PHYS 478/601 QUANTUM MECHANICS II

Assignment 5
Due: Monday March 13, 2017

Problem 1 Magnetic Resonance

A spin-1/2 particle with gyromagnetic ratio , at rest in a static field B0 k,

precesses with the Larmour frequency 0 = B0 . Now we turn on a small
transverse radio-frequency (rf) field, Brf [cos(t)i sin(t)j], so that the total
field is
B = Brf cos(t)i Brf sin(t)j + B0 k.

(a) Constructthe 2 2 Hamiltonian matrix for this system.

a(t)
(b) If (t) = is the spin at time t, show that
b(t)

i i
eit b + 0 a ; b = eit a 0 b

a =
2 2
where Brf is related to the strength of the rf field.
(c) Find the general solution for a(t) and b(t) in terms of their initial values
a0 and b0 . Anwer:

0 i 0
a(t) = a0 cos( t/2) + 0 [a0 (0 ) + b0 ] sin( t/2) ei/2

i
b(t) = b0 cos( 0 t/2) + 0 [b0 (0 ) + a0 ] sin( 0 t/2) ei/2 ,

where p
0 ( 0 )2 + 2 .
(d) If the particle starts out with spin up (i.e, a0 = 1, b0 = 0), find the
probability of a transition to spin down, as a function of time. Answer: P (t) =
{2 /[( 0 )2 + 2 ]} sin2 ( 0 t/2).
(e) Sketch the resonance curve:

2
P () = ,
( 0 )2 + 2
as a function of the driving frequency (for fixed 0 and ). Note that the
maximum occurs at = 0 . Fine the full width at half-maximum, .
(f) Since 0 = B0 , we can use the experimentally observed resonance to
determine the magnetic dipole moment of the particle. In a nuclear magnetic
resonance (NMR) experiment the g-factor of the proton is to be measured,
using a static field of 10,000 gauss and an rf field of amplitude 0.01 gauss.
What will the resonant frequency be? Find the width of the resonance curve.
(Give your answers in Hz.)

for a transition from n, l to n0 , l0 in hydrogen is

The atom starts out with a specific value of m, and then it goes to any of the
states m0 consistent with the selection rules m0 = m + 1, m, or m 1. Notice
that the answer is independent of m. Hint: First calculate the non-zero matrix
elements of x, y, and z between |nlmi and |n0 l0 m0 i for the case l0 = l + 1. From
these, determine the quantity

|hn0 , l + 1, m + 1|r|nlmi|2 + |hn0 , l + 1, m|r|nlmi|2 + |hn0 , l + 1, m 1|r|nlmi|2 .

Then do the same for l0 = l 1.
