Range of ASTM A516 Grade 70 Plate with Data Sheet.
ASME SA516 Grade 70 Plate is one of the most popular steel grades. It is primarily intended for use
in welded pressure vessels where notch toughness is important. These grades cover a range of
tensile strengths from 55 - 90 MPa and this versatility explains much of the specifications popularity.
Pressure Vessel Plates, Carbon Steel, for Moderate and Lower-Temperature Service to ASTM A 516/
A 516M Standard
For plates thinner than 40mm normally supply as rolled. Plates above 40mm thick are normalised.
For SA516 Grade 70, which is one of most popular steels, the ASME standard composition is as
follows (dependent on grade)
ASME S516 specification steel is used throughout the oil and gas, chemical and power generation
industry and can be tested to exceed your specified requirements. HIC Testing is one such
requirement as this material is used commonly in sour service/ wet h2s corrosive environments and
so knowing how susceptible the material will be to hydrogen sulphide corrosion is imperative
The A516 / SA516 standard, its full name is "Standard Specification for Pressure Vessel Plates,
Carbon Steel, for Moderate- and Lower-Temperature Service”, is widely used by designers and
engineers in many market sectors particularly outside of Europe. You may also see the following
variations:
ASTM A516 Grade 70N or ASME SA516 Grade 70N (the "N” is added to show that the steel is
normalised)
ASTM A516M or ASME SA516M (the "M” indicates that the material is certified in metric
units)
ASME SA516 Grade 70 Standard steel plates are intended for use in pressure vessels where
increased strength is is important.
ASTM A516 Grade 70 steel is one of the most popular steels for boilers, pressure vessels and heat
exchangers. It is excellent at low temperature and have good results on standard Charpy V Notch
toughness tests. A516 70 is according to the ASTM standard A516/A516M

Our experience is that ASTM A516 Gr 70 plates from German steel mills are more reliable and there
are fewer defects – especially when the plates get thicker. For some companies purchasing German
steel is like an insurance policy, but it helps prevent things going wrong to start with.
Along with the improved reliability there are also a range of other small benefits over steels from
other origins. These include better physical and chemical characteristics – so that when the plates
are retested the risk of them failing a test is far lower. Plates also often come with improved
toughness and weldability etc.
The most important thing to know as a potential customer of Prosaic Steel is that we stock, process,
and distribute all of the popular grades of Boiler and Pressure Vessel specifications like ASTM A516,
ASME SA516, eN 10028-3, and BS 1501. You may call the steel whatever you want and leave us to
worry about matching our stocks to your requirements.
Steel in contact with water containing H2S will corrode producing hydrogen at its surface. H2S not
only inhibits the formation of hydrogen gas, so reducing the opportunity for it to escape, but
promotes its absorption in to the steel. At typical working temperatures below 200 degrees Celsius
hydrogen atoms can become trapped causing embrittlement and ultimately cracking.
The use of steel pressure vessels in industries such as oil and gas processing requires a robust steel
which is resilient to the long term corrosive effects of hydrogen sulphide in sour service applications.
In order to provide better H2S resistance the properties of C-Mn steels have been progressively
developed to improve chemistry, cleanliness, homogeneity, and microstructure
