RMC – READY MIX CONCRETE

As the name indicates, Ready Mixed Concrete (RMC) is the concrete which is
delivered in the ready- to-use manner.

RMC is defined by the American Concrete Institute’s Committee 116R-90 as:

"Concrete that is manufactured for delivery to a purchaser in a plastic and

unhardened state".

The Indian Standard Specification IS 4926:2003 defines RMC as:

"Concrete mixed in a stationary mixer in a central batching and mixing plant

or in a truck-mixer and supplied in fresh condition to the purchaser either at
the site or into the purchaser's vehicles“.
BACKGROUND…..

RMC industry is 18 – 20 Years old in India, while it was introduced in

other countries much earlier.

 Patented in Germany.
 1913 – First Delivery of RMC (Baltimore)/
 1926 – Birth of Transit Mixer
 1931 – Erection of first commercial plant in London.
 1950-1974 – Remarkable growth of RMC – 31 Million CM of concrete per
Year.
RMC IN INDIA…..

In India RMC was first initially was used in 1950 during the
construction sites of Dams like Bhakra Nangal.

At the construction the transportation of concrete is done by

either manually or Mechanically using ropeways & buckets or
conveyor systems.
Ready Mix concrete is a specialized material in which cement aggregates
and other ingredients are weigh-batched at a plant in a central mixer, before
delivery to the construction site in condition ready for placing by the builder.

Thus, Fresh concrete is

manufactured in a plant
away from the
construction site and
transported within the
requisite journey time.

The RMC supplier

provides two services:

Processing the materials

for making fresh concrete.

Transporting the product

within a short time.
ADVANTAGES……
 A centralized concrete batching plant can serve a wide area.
 The plants are located in areas zoned for industrial use, and yet the
delivery trucks can service residential districts or inner cities.

 Better quality concrete is produced.

 Elimination of storage space for basic materials at site of construction.
 Elimination of hiring of plant and machinery.
 Wastages of basic materials is avoided.
 Labours associated with production of concrete is eliminated.
 Time required is greatly reduced.
 Noise and dust pollution at site is reduced, Eco friendly product.
 Cleaner working Environment.
WHY RMC PREFERRED……

 Increasing stakes in the reliability and durability of construction of

emerging users.

 Increasing awareness on Environment factors and convenience.

 Globalization – adoption of best practices across the globe.
The precision of mixture and reduced work site confusion.
 Facilitates speedy construction through programmed delivery at site.
 Mechanized operation with consequent economy.
 Decrease labour, site supervising cost and project time, resulting in
savings.

 Proper control and economy in use of raw material results in saving of

natural resources.

 Assures consistent quality through accurate computerized control.

DISADVANTAGES……

 The Material are batched at a central, and the mixing begins at that
plant, so the travelling time from the plant, so the travelling time from the
plant is critical over longer distances.

 Access Roads, and site access have to be able to carry the weight of the
truck and load concrete is approx. 2.5 tonne per comm.

 Concrete’s limited time span between mixing and going – off means that
ready-mix should be placed with in 2 hours of batching at the plant.
RMC PLANT……
A typical RMC plant consists of:

 Silos for the storage of cement.

 Bins for the storage of
aggregates.

 Weigh batchers for

proportioning different
ingredients of concrete.

 High efficiency mixer for

thorough mixing of ingredients.

 Computerized system
controlling the entire production
process.

 The quality of the resulting

concrete is much superior to
site-mixed concrete.
MIXING……
 Thorough mixing of the materials is essential for the production of
uniform concrete.

 The mixing should ensure that the mass becomes homogenous, uniform
in colour and consistency .

 There are methods adopted for mixing Ready Mix Concrete.

Transit Mixed (or truck –mixed) Concrete

Central Mixed Concrete

TRANSIT MIXING……
Also called truck mixed or dry batched, all of the raw ingredients are
charged directly in the truck mixer.

 At job site: while travelling to the job site the drum is turned at agitating
speed and concrete is completely mixed after arriving at the job site.

 At Yard :The drum is turned at high speed or 12-15 rpm for 50

revolutions which allows quick check of the batch.

 In Transit: the drum is turned at medium speed or about 8 rpm for 70

revolutions while driving to the job site. The drum is then slowed to
agitating speed.

It is delivered to site.

 Often in transit mixers capable of mixing the ingredients of the concrete
just before the delivery of batch.

 Results in precious mixing, allowing specially concrete mixtures to be

developed and implemented on construction sites.
CENTRALLY MIXING……
 Mixing is done at the batching plant and deliver the mix concrete to the
site in an agitator truck, which keeps the mix.

 The drum carrying the concrete revolves slowly so as to prevent the

mixed concrete from segregation and prevent its stiffening due to initial set.

 RMC is facilitated through a truck mounted boom placer that can pump
the product for ready use at multi storied construction sites.

 A boom placer can pump the concrete upto 80 meters.
