COURSE DESCRIPTION
Introduction:
This course will explore the principles and applications of DNA science with special reference to
recombinant DNA technology In recent years, scientists have also attempted to employ the methods of
genetic engineering to correct certain inherited conditions, and have been making great strides in their
ability to manipulate genetic materials. In this course, an attempt will be made to provide the basic back
ground in the principles of and Application of Biotechnology in Medicine, pharmaceutical industries,
Agriculture, Marine and Environmental Sciences. Isolation, selection and improvement of industrially
useful microorganisms and Modern tools of Biotechnology technique followed by detailed recipe and
method of microbial cloning and DNA Libraries.

Purpose:
The course will help the students to understand the basic concepts of biotechnology and the
methods used in the manipulation of nucleic acids (DNA and RNA)

The course is intended to:

1. Understand the role of biotechnology in society including the risks and benefits
2. Gain a deeper understanding of the significance of biotechnology in pharmaceutical
development, agriculture, forensics, genetic testing, industrial products, and scientific
research.
3. Model the steps involved in the production of a recombinant DNA biotechnology product
4. Broaden the students’ knowledge on the importance and various functions of DNA
5. Give a detailed explanation on mechanisms involved in genetic engineering and the
microorganisms involve and to enable students to understand fully the essentiality of
recombinant technology and cloning.

In class test, term paper, oral test, quiz and assignment

as scheduled by the university.

Week 4: I. The characteristics of large scale fermentation. ii. Operation of microbial processes in industrial scale.
iii. Scale-up microbial process iv. Downstream processing.
Week 5: Recombinant DNA Technology
Week 6: i. Restriction enzymes ii. Cloning vectors iii. Bloting
Week 7: Continuous assessment
Week 8: Polymerase Chain Reaction and Its Applications.
Week 9: Electrophoresis and its Applications.
Week 10: Genomic Libraries Advantages and Disadvantages
Week 11: cDNA Libraries Advantages and Disadvantages
