BODY POSITIONS BODY CAVITIES AND REGIONS

➢ Anatomical position
o standing erect with the face directed
forward, the upper limbs hanging to
the sides, and the palms of the
hands facing forward
➢ Supine
o lying face upward
➢ Prone
o lying face downward

DIRECTIONAL TERMS

➢ Up- Superior/ Cephalic


➢ Down- Inferior/ Caudal
➢ Front- Anterior/ Ventral
➢ Back- Posterior/ Dorsal
➢ Cephalic- toward the head
➢ Caudal- toward the tail
➢ Ventral- belly
➢ Dorsal- Back
➢ Proximal- Nearest
➢ Distal- Distant
➢ Medial- Toward the midline
➢ Lateral- Away from the midline
➢ Superficial- Close to the surface
➢ Deep- Toward the inferior

● Longitudinal section- through the
length of the organ
● Transverse (Cross) section- Right
angle to the length of the organ
● Oblique section- Across the length of
the organ at other than a right angle

• Median plane ● DORSAL
Midline; equal right and left halves
○ Cranial cavity- within the skull
● Transverse (Horizontal) plane

● Frontal (Coronal) plane ○ Spinal cavity- within the vertebral column
Vertically; Anterior and Posterior ■ organ: spinal cord

○ Thoracic cavity- within the rib cage
■ Pleural cavities- left ⅓ and right ⅓
of the thoracic cavity
● organ: lung
■ Mediastinum- middle ⅓ of the
thorax
● organs: heart, trachea,
esophagus
○ Abdominopelvic cavity- from the
diaphragm to the bottom of the trunk
■ Abdominal cavity- from the
diaphragm to the rim of the pelvic
bones
● organs: stomach, liver,
most of the intestines,
pancreas, spleen, kidneys
■ Pelvic cavity- from the pelvic rim to
the floor of the trunk
● organs: portions of the
intestines,ovaries,uterus,
urinary bladder
