Ventilation Selection
Why you need Ventilation?
New building materials and construction methods are effectively resulting in waterproof buildings. They trap moisture inside just as effectively as they keep moisture out. Open doors and windows provide air circulation and ventilation but security considerations mean that we are increasingly less likely to use this option. Houses tend to remain closed up more and more. Poor ventilation results in a consistent buildup of moisture generated by cooking/bathing-showering/clothes washing-drying/LPG gas heating/etc.
Moisture Generators:
Bathroom
Showering
Condensation
Gas Heating
Laundry
Toilet
Kitchen
In dwellings with a metal roof, or where the roof is lined with sarking, ventilating directly into the roof space is not permitted under the Building Code.

Ventilation Selection
Your Ventilation Solutions
It is best to remove moisture from where it is generated to outside the house before it has a chance to spread to other parts of the house. Use ducted fans, through-wall fans or window fans at all times. Do NOT use ceiling fans which discharge into the ceiling cavity - this only moves the problem. Moisture will permeate insulation and ceiling linings causing further problems. In particular with bathrooms think in terms of roomconditioning. Warm, moist air is immediately attracted to cold surfaces, where it condenses into water droplets. Cold surfaces include glass, mirrors, tiles, wet-wall linings, cold un-insulated ceiling linings, etc. You cannot remove all of this air at a rate fast enough to stop this happening and if you could, you would be standing in a wind tunnel. Use of a bathroom heater to warm the room prior to use greatly assists in reducing condensation.

Fan Placement
Careful location of an extraction fan will ensure maximum air-flow through the room. Air extracted from a bathroom, for example, can be replaced with dry air drawn from an adjacent bedroom or hallway, in turn, drawn from an open window or door. This ensures that fresh air is being drawn into the entire house at regularperiods. Switching the fan on before starting showering or cooking sets up effective air-flows before the associated condensation problems occur. Closing doors to adjacent living areas assists in stopping the transfer of moisture to those areas but ensure that sufficient air can enter under the door to replace extracted air. Use a door vent if necessary. For a fan to remove air effectively, the same amount of air being extracted must be able to enter the room. e.g. air in = air out. MEDIUM CIRCULATION
POOR CIRCULATION
An air-tight room will mean no air movement. If the room is tightly sealed (e.g. a tight-fitting door, with no gap at the bottom), you may need to fit a through-door grille (see duct accessories) to allow replacement air into the room.

Fan Regulations
What the law states
Australian Building Code Paragraph 3.8.5.0 states: Performance requirement P2.4.5 is satisfied for mechanical ventilation system if it is installed in accordance with AS 1668.2. Mechanical ventilation for acceptable indoor air quality, except that any contaminated air from a sanitary compartment or bathroom must: (a) Exhaust directly to outside the building by way of ducts; or (b) Exhaust into the roof space provided: i. It is adequately ventilated by open eaves, and/or roof vents; or ii. The roof is clad in roofing tiles without sarking or similar materials, which would prevent venting through gaps between tiles. As detailed above, in dwellings with a metal roof, or where the roof is lined with sarking, ventilating directly in to the roof space is not permitted by building codes unless the roof space is adequately ventilated by open eaves or roof vents. The Manrose range offers many ducted solutions to exhaust to the outside through wall, roof or eaves to comply with the latest building code. Natural Ventilation for the above is acceptable as long as opening windows in each room have an area of 5% or more of the floor area of the room.
Bathroom
AS1668 (summarised): ...Buildings shall have a means of collecting or otherwise removing: cooking fumes and odours; steam from laundering, utensil washing, bathing and showering; odours from sanitary and waste storage spaces; poisonous or flammable fumes and gases...
Bathrooms The regulations require a fan capable of a minimum extraction capacity of 25 litres per second when installed Toilets The regulations require a fan capable of a minimum extraction capacity of 25 litres per second when installed Kitchens The regulations require a fan capable of a minimum extraction capacity of 50 litres per second when installed Laundries The regulations require a fan capable of a minimum extraction capacity of 20 litres per second when installed

Calculating Fan Performance
1. Litres/Second (l/s)
milk 1 litre
1m
4.
1m
2.
1m
1. Calculate the room volume in metres (L x W x H) 2. Multiply the room volume by the recommended air changes per hour for that room. Always use the higher limit. 3. The result is the total performance required in cubic metres per hour.
Select a fan with a higher performance than this figure. For Example:
To convert from one to other types of measurement: If you know Litres/Second (l/s): l/s x 3.6 = m/hr. (e.g. 25 l/s x 3.6 = 90m/hr) If you know Cubic Metres/Hour (m/hr): m/hr 3.6 = l/s (e.g. 200m/hr 3.6 = 55.55 l/s) 3. ACH (Air changes per hour).
What is the best fan for a bathroom that is 2.8m long by 2.8m wide with a ceiling height of 2.4m?
1. Calculate the volume of the bathroom: 2.8 x 2.8 x 2.4 = 18.8m3 2 11-15 air changes per hour are recommended for a bathroom. Multiply the room volume by 15: 18.8m3 x 15 = 282m/hr 3. The fan to choose for this bathroom would be a fan that performs at greater than 282m/hr. A fan that has a performance level of 313m/hr or higher (eg. XP150, or SF150) would do this job
The number of times the total room volume of air is changed each hour. Refer to the table below for the recommended Air Changes per hour based on the room type.

Ventilation Selection
What Affects Performance?
Simple facts: 1. Fan size (i.e diameter of impeller & outlet) 2. Duct and the way it is installed Smaller duct = greater resistance to airflow. More bends = greater resistance to airflow. Longer duct runs = increasingly reduced airflow. Wrinkled ducting causes turbulence and reduces airflow Compare Centrifugal Against Axial Fan Performance: 1. SF100 (axial) vs an SF200 (centrifugal) fan The starting point is the free air performance of 23l/s for the axial and 31l/s for the centrifugal. As duct is added to each of these fans, this increases the pressure (Pa) and decreases volume of air moved. From the below example you can see that at 20Pa of pressure the 100mm axial fan airflow has stopped whereas the 100mm centrifugal fan is still moving 29l/s!
Smoother, extended ducting allows smooth, increased airflow Manrose ALUDUCT flexible ducting retains its stretched-out shape (for smooth airflow) far better than most competitive products. Many competitive ducts tend to shrink back on themselves, wrinkling the duct fabric. 3. Fan type Centrifugal Flow: Pressure developing fans which achieve good flow against the resistance created in a ducted system. Particularly useful in venting areas like internal bathrooms/laundries, multi-room extraction systems, heat-transfer systems, etc. Mix Flow: Powerful in-duct mounted fans, designed for applications that require high air flows, with low relative noise. Axial Flow: Suitable for wall, window and roof applications where they can extract directly to the outside. Short duct runs are an option but the length of duct should be limited. e.g. 100mm dia : 2-3m length 125mm dia : 3-4m length 150mm dia : 4-5m length

SF100 & SF200 PERFORMANCE GRAPH 2. ID150 (axial) vs a MAN150 (centrifugal) fan The starting point is the free air performance of 89l/s for the axial and 115l/s for the centrifugal. As duct is added to each of these fans, this increases the pressure (Pa) and decreases the volume of air moved. From the below example you can see that at 120Pa of pressure the 150mm axial fan airflow has stopped whereas the 150mm centrifugal fan is still moving 102l/s! ID150 & MAN150 PERFORMANCE GRAPH

Ventilation Selection
Fan Applications
Locate your Ventilation Fan Location of your ventilation fan will depend on the physical constraints of your room. The visual recognition guide (shown on the right) will help you decide the most suitable physical installation to meet your requirements. Within the above mounting options there are various other features available, such as : TIMER (maintain fan run-on after the room is
vacated)
Low Voltage
Shower
- Wall/Ceiling Mounted Fans - Thru Wall Fan Kits - In-Line Fan Kits
inside the fan - closed when the fan is not running to stop draughts).
Wet Areas & Recommended Fan Types When considering where in the room to place an extractor fan, you must consider the wet areas. Zone 1: This is the zone directly within the shower or bath up to 2.25 metres above the floor and 150mm around the bath/shower cubicle. A SELV fan or an ln-line fan kit will be required in this zone. For example if a fan is mounted directly over the bath or shower it must be a low voltage fan (SELV). Zone 2: This zone is 0.6 metres horizontally outside of zone 1 and 2.25 metres above the floor. Zone 3: The outer layer is zone 3, which is 2.4 metres horizontally outside of zone 2 and 2.25 metres above the floor.
Zone 1: Requires a Low Voltage Fan or an In-Line fan kit Zone 2: Any fan model can be used Zone 3: Any fan model can be used
How To Order
Select the model that exhausts the closest to your requirements. If the performance required falls between two fans, it is recommended you select the one handling the most air.

UNILOK FR1 Acoustic Ducting is a flexible duct manufactured tough & whisper quiet for consumer & installer peace of mind. Unlike other types of flexible duct, UNILOK FR1 has an outer steel rib that ensures the products integrity, and correct diameter, even in the tightest bends. Due to its steel rib, it is not prone to glue failure or fatigue (sagging or ovalisation) from vibration with age like plastic ribbed or non ribbed glued duct.
NOTE:
All 1 metre lengths are packed in bags with header cards, 3 metre nude duct is supplied boxed up to 250mm and all other items are supplied in colour coded bags. No glued/adhesive duct should be installed in a compressed or ovalised state for fear of long term failure.

Heat Transfer
Why Choose Heat Trans:
Ultimate Control
For the ultimate in control, Heat Trans systems include high quality Ultecon digital controllers which automatically control when the system operates to maintain your preset comfort level in your lounge. They provide accurate readings for temperature settings and speed control selection (where applicable).
Whisper Quiet
Heat Trans systems use unique acoustic insulated ducting to provide a whisper quiet system within your home. This specially designed ducting is only available in Heat Trans systems and retains heat when distributing warm air around your home.
Energy Efficient
You can run a Heat Trans system for less than the cost of a light bulb! The one room system uses an amazingly low 46W, which is about half the consumption of an averaged sized light bulb. The two-room system uses up to 80W and the three-room system uses up to 110W. These high quality fans have been specifically selected to ensure correct airflow and pressure levels are achieved.
Easily Adjustable
The outlets within your home are easily adjustable to allow balancing of the airflow into each room. Simply twist the centre section of the diffuser to allow more or less air into each room. Or if your diffuser is located in a guest bedroom you can simply close that diffuser completely when the room is not in use.

Heat Transfer
How Heat Trans Works:
HEAT TRANS utilises excess heat by transferring it from one room to multiple rooms within the home
STEP 1 Excess heat from your heat source will rise to ceiling level where it is trapped by ceiling insulation. This excess heat can reach temperatures of 30-35C.
STEP 2 This excess heat can be effectively transferred to other rooms using a high quality fan and acoustic insulated ducting.
STEP 3 Natural re-circulation occurs, resulting in a continual movement of warm air through the home, helping to reduce mould and mildew.
Ultimate Control
The Ultecon high quality digital thermostat controllers accurately measure and display the temperature of your lounge as well as allowing you to preset your preferred room temperature. When your lounge temperature exceeds your preferred room temperature the system will automatically start to transfer the excess heat to other rooms in your home. Once set you can sit back and relax and let the controller do all the work. The 2 and 3 room kits also offer fan speed control, which allows you to set your preferred fan speed giving you ultimate control over the volume of heated air being transferred.
ONE ROOM
Ducting Considerations
All Heat Trans kits can be extended. 1 room kits can be extended to a maximum length of 12 metres (6 metres supplied in kit). 2 room kits can be extended to a maximum length of 21 metres (12 metres supplied in kit). 3 room kits can be extended to a maximum length of 24 metres (15 metres supplied in kit). Acoustic Insulated Ducting is available in 3 and 6 metres lengths and will require a duct joiner: 150mm x 3 metre acoustic insulated duct - Order Code: DCT0633 150mm x 6 metre acoustic insulated duct - Order Code: DCT0634 200mm x 3 metre acoustic insulated duct - Order Code: DCT0635 200mm x 6 metre acoustic insulated duct - Order Code: DCT0636 150mm Duct Joiner - Order Code: DCT0723 200mm Duct Joiner - Order Code: DCT0724

Introduce fresher cooler air into your home in summer with the Summer-Vent Extension Kit, to enable year round use of your system. With the inlet grille installed under your soffit, fresher cooler air is filtered using a high efficiency F7 filter and is distributed throughout your home via your Heat Trans outlets. The system is controlled via a standard wall switch which operates the motorized damper to start drawing air from outside.
Note: When the summer feature is working the lounge/warmed room inlet is switched off via the damper and will not receive the cooled air directly from outside, however due to air pressure a natural re-circulation occurs throughout the home. For additional ducting please see page 31

Ducting Installation Guidelines
The layout of flexible duct, the number of bends, the sharpness of the bend and the amount of sag allowed between support joints will have serious effects on system performance due to the increased resistance to airflow each introduces. Use the minimum length of flexible duct to make connections. It is not recommended that excess length of ducts be installed to allow for possible future relocations of air terminal devices. Avoid installation where exposure to direct sunlight can occur eg: skylight. Grilles and diffusers need to be supported independently of the flexible duct. Repair torn or damaged vapour barrier/jacket with duct tape listed and labelled to Standard AS4254. If internal core is penetrated, replace flexible duct or treat as a join.
RIGHT
WRONG
Avoid bending ducts across sharp corners or incidental contact with metal fixtures, pipes or conduits. Flexible ducts shall be installed with a bend radius to duct diameter ratio in accordance with the following:
Do not install near hot equipment (eg heaters boilers, steam pipes etc.) that is above the recommended flexible duct use temperature.

Ducting Installation Guidelines
Installation Instructions for Air Ducts and Air Connectors:
Non Metallic with Plain Ends Connections 1. After desired length is determined, cut completely around and through duct with knife or scissors. Cut wire with wire cutters. Fold back duct jacket and insulation. Joins 1. Fold back duct jacket and insulation from core. Butt two cores together on a 4 (100mm) length metal sleeve or polymer sleeve.
2. Slide at least 1 (25mm) of core over the fitting up to the bead. Seal the core to collar with at least 2 wraps of duct tape. Secure connection with clamp placed over the core and duct tape.
2. Tape cores together with at least 2 wraps of duct tape. Connection can be secured with 2 clamps placed over the taped core ends.
3. Pull jacket and insulation back over core. Tape jacket with at least 2 wraps of duct tape ensuring end of the outer jacket is secured to the spigot. A clamp may be used in place of or in combination with the duct tape.
3. Pull jacket and insulation back over cores. Tape jackets together with at least 2 wraps of duct tape.

Supporting Flexible Duct
Flexible duct shall be supported at intervals, no greater distance than 1.5m. Maximum permissable sag is 40mm per metre of spacing between supports. A connection to rigid duct or equipment shall be considered a support joint. Long horizontal duct runs with sharp bends shall have additional supports before and after the bend approximately one duct diameter from the centre line of the bend.
Recommend Hanging Straps DCT0808
SAG 60mm
Hanger or saddle material in contact with the flexible duct shall be of sufficient width to prevent any restriction of the internal diameter of the duct when the weight of the supported section rests on the hanger or saddle material. In no case will the material contacting the flexible duct be less than 40mm wide.
40mm Min.
40mm Min.
Factory installed suspension systems integral to the flexible duct is an acceptable hanging method

Flexible ducts may rest on ceiling joists or truss supports. Maximum spacing between supports shall not exceed 1.5m.
CEILING JOIST
Support the duct between a metal connection and bend by allowing the duct to extend straight for 100mm before making the bend. This will avoid possible damage of the flexible duct by the edge of the metal collar.
NOTE: factory-made air ducts may not be used for vertical risers in air duct systems serving more than two stories
NOTE: Upon completion of installation, please test in accordance with 2.8.2 of standard AS4254.
