to Facebook’s
login page after midnight, you better think twice (Strong concluding statement)
