Chapter 9 - Elias and Salome "Missing Chapter of Noli"
Rizal faced a lot of challenges in Berlin, particularly he was tested financially in publishing Noli
Me Tangere.
To meet the cost and his available finances, he made revisions and remove the chapter that is
dedicated to Elias to make the novel compacted.
He (Rizal) was so confused as to whom between Ibarra and Elias will be given a great deal of
importance to the novel.
He was somehow got depressed and does not feel any urge to push through the revolution
due to his physical and financial condition that time
He admits that he was sorry for choosing Ibarra over Elias, where in fact, Elias has the
qualities/ personality that is suitable to lead a revolution.
Rizal successfully printed his Novel thanks to Dr. Maximo Viola who loaned the needed
amount.
At last he received Paciano’s (his brother) remittance and were able to pay his debt to Dr. Viola
and left with enough funds for his planned visit in Europe.
He and Dr. Viola as his company, visit different countries and famous cities across Europe.
In Leitmeritz they met an old Austrian Professor whom Rizal was been mailing letters for quite
some time.
The last stop of his tour was Rome, he was amazed and stayed there for a week before he
returns to the Philippines. (His tour in Rome was wonderful; he quotes to one of his letters to
Dr. Blumentritt that “I am tired as a dog, but I will sleep like a god.”)
Rizal with all determination, returned to Philippines in his hometown in Calamba Laguna
despite all the warning of his elder brother and his brother in laws due to his noble reason.
In Calamba, he put up a medical clinic whereas his first patient was his mother, serve his fellow
townsfolk and look for Leonor Rivera which eventually he failed.
Few weeks after his arrival, his novel made an impact to many Filipinos that it caught the
attention of the governor general and the church.
The novel was been censored by the church and declaring it as heretic and subversive against
the catholic church and the Spanish government.
Due to the facts reflected in the novel, the Governor General ordered an investigation against
the friars’ estates of which they (the friars) were not happy about it.
Rizal left Calamba because he was been targeted by the friars; he left so that his friends and
loved ones will not be jeopardized by his acts and to continue the fight effectively from afar.
Chapter 12 - Hongkong, Macau and Japan 1888
Rizal was forced to leave the Philippines for the second time, aboard in steamer ship Zapiro
going to Hongkong.
During the trip, he got sick and was unable to get off to the first stop in Amoy.
He reached Hongkong, a British colony; there he met various fellow Filipinos one is Jose Maria
Basa who will accompany Rizal in his travel to Macau.
During his brief stay in Hongkong, he was observant and learned some Chinese culture and
language.
On February 22, 1888 he left Hongkong and head to Japan aboard steamer ship Oceanic.
Rizal arrived in San Francisco America on April 28, 1888, it is rumored that there is a cholera
outbreak, and they are required to quarantine for a week.
Being aligned in medical field, he knew that there is no cholera outbreak, the rumor is driven by
racial prejudice and discrimination against Negros and Asians particularly the Chinese coolies
aboard by the ship.
May 4, 1888 he was able to get off the ship and then he starts to travel.
He traveled across the America and observe everything particularly how the people live in
America.
He observed that America is a rich country and full of opportunities; racial discrimination that
was prevalent at that time made a negative impression to him.
