in dealing with discrimination. How does he/she inspire you? Write your answers in the

B. Discussion/ Deepening of Concepts
Every single day, we listen to message from various forms of media such as the
news, advertisement, talk show, and speeches. All of these espouse a particular bias. In
essence, a bias is a stance that a speaker assumes in favor of an idea, policy, or value.
It can be said that all speeches have bias since each person comes from a
particular context and point of view. By determining a speaker's bias, we come to realize
his or her situation and what he or she wants to achieve.
Being sensitive to others means understanding their joy, their pain, their
situation, and where they are coming from. The test of our sensitivity is when we
understand other people without bias or prejudice. A bias is a highly personal or
unreasoned, deformed, or twisted judgment otherwise known as prejudice. Thus,
someone who looks at people or things with bias usually tends to stick to his own
judgement, no matter how distorted it is.

LISTEN TO A POINT
A news report presents facts about people or events. It does not contain the
writer’s opinion. A news reporter gathers information from different sources, such as
people, public records, books, etc., and then presents this information in the most
accurate way possible. It’s up to the readers or listeners to make their conclusion based
on the facts and findings presented.
Critical listening means using careful, systematic thinking and reasoning to see
whether a message makes sense in light of factual evidence. Critical listening can be
learned with practice but is not necessarily easy to do. Some people never learn this
skill; instead, they take every message at face value even when those messages are in
conflict with their knowledge. Problems occur when messages are repeated to others
who have not yet developed the skills to discern the difference between a valid
message and a mistaken one. Critical listening can be particularly difficult when the
message is complex. Unfortunately, some speakers may make their messages
intentionally complex to avoid critical scrutiny.
Critical listening can be improved by employing one or more strategies to help
the listener analyze the message: recognize the difference between facts and opinions,
uncover assumptions given by the speaker, be open to new ideas, use both reason and
common sense when analyzing messages, relate new ideas to old ones, and take
useful notes.

Take note of information that will you decide whether the news report is valid, accurate,
relevant, and with adequate information.
