Title: Buhay na pagpanaw
Essay:
Title: Death Sona
Every single day, someone is facing my creator instead of me. It’s an endless quotidian
cycle. An absolute law and facticity that entails suffering. Perhaps, an enigmatic gift of
mortality. Once death took a soul. It also steals everything that belongs to such a soul,
including the present and the future. Once death took someone’s soul, then everything
that matters to such soul is in the past. Hence, death is never a single phenomenon. It
takes a human soul to leave the bereaved playing lacrimosa – a music of tears, agony,
denial, and hatred. But it also misses another soul. The soul not taken can continue to
live above the earth and the small interval between the soul missed and soul taken
creates a lifelong change to people. Being in such facticity makes every human soul, in
flesh or not, virtuoso in fiddling. It brings all the souls together to play in a string
orchestra. Newly taken souls are lucky to play the violins and violas for they are playing
the melody, the easiest sound to recognize. While the souls taken by death a long time
ago, they are playing the cellos and basses, their music is also important but not
recognized by many, in worst cases, they are almost forgotten. Death, as conductor,
sets the orchestra in motion to play their original composition – the death sonata.
Suchlike masterpiece is a composition of three or four or even more than five
movements in contrasting forms and keys. It delivers the audience the symphony of
tears, agony, denial, and hatred. But what lasts forever is the most difficult to hear yet
the best part, love. It teaches the audience to focus on what really matters. To live and
give their best and fullest. They are the lucky souls, the souls not taken, the listeners of
death sonata.
Father, why did you forsake me? Because I chose to be like you?
I heard them, the things you can’t hear, the anguish and woe of your children. I
witnessed how your children maimed the innocence of each other. I suffered from the
pain of the treacherous oppression but I kept worshiping your name. I followed you,
despite the haunting ghost of my brother who had to die in my arms while I wait for your
miracle. I have loved you with all my heart even if your name reminds me how people
whisper your name before their death hoping for your intervention.
Tell me Father before I face your judgement, if my death is all your will, why did you
forsake me? Because I only heard their agonies and did nothing? Because I only
prayed?
“Now I am standing on the edge of now or never and the skies are looking clear” –
Sheppard
Some people waste their potential, while some people work for it because they were
born without natural talent. Some people train their skills with a lot of hard work – an
unquestionable key to success. Then there are some people like me. People who keep
their potential hidden, untouched, and not cultivated, because of the fear of non-
constructive judgment.
As I grew older, I used to believe that people were born for something – and certainly, I
am not born for writing. I failed to realize that such a philosophy will hamper me in
chasing small achievements.
What if I tried, at least tried, to do things that I love but am not destined for?
I’ve joined ADVO two years ago when I was a college freshman. I took the examination
for writers and luckily, I passed it. That was my very first experience in the field of
journalism because even before high school, my teachers, coaches, colleagues, and
even my mother herself, keeps on telling me that journalism (specifically writing) is
something that I will not excel in due to my very bad penmanship. They even describe
my penmanship as “kinahig ng manok”.
I quit.
I did not pursue my ADVO journey because people inside my small circle told me that I
am not born for it, and I should quit.
I learned that there is no such thing as destiny, and that someone’s worth and capacity
should not be measured by words. And I am already starting it, my metamorphosis.
C. Captioning

Clothed truth
by Arielle Dane Adan
I stripped
one piece of fabric at a time,
accoutrements against fiction’s fault
crashing to this hate-filled earth
Awaken their slumbering flames.
so they’d stop and glance,
as I draw myself of secrecies
entangled in the sheets of dishonesty.
From their crawling stares,
Cold, lingering kisses of the bitter air,
I stood bare with my pebbled flesh.
