Dear Parents/Guardians,

A belated Happy New Year and Welcome Back!

1) I hope that 2023 is a fresh start for you and your child and brings with it new success and insight.
In 2023, Guangyang Secondary School celebrates our 105 Anniversary. Tracing our roots back to
th

Kong Yiong High School, which was situated in the Kovan area for the better part of the 20 Century,
th

we will be adopting the school theme of GY105: Guangyang Gives Back- We Can, We Will.

GY105: Guangyang Gives Back- We Can, We Will

2) Our theme emphasizes the crucial role that the school and its surrounding community play in
each other’s flourishing. Kong Yiong was originally founded to provide quality education to children
in the Kovan area in order to uplift the families living there. Subsequently, as the school grew and
developed, the community also provided rich support for the school in terms of resources and
learning opportunities that our students can glean from. In the Chinese tradition of “Remembering
the Source as One Drinks the Water”, we will be organizing a series of activities where student use
their unique abilities to give back to the community around them. Also, we will also be looking at
engaging our Guangyang Alumni (you may be one of them yourself) in a Homecoming event later
this year.

School Reporting Time and Timetable Structure

3) Our school days in 2023 will continue to commence at 7.30am and students should gather for
assembly in the school hall by 7.20am. There will be consequences for latecoming as we believe
punctuality is a virtue that every student should cultivate. Please support your child in this regard by
ensuring s/he get ar least 7 hours of rest each night. For Semester 1 this year, please note that the
school will be running on an even-odd week timetable and class schedules will be different on even
and odd weeks due to the school’s Blended Learning programme, which commences on 3rd
February. More details on BL will be released very soon.

School Discipline

4) As we start a new school year, we also ask that you help ensure that your child is well-groomed
and his/her uniform and hair are up to the stipulated standards set out in the Student Handbook,
which all students have received. All school rules, expectations and standards are set out in the
Handbook and you can refer to it if you have any queries about school norms. I would also to
especially like to draw your attention to the issue of vaping among our youth. There has been a rise
in the number of vaping cases found among young people in Singapore and vaping remains banned
locally. The school takes a very strong stance against the practice and will deal with vaping the
same way we deal with smoking. Please help us to monitor your child so that they do not pick up this
undesirable and unhealthy habit.

Strong in Principles, Steadfast in Duty

School Improvement Projects

5) The school has embarked on some improvement projects for the benefit of students and staff.
First, the school canteen has been refreshed with new furniture, fittings and layout. We hope this
refresh will inject a fresh sense of vitality to the canteen, which is a key hub of student activity. We
will be polling students to get more input on what they would like to see in their new canteen. Along
with that, the school has also resurfaced the parade square and basketball court with vibrant colours.
Following the merger with Guangyang Primary School, we will be occupying their Indoor Sports Hall
complex and after some renovation, will be opening up a new sports hall and 2 indoor basketball
courts for student usage. We hope that these new facilities will give our students chances at new
learning opportunities, particularly in their CCAs.

My team and I will be engaging you online soon during our regular cohort engagement sessions in
Term 1. We remain contactable at [email protected] for any queries and clarifications as usual.

Warmest Regards

Mr Alvin Lim, Principal
