Lesson -1 Cell structure and functions Grade :8 2020-21

1. Who discovered Cell?

Cells were discovered by Robert Hooke.

2. Name an instrument used for observation and study of living cells.

Microscope.

3. Define cell
A cell is the structural and functional unit of life.

4. What are the building blocks of life? Why are they called so?
Cells are the basic building blocks of life. They make up all living things capable of
performing basic functions of life ,that is why they are called basic building blocks of life.

5. Give an example of single cell in human blood which can change its shape.
White blood cell

6. Cell is called the basic structural and functional unit of living organisms. Explain.
Cells constitute various components of plants and animals. They are the building blocks of
life. The basic functions like respiration, assimilation and all major metabolic activities are
carried inside the cell. This is the reason why cells are referred to as the ‘basic structural
and functional unit of life’.

7. Write the functions of cell membrane

Cell membrane provide support to the cell.
It is helpful in exchange of materials
It gives shapes to the cell.
It protects the inner parts of the cell.
It separates cell from each other.

8. Write the functions of cell wall.

It provides mechanical support to cell.
It allows all substances to pass through it.
It maintains the shape of the cell.

9. Differentiate between unicellular and multicellular organisms.

Organisms made up of single cell are called unicellular organisms. Organisms made up of
more than one cell are called multicellular organisms.

10. Explain how Pseudopodia are helpful for Amoeba.

Pseudopodia help Amoeba in movement and in capturing the food.

11. Complete the levels of organisation in an organism.

Cell -------- Tissue ------------ Organ ------------- Organ system ----------- Organism
12. Define the function of Nuclear membrane.
a. Separates nucleus from cytoplasm.
b. Allows the movement of materials between the cytoplasm and the inside of the
nucleus.

13. Define Gene and its function.

a. Gene is a unit of inheritance in living organisms.
b. Function: Controls the transfer of character from parents to offspri
14. Single cell organisms perform all the functions that multicellular organisms perform."
Define what functions are these. Also define who perform all these function in multicellular
organisms.

a. Single- celled organism performs all functions that multicellular organisms perform.
These functions are capturing foodand digestion of food, respiration, excretion,
growth and reproduction.

b. In single-celled organism these functions are performed by a single cell. However,

in multicellular organism each function is performed by specific organ made of
many tissues.

15. Which part of the cell contains organelles?

a. Cytoplasm is the part of the cell that contains various organelles such as
b. mitochondria, ribosomes, Golgi bodies, etc. Cytoplasm is a jelly like fluid that fills
the cell andoccurs between the plasma membrane and the nucleus.

16. State the difference between eukaryotes and prokaryotes

1.Prokaryotes : The cells which do not have a well organised nucleus and do not have a
nuclear membrane are termed prokaryotic cells and the organisms are termed prokaryotes.

1) Bacteria and blue-green algae are prokaryotic cells

Eukaryotes
The cells which have a well organised nucleus and have a distinct nuclear membrane are termed
eukaryotic cells and the organisms are termed Eukaryotes. All organisms except Bacteria and blue
green algae are eukaryotes.

17. Where are chromosomes found in a cell? State their function.

The nucleus contains thread-like structures called chromosomes. Chromosomes play
an important role in the inheritance of characters. They carry genes that help in the
transfer of characters from the parents to the offspring.

18. What are cell organelles?

The cytoplasm has very minute structures called cell organelles which perform all the
functions of a cell.Mitochondria,Endoplasmicreticulum,Ribosomes,plastidsetc. Are cell
organelles.

19. What are plastids?

20. Plastids are the cell organelles which give colour to the different parts of a plant and are
found only in plant cell.

21. Write the differences between plant cell and animal cell.
